INSIDE:
for the growing South Lake Union neighborhood. The project is complex and involves the design and
construction of a new substation, a transmission line to feed electricity to the substation and a network
distribution system.
This report summarizes the progress made on key project elements; what’s been accomplished during
the second quarter of 2014 and what’s ahead for the Denny Substation project. The activities covered
include progress made on the environmental review, a preliminary distribution network map, new art
installations, and Denny Substation social media highlights.
ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW & DESIGNDuring the second quarter of 2014, Seattle City Light issued the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), provided a 30-day comment period on the EIS and held a public hearing to gather feedback from the public and agencies on the document, including environmental impacts and any concerns about the project. Seattle City Light is currently focused on developing the Final EIS, which will address the comments that were received.
As Seattle City Light continues to refine the public benefits proposal associated with Substation Alternative 3 (SA3) forpresentation to the Design Commission, the other substation alternatives continue to be considered.

Design Milestone: Seattle City Light receiving approval from the Seattle Design Commission for the 60% design of the Denny Substation SA3 (SCL preferred alternative).
PROPOSED DISTRIBUTION NETWORK SYSTEMThe map to the left indicates where a new underground network power distribution system will be built in the South Lake Union and Denny Triangle area. The network will deliver reliable power to large scale users that are part of the fast growing area north of downtown. The design is nearing final
completion. Some existing customers will be converted to the new network service, and new customers will be connected to the network upon completion per request. This investment will ensure support for economic growth and the City of Seattle.
JANENE NAGY, OFFING
The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture unveiled the latest temporary art installation by artist Jenene Nagy, titled “offing”. This installation integrates an ocean wave of blue construction tarps running along the fence of Denny Way. This is the second of what will be a total of four installations, part of the ALL RISE program which aims to
evoke creativity and contemplation on the site proposed for the Denny Substation. More temporary additions are beginning to pop up, including artist Karl Burkheimer’s “In Situ,” an art sculpture that will eventually host dances and other performances. More to come soon, including new structural pieces and music!
