It often seems that life gets in the way of healthy eating; sometimes it’s a matter of grabbing what you can and making something

quick and easy.

Seafood is the original ‘fast food’ requiring very little cooking. Not only is it quick and very easy to prepare and cook, it carries many health benefits and can be versatile but economical too!

We are proud of our Grimsby heritage and as well as ‘Traditionally Smoked in Grimsby’ Haddock and Cod Fillets we are pleased to offer a bespoke range of ‘Handmade in Grimsby’ ready meals and pies, breaded and battered portions, fish fingers and fish cakes. Fish is…

…Good for a nutrient boost

Seafood is the ultimate ‘super’ food. All varieties are packed with protein, and provide omega-3 fats and many vitamins and minerals. Choosing different types means you’ll benefit from the wide range of nutrients found in fish.

…Good for your heart

The naturally occurring omega-3 fats found in seafood help the heart to work properly and keep blood pressure and levels of triglycerides (raised levels of which are linked to heart disease) normal. All fish, including white fish and shellfish contain omega-3 fats, although oily fish contain the greatest amounts.

…Good for your brain

It’s nicknamed ‘brain food’ for a reason! One of the omega-3 fats naturally found in fish – DHA – helps the brain to function normally. It’s especially important that pregnant and breastfeeding mums get enough of this nutrient as DHA is vital for their baby’s brain development.

…Good for your eyes

DHA is also important for normal eyesight. Again mums-to-be and breastfeeding mums need enough of this omega-3 fat as it’s important for their baby’s eye development.

…Good for your waistline

White fish and most shellfish are high in protein and low in fat, which makes it easier for us to control our calories. As well as helping us maintain our muscles, the British Nutrition Foundation says protein helps us feel fuller for longer.

Fish is a truly nutritious food and can make an important contribution to a healthy, balanced diet. That’s why health experts say we should all eat two portions a week, one of which should be an oil-rich fish such as mackerel, sardines, pilchards, fresh tuna, kippers or salmon. Sadly though, many of us fail to achieve this – on average, most adults only manage one portion a week (children and teenagers have even less). As for oily fish, we only eat one portion every three weeks! Here’s why we should eat more.

The British Heart Foundation advises Plaice, Cod or Hake can be included with a healthy Mediterranean style diet, as well as oily fish like Trout, Salmon or Sardines’ visit www.bhf.org.uk for further information.

What’s a portion?A portion of fish is around 140g when cooked (that’s

around 170g before cooking).

Seafood provides the following vitamins and minerals…• B vitamins, especially B3, B6 and B12 – these produce energy and

support the nervous system• Vitamin D – oily fish are one of the few naturally rich sources of

this nutrient, which supports healthy bones, teeth, muscles and immunity

• Potassium – helps maintain normal blood pressure and muscle and nerve function

• Phosphorus – important for normal bones and teeth.

• Zinc – shellfish provide this nutrient, which supports immunity and helps keep skin, hair and nails healthy

ADVICE ON ENCOURAGING YOUR KIDS TO ACQUIRE A TASTE FOR HEALTHY FOOD

Recipe: Prawn Pizza for 4 hungry kids

Ingredients:

100g Regal Superior Prawns (defrosted)

1 thin pizza base

6 tbsp no added salt passata

Handful of cherry tomatoes, cut into wedges

3 tbsp sweetcorn

(or defrosted frozen sweetcorn)

125g ball mozzarella cheese, cut into thin slices

Fresh thyme leaves, Black pepper

Fish for all the family

Method:

1) Ask an adult to turn on the oven at 200°C/Gas Mark 6 with the oven shelf at the highest setting.

2) Wash your hands and get ready to cook.

3) Place the pizza base on to a baking sheet – make sure it’s big enough!

4) Spread the passata over the pizza base and top with the tomatoes, sweetcorn and prawns.

5) Cover with the cheese, the fresh thyme leaves and a grind of black pepper.

6) Bake for 15–20 minutes until the cheese has melted and the pizza is golden and yummy.

7) Cut into slices and enjoy with a crispy green salad or vegetable sticks.

Cook’s tipAdd extra vegetables to the

topping such as strips of pepper and sliced mushrooms or make it spicy by adding a sprinkle of

dried chilli flakes.

If you don’t have a pizza base you could try this on a naan

bread, pitta or even a tortilla!

● Start early… It’s probably no surprise that

children who are introduced to seafood at an early age are more likely to enjoy fish and eat it regularly. Fish can be introduced as early as 6 months when the baby is weaned. Visit www.nhs.uk for more information and the best types to try.

● Start Simple… Look for small portions of mild flavoured fish and cook very

simply, adding minimal flavours. See how much your child enjoys fish in its purest form, especially if you point out the health benefits. You may be surprised!

● Fish Twist… Try and substitute the usual meat protein for fish where you can.

Taco Tuesday and Fajita Friday can just as easily include fish and prawns rather than meat. For children who require a bit more encouragement, introduce either marinated or breaded and battered products. Make it exciting, a dip sometimes does the trick.

● Get Hands On… Children tend to engage more and

enjoy something that they have helped to create. Why don’t you try our fish pizza (p6) or even get your child to help you make a fish pie for the whole family!

● Be consistent… Try and encourage seafood twice a week so that it becomes ‘the

norm’. The more familiar something is, the more likely your child will eat it.

Quality is paramount; our aim is to supply our customers with the very best seafood available.

