THOUGHTS FROM THE JOURNEY

QUARTERLY NEWS

a quarterly publication highlighting peregrine events and services around the world in order to share best practices and lessons learned, promote

sustained leadership development, and foster continuous improvement in higher education.

Peregrine Academic Services obtained a cooperative agreement to deliver Bloomberg Media’s B-School Connection program and expand the distribution of Bloomberg Businessweek and Business Briefs to the global higher education sector. The agreement allows Peregrine to market and distribute the program for Bloomberg Media using Peregrine’s global network and distribution channels. In addition to the direct sales of Bloomberg Businessweek to higher education institutions, Peregrine intends to leverage the program with its existing service portfolio and provide comprehensive educational support services.

Bloomberg Media established the B-School Connection program for business schools in order to bring practical and contemporary lessons into the academic classroom. The program incorporates student and faculty resources based upon the weekly Bloomberg Businessweek publication. The success of the B-School Connection has been evident through its growing number of participating higher education institutions throughout the US, which currently includes more than 150 business schools and programs.

The B-School Connection offers contemporary learning resources to both students and faculty. Weekly instructor guides and Bloomberg Businessweek article reviews, which are written by expert faculty from leading business schools, include discussion questions that allow for practical application of course concepts in the classroom.

“We look forward to expanding the footprint of Bloomberg Businessweek across the international university market through Peregrine’s network,” says Lawrence Diamond, GM of Print Operations for Bloomberg Media. “With its award winning and insightful coverage of each week’s most important global business events, Bloomberg Businessweek is an excellent tool to bring classroom learning to life in real time events and business issues.”

During the second session of our Baldrige-based Executive Education Program, we talked about having a customer focus. Certainly there are a number of successful product-focused companies; however, customer-focused organizations also tend to be very successful. The key for a customer-focus is listening to the voice of the customer.Ask any business leader and I bet all would emphatically state that they listen to the voice of the customer. Many would talk about their customer satisfaction surveys, feedback processes, and perhaps even market analysis efforts, citing the facts and figures associated with the organization’s customer-centric approaches. Beyond the statistics, how does one truly listen to the voice of the customer?

My favorite example from the seminar participants was the story of the credit union manager who keeps a 3x5 card on each of her members. On this card, she notes the member’s interests, likes and dislikes, and some tidbits regarding the member’s relationship with the credit union. The card is updated after each visit, but more importantly, the card is used before and subsequently during the visit to help maintain a personal relationship with the member. Through that relationship, ideas for innovation and customer service emerge.

For this credit union leader, listening to the voice of the customer means to build and maintain the personal relationship. While it might be impossible to quantify what she does, the qualitative aspects are priceless.

The Association for Transnational Higher Education Accreditation (ATHEA) held its Spring Conference May 17-19 in Paris, France. The International School of Management hosted the meeting at its upscale premises in the center of the city. Peregrine Academic Services supports institutions of higher learning with a variety of accreditation consulting services aimed at helping ATHEA to become registered at the European Quality Assurance Register (EQAR). ATHEA was founded in May 2015.

ATHEA also conducted the first candidacy site visits at member schools in France, Switzerland, and The Netherlands. The THEA Board of Commissioners met at the conference. The commissioners worked on the first candidacy reports submitted by member institutions earlier this year.

The Board of Commissioners held its first quality assurance workshop, following the spring ATHEA meeting. The purpose of the workshop was to present the Self-Evaluation Manual to the institutions that are preparing to complete their self-evaluation. The workshop was facilitated by Bill Parrott and Olin Oedekoven.

Peregrine also plans to conduct a workshop sponsored by ATHEA on October 13, 2016 in Paris. The workshop will focus on opportunities and challenges for accreditation in the European higher education area. This is of specific importance to all universities and schools operating in the 50 member states region.

EUROPE

CEEMAN, the international association for management development in dynamic societies, and Peregrine Academic Services have signed a memorandum of understanding that will strengthen the cooperation between the two organizations.

Peregrine is official sponsor of the 24th CEEMAN Annual Conference taking place in Tallinn, Estonia from 28-30 September. The conference is the central annual event of CEEMAN bringing together more than 150 participants: deans and directors of business schools, leaders of international, regional management development institutions, international publishers, and partners, as well as business, government, and media representatives from around 40 countries worldwide.

