Here are ten rules that can help you achieve financial success. 1. Arrange a family system for handling money and make certain that everyone in the family is involved and understands it. 2. Make a spending plan suited to your own income and needs. Don’t try to follow others – a spending plan is a personal system to help you and your family. 3. Decide on your family’s most important goals. Spend your money on things that will care for your family’s welfare and happiness. Take a minute to decide how important it really is to you and your family, before you make the final purchase. 4. Plan ahead for the entire year. A financial picture of your entire year will be a great guide and can help to meet your family’s financial goals. 5. Include all of your income and expenses. It’s usually easy for families to determine their income, but getting a grasp on expenses can be more challenging. Keeping receipts will help you track what you spend more accurately. 6. Use credit wisely. Don’t spend more on credit than you can afford to pay on a monthly basis. Responsible use of credit cards will help you establish a solid credit rating and avoid financial problems. 7. Pay yourself first by trying to save 10% of your income. If you can’t afford 10%, start with a smaller amount. Treat savings as a monthly bill. 8. Stick to your plan, but don’t be afraid to alter your program if you think it needs improvement. Never give up! Be determined and succeed. 9. Review your plan once a month. 10. Hold family meetings to review the progress together. Need help getting started? Tax Tips for First-Time Filers in CollegeUnless you’re an accounting major, filing taxes may not be your idea of a good time. But if you don’t file, you may end up leaving a lot of money on the table. If you’re going to file taxes for the first time this year, here are a few tips to make this task easier and less stressful:

• If taxes were withheld from your paycheck, even if you only earned a little money, file your taxes so you can get some of that money returned to you.• If you earned more than $10,400 in 2017, you must file a tax return.• You’re eligible for at least 3 tax breaks in the years you pay tuition: The American Opportunity Tax Credit, the Lifetime Learning

Credit, and the tuition and fees deductions.• If your parent still claims you as a dependent, you must mark off “I can be claimed on someone else’s return” on your form.• File early. Waiting until the last moment will only make the process more stressful. • You can file your Federal taxes for free and online by going to www.irs.gov. There are other free filing websites, found easily through an online search.• You’ll have to pay state taxes to each state you are a resident of during the tax year. If you attend college in one state but live in another, check the residency requirements to see if you qualify as a resident or nonresident of the state in which you attend school.

Here are the forms you’ll need to file your taxes and get your returns:• W-2: Your employer will give this to you. It’ll show any taxes that were withheld from your paycheck.• Form 1098-T: Your college will send you this tuition statement. It includes information you’ll need to claim education credits. • Form 8863: This is another form that will tell you if you qualify credits like the American Opportunity Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit. • Form 1098-E: Use this to deduct the interest you paid on a qualified student loan during the tax year. Your lender will send this form to you if you paid more than $600 in interest.

Filing taxes may seem like a boring chore, but if you don’t, you’ll miss out on a nice tax return. And who wouldn’t like a little extra cash in their account? Hm?

How to Make Goals That Stick

Set specific goals that motivate you and are high priorities in your life. For example: Saving $1,000 this year for your child’s college education.

Write down the goals and post them where you’ll see them often.Use positive words like “will” instead of “would like to” or “might.” For example, “I will save $1,000 a year for my child’s college education.”

Make an Action Plan and write out each step.

Place a check mark next to each step as you complete them.

o Open a savings account

o Figure out how much to put away each month to meet my goal.

o Saved $250

o Saved $500

o Saved $750

o Saved $1,000!

Basic Steps to Financial FitnessYour finances and the decisions you make about them change over time and are different from your friends’ or your parents’. Still, some broad guidelines may help you get a handle on your financial plans.

* For mortgages, lenders expect your payments to be no more than 28% of your monthly gross income (income before taxes, Social Security, and other deductions). Another method says that your PITI (principal, interest, property taxes and insurance) plus your total long-term debt (car payments, college loans, installment payments) should not exceed 45% of your gross income.

* How much should you be saving? Financial experts suggest three to six months’ take-home pay in a savings account. That can take time to build up, and you may need to raid your account even while you’re adding to it. Still, if you consistently put aside 5% of your take-home pay, using payroll deduction, you’ll reach your goal.

* For long-term retirement savings, at minimum put a percentage into your 401(k) that equals what your employer will match. Anything less and you’re actually giving up free money. Ideally, contribute the maximum your employer allows into your 401(k). Can’t swing that much while you’re saving for your child’s future education expenses? Keep this in mind: You can borrow to meet higher education expenses, but you can’t borrow for retirement expenses.
