Synopsis

We live in a world of stunning complexity. Atoms combine to become mole-

cules. Molecules of all varieties join in a metabolic dance to make cells. Cells interact

with cells to form organisms; organisms interact with organisms to form ecosystems,

economies, and societies. Where did this grand architecture come from? In an

endeavor to understand these phenomena, we go beyond physics; into the world of

philosophy, cosmology, psychology, and theology. Quantum phenomena challenge

our understanding of reality and force us to re-examine the concept of existence. Our

belief influenced our perspective and thinking, ultimately, shaped us into what we are

today. Quantum Physics contributed to the philosophy and the steady growth of

knowledge of our universe, which over time, constantly reevaluated and refined. It

challenged the classical ideas and encouraged scientific explorations. Quantum

Physics dominates the atomic world, the nanoscale dimension where Nanotechnology

occurs. A dimension that is important to understand as we observe the advancement

in this field. We can now see atoms, cells, and DNA at the sub-nanometer level with

Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), measure and move molecules with

Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and modify DNA using manmade DNA walkers. Nanotechnology has expanded the horizon into the new frontier of a stronger

understanding of Quantum Physics. It opens our minds to exciting possibilities. It

shows us that we have boundless potential that can uncover the connection between

the physical and mental; between the rational and the spiritual; and between the order

of the universe and the order of the human world. Thus, it is why Quantum Physics

is essential as a basis of Nanotechnology and its philosophical implication towards

understanding the inner dimension of life and destiny of Man.

Journey in the unexpected space and time

(1968 – 2019)

―But they planned and Allah (also) planned, and Allah is the best planner‖ -The Holy Quran 3:54

Life is full of the unexpected and the unpredictable. We made plans for our life and the future, but often we are presented with an unexpected turn of events. I was born on the dawn of Friday morning (May 24th,1968) at home in the peaceful village of Solok Duku, in the municipality of Masjid Tanah, Melaka. I am the 7th out of ten siblings. Having a big family and growing up in kampung, I had an enjoyable and memorable childhood. My father was a former British Army in Singapore and later transferred to Trendak Camp Melaka as a Malay army. He then worked for the Government’s Labour Department in Kuala Lumpur. Once a month, he will return to see the family. Being a soldier, he has a strong character and very disciplined; his presence daunted most of the villagers and bullies scattered at the sound of his footsteps. My mother stayed in the village to look after us. She devoted all her life to her children even though she worked as a Rubber Tapper. Every day, she rose early in the morning to solat and prepare our breakfast before walking to the estate 3km away. Indeed, she is truly inspirational with her kindness, strength, faith, devotion, and wisdom It has always been my father’s dream to see me excel in my studies. Every time I shower whenever he is home, he would stand outside and remind me of the importance of knowledge. For him, education is the key to a better life. My strongest supporter has always been my mother. She supports every decision I made and comforts me with every hardship I faced. In every situation, she always keeps me in her prayers. Although we fight, my siblings and I always protect, support and love each other. As a young boy, I developed an affinity for science. I recall the thrill of being able to build and assemble a bicycle or a car from scratch. It is my passion to understand the mechanism behind every phenomenon, I still remember the feeling when I went scavenging alone on a long road in the middle of the night just to find abandoned bicycle which later was fixed and used by me. The joy and satisfaction I felt while working on them may have been the reason that my inclination prospers at a young age. My first formal education was at Sekolah Kebangsaan Masjid Tanah. It was the first Malay school in that area and understandably called Sekolah Melayu. I went to school in the morning and took a Quranic lesson in the afternoon. In 1981, the first unexpected event unravels when I was selected to join the Malacca High School program. This came as a surprise as I did not apply for the program. I decided to grab this opportunity but leaving my mother and my comfort zone was tough. I had a hard time adjusting to my new routine and I must learn how to live independently and responsibly. Being in a board-ing school, everything was shared, and you no longer feel special. Most importantly, I started to really miss my mother. I kept begging her to transfer me back home, but she wouldn’t budge. Over time, I made friends from all over Malaysia and grew fond of the school up until today. The experience has taught me valuable lessons about life and strengthen my character.

