Wishes Come TrueCover Story:

Rylee, age 14, wished to meet a country singer. In May, she and her family fl ew to Tulsa, Oklahoma to have a spe-cial lunch with her favorite star.

While she was there, she was treated to one of her favorite things - horse therapy. Her family made the most of the wish by taking Rylee and her sister Tanner to the memorial garden in Okalahoma City and the new aquarium in Tulsa. Rylee returned home wearing her favorite country western singer’s black hat.

I wish… for a Buffalo.

In August 2001, Ethan, age 9 with cystic fi brosis wished for a buffalo. Wishing

Star does grant wishes for animals, mainly horses or ponies, but this was the fi rst buffalo wish. As unusual as this request seemed, Terry and Melinda, Ethan’s parents, were on board to have the wish granted.

The wish coordinator researched the care and feeding of buffalo, fi nding that one buffalo needed at least 10 acres of land on which to roam, graze and live. Terry and Melinda had 5 acres and were not purchasing any other property. Ethan’s wish was put on hold.

Several times each year, we call Ethan to fi nd out if he is ready to make another wish. In June 2006 Ethan called. Harley, his six-year old German Shepherd, needed a second knee surgery. With medical bills, medications and everyday household expenses, his parents were not anxious to add another surgery to their budget.

When Dr. Howard Lawrence and his partner, Dr. Joseph Hurari of Veterinary Surgical Specialists in Spokane were informed of Ethan’s wish, they offered the knee replacement surgery for Harley as a donation. Dr. Lawrence had done Harley’s fi rst surgery and was familiar with Ethan and his dog. The veterinarians had never been asked to participate in a wish and thought that his wish was so unselfi sh. They could not pass up an opportunity to help a wish

come true. Ethan was able to bring Harley home the

day after surgery.

I wish… to go to Wrestle Mania 2006!

Tim, a 17-year old with cerebral palsy,

his dad and three younger siblings have watched WWE and WWF together for years each Sunday evening. When Tim found out he was approved for a wish in May 2005, he wished for a family vacation to WrestleMania 2006. The whole family agreed this wish was the best and were so excited.

WrestleMania takes place in early spring and in a different city each year. The family was fi lled with anticipation throughout the next nine months as they waited to learn of where and when they would be going. Finally, in late February, the family learned they would be going to Chicago for six days.

Because Tim’s father Luis, is a single dad and Tim is confi ned to a wheelchair, the family had only taken camping trips or driven to visit relatives who live close to their home. The family had never been on an airplane or stayed in an elite hotel for any length of time. The family arrived in Chicago armed with “CityPass” tickets for major attractions. They set forth to explore as many places as possible.

The day of WrestleMania began with a “Bagels, Bacon and Biceps” brunch with 3000 attendees, including the wrestlers, their families, friends and many wish kids from all around the United States and other countries. Each wish kid in attendance was recognized by the emcee with a special introduction and a framed plaque autographed by the wrestlers.

That evening the family enjoyed some of the best seats in the arena. Tim’s WrestleMania wish came true and now the whole family has agreed that they will travel more and will start with other wrestling events. The whole family agreed everything was perfect.

Asuris employees donate time and talent to make blankets for children.

A child in crisis might need a little extra warmth, and the generosity of Asuris Northwest Health employees and the Wishing Star Blankie Program will help give that warmth to children in our area. Employees of Asuris donated 35 handmade blankets to the Wishing Star Foundation to be distributed to local emergency workers and hospitals for critically ill children and children facing traumatic events.

Employees created the blankets, which included several high-quality quilts, for our Team Regence summer drive. Most of the Asuris’s 17 staff members contributed to the drive in one way or another; many helped purchase supplies, while several gave their own time and talent to produce the blankets. Lois Terrill, Associate Sales & Account Representative for Asuris, designed three beautiful custom quilts for the

drive. Several other employees got together for a day-long blanket-making party, bringing family members and working as a team to produce more than two dozen fl eece blankets with whimsical themes and patterns.

Wishing Star blankets are given to kids in Central and Eastern Washington and Idaho who are hospitalized or critically

ill, or who have been removed from their home by police or other emergency workers because of a crisis such as a fi re. A warm, clean blanket is practical and can help comfort children in these times of need, Susan DeLano, Wishing Star Development Director, said.