This year’s conference topic will be Management Education for a Digital World. Since Estonia has a strong information technology sector and has been mentioned as the most “wired” and advanced country in Europe in the terms of e-Government and successful tech start-ups and initiatives, the conference participants will have the opportunity to experience Estonia first-hand. Besides insightful keynotes and plenaries, interactive roundtables, and discussions, the event will also feature an exhibition area and presentations from CEEMAN partners, including Peregrine.

For more information about the CEEMAN conference in Tallinn, please visit the conference website (www.ceeman.org/conference) or get in touch with CEEMAN at [email protected].

REGIONAL UPDATES | LESSONS LEARNED, EVENTS, AND CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

One of the challenges with business school accreditation is the requirement to benchmark student results with peer institutions. IACBE’s Principle #1 and ACBSP’s Standard #4, for example, require that the business schools collect data regarding program learning outcomes and compare the results against other schools in order to close the quality loop.

Several schools within Latin America use Peregrine’s assessment service, which is provided in Spanish, to address the programmatic accreditation requirements. A few of these schools were specifically recognized this spring at the IACBE and ACBSP annual conferences where the schools received their initial accreditation.

This fall, Peregrine Academic Services will be active in several major events within the Latin-American region in order to share the results of its work with participants and promote best practices. In November, we will be at the ACBSP International Conference in Cancun Mexico. In October, Peregrine will be participating and presenting in the 51th CLADEA Annual Conference in Medellin, Colombia. Peregrine will participate in the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) in San Antonio. Peregrine will also make a presentation at the III International Accreditation Forum that will take place in Guayaquil, Ecuador in October, and is sponsored by the Education Quality Accreditation Agency (EQUAA).

Luis Rodriguez describes how Peregrine

can help business schools gather data to address accreditation

requirements at a recent ACBSP regional meeting.

AFRICA AND MIDDLE EAST

LATIN AMERICA

The Africa Institute of Organization Development (AIOD) is organizing several business schools across Africa to access Peregrine’s services. Dr. Abraham Lincoln outlined the importance of the Peregrine Academic Services when speaking at the Vice Chancellors’ and Deans forum to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Council of Independent Universities (CIU) in Ghana on May 11, 2016. The Executive Secretary of the National Council of Tertiary Education expressed the strong interest and desire of the council to collaborate with Peregrine in Ghana to ensure that all business schools and relevant programs in Ghana receive the benefits of using Peregrine’s services, since the activities of Peregrine Academic services are in accordance with the strategic directions and priorities of the Council.

In Nigeria, Peregrine’s participation and exhibition at the 2016 AABS Connect Conference, which was hosted by Lagos Business School, brought Peregrine’s services to a continent-wide audience.

The Association of African Universities, the Association of African Business Schools, the Africa Institute of Organization Development, and the South African Association of Business Schools are some of the key players in Africa, collaborating with Peregrine towards providing services and solutions to business schools to enhance continuous academic improvement, quality assurance, and globally recognized accreditation.

Every day, about 1.5 million blogs are added to the web sphere – the giant black hole of knowledge with the incredible property of allowing anything to get out, quite unlike its astronomical counterpart. Of course, many blogs just enter and disappear. Others are reproduced, commented upon, and even cited.

As a leader in providing online assessment, education, and educational support services for colleges, universities, and corporate clients, Peregrine Global has its blog too – P2. The choice of P2 name is as a reminder that we are two corporate entities– Peregrine Academic Services and Peregrine Leadership Institute, but with one common purpose to make a difference in our world.

The blog serves as a forum for constructive discussion and dialogue on issues that affect all of us. Started as an experiment in September 2015, the site (http://www.p2theblog.com) has a collection of 19 blogs on a variety of topics – from moral dilemmas to performance management to the origins of failure. The experiment is here to stay thanks to the feedback received that range from “interesting” to “thought provoking” to “an elegantly simple way to understand the complex.”

With our avowed commitment to continuous improvement, we invite suggestions for future topics as well as for enhancing the appeal of the content. We welcome your contributions – please address them to [email protected].

Peregrine Academic Services hosted Users Group meetings this year at the annual conferences of IACBE in Memphis and ACBSP in Atlanta. The purpose of the events is to share ideas and promote best practices with our client school representatives.