My journey to pursue knowledge come to an unexpected turn again when I was offered to study Civil Engineering at UTM Kuala Lumpur. The study only lasts 1 semester as I realize that I have no interest in this field. My heart was just not into it. I returned to MHS as a Form 6 student. Upon completing my STPM, I was accepted to study in the Faculty of Science, University of Malaya. It is unbelievable to finally pursue my passion in the country’s top university. The grandeur and the sacredness were so surreal. In my first year, I was in a dilemma to choose mathematics or physics as my specialization. Both subjects are equally interesting and fascinating. I was always inclined to question and to understand nature; from very tiny particles into the vast universe. Knowing that it will give me more satisfaction, I finally choose physics over mathematics. During this period, I also started to develop an interest in the History and Philosophy of Science which has expanded my perspective in science and its history. During my final year, I investigated the theoretical elementary particle physics using the Feynman Diagram under the supervision of Prof. S. P. Chia. I was conferred with BSc in Physics in 1993 and shortly after, I was appointed as Tutor for History and Philosophy of Science. I was given the responsibility to teach undergraduate students for the faculty of Science. Through this experience, I discovered an affinity and enjoyment of exploring science historically and philosophically. Concurrently, I worked with Professor Mohamed Ridza Wahiddin and Professor Muhammad Rasat Muhammad to investigate and develop a theoretical model of atoms in the squeezing mode. 1997 was a blissful year as I graduated with M.Phil and marry my sweetheart, Dr. Shima. We are blessed with 2 handsome sons, Am and Ikmal, also a beautiful daughter, Munirah. During that year too, I was appointed as Biomedical Engineering lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya. A year later, I was appointed as Coordinator of the Biomedical Engineering Program while becoming a Ph.D. student at the Physics Department. Being a coordinator was very demanding and juggling between work, study and family was extremely difficult. Finally, it has taken a toll on me. I decided to resign and dedicated my time to research. I finally graduated in 2005 in Theoretical Advanced Materials (Solid State Ionic) under the supervision of Professor Abdul Kariem Arof. There is always a rainbow after the rain. After the struggles, things just fall into place and life could not have been better. My third unexpected event in my life comes with the appointment as lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Department, UM. I did not expect to make a comeback. In the following years; I went to Mekah to accompany my mother for Hajj, was a visiting scientist at the University of Cambridge, appointed as the coordinator of Materials Engineering program and created Nanomaterials Engineer-ing Group. The group consists of active master and Ph.D. student and are equipped with two research laboratories. In 2010, I was promoted to Associate Professor. I took my first sabbatical leave and went to Abdussalam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Italy as a visiting researcher. In 2015, I was promoted to Professor of Materials Engineering. After serving for the last 13 years in the Faculty of Engineering, I was unwillingly transferred to Nanotechnology and Catalysis Research Centre (NANOCAT). I tried my best

to remain in the faculty of Engineering, but to no avail. I had to concede and to accept the decision of my peers. I endured and considered this as the next unexpected event of my life. While doing my best in NANOCAT, I was still hopeful that someday I will be given the opportunity to return to Engineering as I will always consider it my home. Then in 2017, I was appointed as the Director of NANOCAT after the sad passing of its founder, Allahyarhamah Professor Saharifah Bee. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Noorsaadah personally asked me to accept this position. This was the fifth unexpected turn of the event of my life as I never had any intention to remain here. At first, it was so overwhelming trying to assume responsibility for a huge centre. Attempting to preserve the heritage and to bear the hope of the top management of the university was very daunting. My health started to decline during the early weeks. Being the Director of NANOCAT is a huge challenge. However, I must keep going forward and bring the centre to a greater height as the aspiration of the university. I will always keep pushing NANOCAT and its staff and student to reach and hopefully exceed the aim of the centre by fostering through training and advancement in research. It is now my dream to see NANOCAT standing tall in the eyes of the world.