“Sometimes it’s the cleanest thing they have and the only thing they have.”

Asuris employees Kathy Yates, PJ Rosenberg and Bob Boone helped

deliver the blankets Wednesday, Sept. 13 to representatives of Wishing Star, which is largely run through volunteer efforts. Written by: Anna Beard

Beyond The Wish

Branden, an 18-year old from McCall, Idaho who is undergoing treatment for bone cancer became our 1000th wish kid. His wish is to camp, hunt, or fi sh somewhere back east. He and his family have not traveled much outside of southern Idaho. We invited the family to Coeur d’ Alene for our 1000th wish celebration. Branden’s mom works for Tamarack Resort, who sponsored the airline tickets for all fi ve members of the family. With further sponsorships from the Davenport Hotel, Enterprise Car Rentals, The Coeur d’Alene Resort, and The Onion this family was all set for a celebration worthy of royalty. They arrived at the Spokane airport, were escorted to the Wishing Star offi ce to meet the staff, spent a relaxing afternoon at the Davenport Hotel and were driven to The Coeur d’Alene Resort where the ceremony took place. Branden released the fi rst of 23 white doves symbolizing the number of years Wishing Star has brought smiles to wish kids and their families. What Branden liked best about the celebration was sharing the fun with his family. He also shared that he liked meeting other wish kids. Thank you to the Holiday Inn Express for the hospitality shown our Regional Director, Tracy Shaw from Boise

Wishing Star is very proud to serve families for years after their children’s wishes come true. There is a saying here, “Once a wish family, always a wish family.” Each year our

Beyond The Wish

5

Christmas Program provides gifts to families in need because of medical expenses. We send over 750 birthday cards a year. Our chapters put on special events for families to attend. In Twin Falls we host a Christmas party. In the Spokane area families enjoy a Carrousel Party at Riverfront Park and Summer Festival at Granite Point Park. In the Tri Cities,

volunteers take families out boating on the Columbia River. The Sandpoint Chapter has a

volunteer pilot who takes wish families for sightseeing trips over Lake Pend Orielle. Each spring Silverwood gives us tickets to distribute for a “Night of Stars”. Knowing that our families need recreational opportunities, we are constantly seeking tickets to concerts, musicals, plays and sporting events. We seek donations of books, magazines and other items to distribute. Often when families have diffi culties they call on us and we refer them to other agencies which are able to assist. Last year a wish kid needed a service project for his high school requirements. He spent his hours organizing a fi ling cabinet. “Beyond the Wish” is what sets Wishing Star apart from other wish

granting organizations and we are proud to serve in this capacity.

April, age 5, with chronic obstructive lung disease and obesity was a shy little girl. For her wish, she wanted to meet Mickey Mouse. She went to Disneyland with her mother, broth-er and grandmother. Her mother wrote a journal for Wishing Star saying “She was tickled to see him…” and April kept saying, “For me! For me! For me!” The wish changed her life; April is no longer a shy girl. She now loves to be around people.

IFrom the Board Chair

I’ve made many referrals but have never been so impacted as when I saw the expression on my 13 year-old daughter’s face when she learned that a classmate of hers would become a wish child. “Because of me?” she asked, wide-eyed. I told her all it takes is one person coming forward and the ball starts rolling. This is an example of one child helping another. Is there anything more wonderful to see?

Imagine carrying a beautifully wrapped gift around and looking for someone to give it to. Then imagine fi nding an individual so deserving and eager to accept it. That’s what it’s like to make a referral. It’s a feeling beyond words.

Wish kids are not the only ones empowered by the wish. So is the individual who makes the call, logs onto our website or stops us to share a story. Help us fi nd these children. That simple gesture starts a chain reaction that affects many, many lives. Including yours.

Remember the Wishing Star Foundation When Estate Planning!

Lauren, age 4, was diagnosed with leukemia. At her daycare, one of the caregivers was a “wish sister”. She made the referral for Lauren’s wish. During the planning stages of the wish, Lauren and Melanie, her mother, would often stop by Wishing Star to visit. Lauren went to Disneyworld with her mom, dad and cousin. Lauren’s favorite thing about Disneyworld was getting to go to the front of the line on every ride and eating all the ice cream she wanted.