The meetings this year also showcased two new service developments: the launch of our career readiness course service with YSN’s Exploring Your Potential, and our partnership with Bloomberg BusinessWeek and the B-School Connection. In addition to the debut of these new services, the meetings provided an opportunity to present our latest reporting features, explain technical integration into clients’ learning management systems, and discuss best practices learned through the clients’ experience with Peregrine’s assessments and academic leveling courses.

Through discussion with our clients, we explored our common goal of making current students ready for the world that awaits them after graduation. By using our academic leveling courses, several schools reported that their MBA graduation rate had increased significantly and improved the quality of their program. With the upcoming Career Readiness Course and integration of the B-School Connection Resource Center, Peregrine hopes to promote students’ success by making them avid world news readers, informed and aware of the possibilities available when they leave university with their new degree.

Peregrine has partnered with Your Success Now (YSN) to provide career readiness courses. The 4-course program allows young people to explore, understand, and describe their career goals. Based upon a globally validated and peer-reviewed approach, Exploring Your Potential (EYP) will rapidly become a game-changing in the field of career readiness.

YSN has been helping young people prepare and succeed in their career for over 20 years and has tested these methodologies in over 100 countries. Countless careers have been transformed by YSN’s programs. The EYP courses are a complete innovation compared to what currently exists. EYP takes a fresh, new approach by creating real engagement through scalable intimacy delivered through a dynamic online platform.

Jennifer Kushell wrote the New York Times bestseller Secrets of the Young & Successful, which was compared to What Color Is Your Parachute, but for the new generation. The concepts address the current marketplace and global environment, including volatility, uncertainty, and as a result, opportunity. The EYP program encourages students to take ownership of their paths and processes. It builds self-efficacy, passion, commitment, context, confidence, determination, ambition, and the soft skills that are essential to their employment prospects, success in their first jobs, and even more entrepreneurial pathways.

Peregrine Leadership Institute partnered with the Casper Area Chamber of Commerce for the fifth year to conduct in-depth leadership training for their 2015-16 Leadership Casper program. The program includes leadership-based seminars from Peregrine along with community-based awareness events collectively designed to develop new and emerging leaders for the Casper, Wyoming community.

Leadership Casper consists of 8 full-day sessions that begin in August with a retreat, and end in May with Leadercast, which is hosted by the Peregrine Leadership Institute in both Gillette and Casper. Seminar topics include leadership values, the MBTI® Type Indicator, communications and active listening, leadership styles, giving and receiving performance-based feedback, and sustaining the leadership journey.

Leadership Casper informs participants about issues facing Casper, Wyoming and surrounding Natrona County, and advises them about local resources through site visits, tours, and speaking with community leaders. Each session starts with practical and applicable leadership training provided by Chris Walsh, one of Peregrine’s leadership consultants. This year’s 20 Leadership Casper graduates leave with the knowledge and leadership skills required to get involved in their community and be the leaders for tomorrow.

THE BUSINESS MODEL CANVAS

The Business Model Canvas (www.strategyzer.com) represents a way to show the key elements of a business on a single page instead of traditional long and intricate business plan documents. The Canvas organizes key elements of the business into nine building blocks. With each block, a series of questions guide thinking about where the business is and where it should go.

The Canvas is in use in many leading companies such as GE, P&G, and Nestlé where it helps to manage strategy or fashion new growth engines. The Canvas is also an integral part of the Lean Startup methodology, where start-ups use it in their search for the right business model. The Canvas’s main benefit is helping to move beyond product-centric thinking and towards business-model thinking.

The power of the Canvas approach is that it allows for a rapid iteration of thinking in the strategy development process. With the need for organizational agility in today’s fluid business environment and markets, the Canvas is a solid tool to guide organizations towards customer-focused thinking. An excellent video of how to use the Canvas can be found on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoAOzMTLP5s.

As schools look to expand into the online higher education sector, the question often arises regarding the need for an online academic program manager. If the school only looks to provide a few online courses in conjunction with a traditional or blended program, perhaps a position focused solely on the online education aspects is not required.

If, however, a school looks to create a new online educational program where none previously existed, our experience suggests that it is essential that someone be designated as the Online Program Manager. Even if the online program mirrors the campus-based program, the nature of the online education program is such that it warrants unique considerations.

Just as the course guides, syllabi, and certainly the faculty teaching aspects are very different for online education when compared to campus-based education, so too are the administrative and management responsibilities. Both on-campus and online programs share the same quality goals, yet each has its own unique requirements and both require specialized individuals who can effectively manage the programs.
