Page 5: Quality control at Polaroid

Focus Problem Polaroid planned to introduce a major new product

film in late 1985

Polaroid wants to decrease sampling without adversely affecting quality

Polaroid wants to free up resources for the new product and get lower cost

Page 6: Quality control at Polaroid

Solutions Project Green light

mission → make quality control process more effective

Had 3 key element

1. Statistical process controls principles

2. Production operators would be given the process control tools

3. QC Auditors concentrate on training operators and operationalizing specifications on new products

Solution Description Existing

Process

Greenlight

Setting on equipment

Free to changes the speed,temperature,etc

Used standard settings

Maintenance person

Had unique solitions

Based on best practice procedures

Research Doesn’t have evaluation program to make a standard

Have evaluation program to make a standard

Lessons Learned Run the Process with the Standards

Periodic Evaluation to make the standards

Apply PDCA
