Business Drivers

DB Schenker in Singapore began their ISO 9001 journey in 1993. The ISO 9001 standard outlines a process approach to implementing and supporting a QMS. With the QMS in place, Schenker Singapore is focused towards achieving quality goals. The management team is provided with data on a continual basis and is able to see progress towards business objectives, thereby enabling them to take appropriate action and improve consistency of output.

DB Schenker in Singapore adopted a proactive approach towards transitioning to the new ISO 9001:2015 standard. The migration was important for Schenker Singapore to enable them to demonstrate to their customers that their management is fully committed to quality excellence through continual improvement and that they are positioned competitively at the forefront of maintaining high service quality.

Commenting on this achievement, Charlie Kok, Managing Director at Schenker Singapore said, ‘’The management of DB Schenker is fully committed to Quality Excellence through continual improvement. For us, the main objective of ISO 9001:2015 is to provide confidence in our organisation’s ability to consistently provide customers with conforming products and services, as well as to enhance customer satisfaction. Through our extensive range of training and assessment services, LRQA is helping organisations worldwide transition to the revised ISO standards.

Transition

Transition planning commenced in February 2015 when DB Schenker in Singapore approached LRQA to discuss ways in which the transition programme could commence to ensure a robust and positive approach to support the organisation’s commitment to continual quality improvement.

Through the support of LRQA and their robust assessment methodology, Schenker Singapore formed a team consisting of thirty key members from various business units and began their journey towards ISO 9001:2015.

LRQA initially started supporting DB Schenker by conducting in-house training sessions for the directors and management teams. The objective of these sessions was to ensure comprehensive appreciation and understanding of what the new requirements are, how they specifically relate to their roles, whilst also providing a range of optional cost effective ways to guarantee those requirements are met in a manner that is appropriate for the needs of the organisation and its key stakeholders. In addition, to help to develop the transition plan, LRQA undertook a gap analysis to assess Schenker Singapore’s existing QMS against the requirements of the new international standard.

Thereafter, a preliminary assessment was undertaken – the purpose of which was to provide the client with a tailored evidence-based assessment of

those areas for improvement that had been identified by the organisation. The reported outcome then fed into the transition plan for resourcing and action. Following the assessment, Schenker Singapore then implemented solutions to close the gaps and address any identified areas of focus across all of their ten locations over a period of seven months.

LRQA’s range of transition services, sector specific technical experts and a client-centric approach helped focus on areas that are applicable to Schenker Singapore’s business environment. This enabled LRQA to deliver robust insight and assessment into Schenker Singapore’s systems to help them deliver a smooth transition to ISO 9001:2015.

Moving Forward

With the success of transitioning to ISO 9001:2015, Schenker Singapore is also planning to roll out the transition plan to the newly revised international environmental management system standard ISO 14001:2015. In addition, the team has also started exploring other quality standards including ISO 13485 (medical devices) and AS 9120 (aerospace) that will similarly be adopting the new ISO 9001:2015 framework. These initiatives will – in the near future – further strengthen Schenker Singapore’s competitiveness and provide confidence in the organisation’s ability to consistently provide customers with conforming products and services, as well as to enhance customer satisfaction.