Unlike many fish counters, our fresh fish has not been previously frozen. We source the finest fresh fish each day and our technical department quality check every intake using the industry standard Torry assessment, our fish scoring an average of 9 compared with the supermarket acceptance of 7-7.5 out of 10.

We have third party SALSA accreditation and full traceability on all of the seafood that comes into our factory, meaning we can trace a product back to the exact vessel and catch area.

Our expert filleters and packers carefully handle and prepare the fish so that we can be confident that each order will arrive with the customer at its absolute best.

Along with our fresh fish we have access to a range of frozen seafood and shellfish from specialist suppliers around the world. This helps us to guarantee excellent quality, choice and value.

The fresh fish is prepared and packed by our team of experienced fishmongers at our factory site in Grimsby; we will prepare your order to suit your requirements and offer services such as skinning, boning and portioning.

Our objective at Regal is to supply our customers with information about the fish we supply to enable them to make an informed decision about the species they choose to purchase and consume.

We have decided to incorporate a system on our website that has been devised by the Seafish Authority, a non-departmental public body set up in 1981 to improve efficiency and standards within the seafood industry.

This system is called RASS (Risk Assessment for Sourcing Seafood) and customers will be able to access facts and figures about the species of interest that has been collated by Seafish.

OUR ETHICAL APPROACH TO RESPONSIBLE FISHING AND SUSTAINABILITY

Our principle aim is to ensure that the wild fish we supply is responsibly caught from sustainable fishing grounds... a vital issue we’re sure you agree.

We work hard to provide a varied range of products and actively encourage our customers to try lesser known species through recipe suggestions and promotions.

By using lesser utilised varieties of fish, we can assist in helping take the pressure off the more popular species.

We also supply farmed fish such as salmon and trout – our salmon is carefully sourced from well-managed fish farms in Scotland, the Shetlands, Norway and the Faroes, whilst our trout is farmed locally in Louth, Lincolnshire.

Sustainably sourced Shellfish

Our locally sourced crabs and lobsters are wild caught on the East Coast of England - most from a small stretch of coastline in East Yorkshire between the iconic nature reserve of Spurn Point and the historic harbour of Bridlington.

They are produced thoughtfully and are fully traceable from pot to plate, brought to us by local fishermen. Our Crabs and Lobsters are caught the old fashioned way using pots – a low impact and sustainable method.

The modern day boats we use have the highest standards. For example, they will not land a crab smaller than 140mm, compared to the standard 115mm in Norfolk. Crabs and Lobsters with roe are released to encourage reproduction and sustainability.

When caught, they are handled with care and caution to avoid any stress and then checked by hand to make sure they are live before being processed. This is good ethical practice and it also avoids bad or dead Crabs spoiling the taste of the entire batch. A smaller

operation makes this possible and, unfortunately, mass producers tend to avoid this step and many crabs get crushed on larger boats.

Our supplier rewards fishermen who champion sustainability. The fishermen that provide our crabs and lobsters help to clean up the coast as they go with specialist picking equipment. It’s not their mess but it is their environment and they care, like us, about the future of that stunning stretch of coastline.

We don’t often get a chance to eat UK lobsters in the UK. It’s a shame that 90% of our lobsters are currently exported to Europe where it is perceived they’ll pay more for quality and the UK market is offered, in return, cheaper Canadian lobsters.

So we’re very excited to provide you with excellent quality, locally sourced crabs and

lobsters with that guarantee of sustainability and flavour.

Frozen at Sea Fillets – Fresh as Fresh can be?

We responsibly source our market fresh fish here at Regal but there are times when fish is not in peak season. During these times we offer a frozen alternative which will have been caught when in plentiful supply and often frozen on board the vessel within hours of catch to lock in the freshness.

Our Frozen at Sea Cod and Haddock are sourced from the Cold Arctic Waters of the North Atlantic and frozen within 8 hours of being caught to lock in the freshness.

This fish is fully sustainable and caught in accordance with MSC certification so you can be assured of a responsibly sourced fantastic quality product.

Ingredients:

Serves 4

600g skinned & boned white fish, fresh or defrosted

2 tbsps olive oil

1 onion

2 cloves garlic

2 inch piece fresh ginger

2 red chillies

4 tbsps Tikka Masala curry paste

1 x 400ml can reduced-fat coconut milk

Freshly ground black pepper

1 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped

Enough rice for 4, cooked

Method:

1) Heat the oil, crush the garlic and finely slice the onion, then cook gently until softened and slightly caramelised – it will take 10–15 minutes.

2) Chop and add the ginger and chillies to the onion-garlic mix and cook for a minute.

3) Stir in the curry paste and coconut milk until well mixed.

Bring this mixture to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, until it has reduced slightly.

4) Cut the white fish into large cubes and add to the sauce.

Season the mix with the black pepper and pop on the lid, then simmer for 5 minutes until the fish has turned opaque and is just flaking.

5) Sprinkle on the chopped coriander and enjoy with your rice.

Ingredients:Serves 2

2 Regal Salmon fillet portions boned, fresh or defrosted

4 tbsps breadcrumbs

1 tbsp finely grated parmesan cheese

2 tbsps green pesto

Method:1) Thoroughly mix the pesto,

parmesan and breadcrumbs.

2) Spread the mixture over the Salmon. Press it down to compact it slightly.

3) Bake at 200°C for 15–18 minutes, depending on how thick the fillets are, or until the flesh has changed colour from translucent to pink.

4) Serve with potatoes and peas or a green salad.
