Down the years with

1941 Company formed by SL Innocent - early work on Government contract balancing Rolls-Royce Merlin engines for the Supermarine Spitfire

1946 Started the manufacture of balancing machines

1963 Manufacture of machines for grinding natural diamond, and skive cutting equipment for the gem industry

1979 Manufacture of manual machines for PCD tooling

1996 The RG6 launched - the world’s first CNC grinder for PCD

1998 Launched the first peripheral grinder

1999 Spindle range includes servo spindles

2000 New range of dynamic balancing machines

2004 Laser profile cutting launched

2006 Designed and built the RG9 5-Axis CNC

2008 RG9 developed to extend to include Robot loading

2012 Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade

The Coborn RG9 CNC PCD Grinder was recently the subject of an order worth over £1.5million. The Zhengzhou Diamond/Yamada corporation in China ordered 11 Coborn RG9s - the largest single order in Coborn’s history. As the only company which has designed and built a PCD grinding machine from scratch, Coborn is naturally delighted to find the RG9, which now features robot loading, still in demand worldwide.

“We never take our reputation for granted,” said company Chairman John Innocent, “we have a constant programme of development and improvement, to keep our excellent name right at the top.”

The RG9 features 7-axis CNC grinding, plus 3 CNC camera axes, linear and rotary motion axes, touch-screen control, precision spindles, programmable wheel dressing and a host of optional extras such as rotary and linear axes, robot loading, peripheral grinding and a high quality filtration system. Coborn first launched the RG9 in 2006, and with the company’s constant programme of development and improvement, Coborn is delighted that the RG9 is still one of the most in-demand units in the industry.

The only way is

Coborn Engineering are rightly proud of our workforce. Our reputation is built on the quality of our machines, and they’re only as good as the work that goes into them - which in turn all comes down to the individual members of the Coborn team. We are rightly proud of all of the members of the Coborn ‘family’ - they put 110% effort into everything we do and it’s their dedication to quality that makes Coborn machines justifiably the best in the world.

Coborn was founded by Sam Innocent, whose understanding of perfect balance helped pioneer the Merlin engine to power the Spitfire to be one of the world’s ultimate flying machines.

Based on supremely balanced spindles at the heart of all their machines, Coborn went on to develop the first Scaive spindle for polishing natural diamond - today the vast majority of the world’s gems are polished on a Coborn machine. Over the ensuing years John Innocent, Sam’s son, took over as Managing Director and the company went on to develop a series of increasingly sophisticated PCD and PcBN grinding machines, culminating in the superb RG9, featuring 5-axis control and robot loading.

To promote growth and development, Steve Westlake was appointed Managing Director in 2007, to manage expansion of overseas markets and to streamline and modernise production methods. In the mid 2000s, the company took its first step into laser machining of insert blanks, a new and much advanced feature which

provides toolmakers with the best and most effective method of profiling the blanks and reducing tool grinding time. As well as their recent success in China Coborn is actively pursuing sales growth in India, Latin America, South Korea, Eastern Europe and Russia.

Coborn pride themselves on their rigorous attention to detail, not letting a single element of the production process go ahead without a highly developed testing and approval regime. With a specialist lab dedicated to achieving the vital precision that every Coborn machine must pass, the company makes sure that nothing leaves the gates without being approved for quality, build, function and standards.

Shanghai SurpriseIt is no surprise that China is a major destination for Coborn machines. The PCD and gem industry in the People’s Republic has seen enormous growth during the last 10 years, and the reputation of Coborn machines worldwide means that they are highly prized. Major recent orders include machines to Zhengzhou Diamond (China) - eight RG9s (four with Robots) for £1.5 million in December 2010. Five RG9s also went to Beijing Supower (China) in an £800k order in October 2011. Other recent orders include 360 Skive Motors to Kristal (Russia) in an order worth £800K in Sept 2011.
