Second Hand market in Belgium - Sector Structure

1. « Brocantes » (Flea markets)2. Internet – specialised magazines3. For profit organisations4. Non-profit organisations

The latter two categories are present in the country with a coverage of approximately 650 second hand shops.


Brocantes - Flea Markets

* Widely spread phenomenon with apx. 1.200 brocantes every year* Some are very popular and renowned * Basically everyone can participate* Some limitations on items that one can sell expecially for new products* Not so many are professionals


Specialised press

1. Specialised magazines once very popular are loosing ground vs. websites2. Distributed door-to-door for free3. Mainly for cars and properties. Little else.

4. Some have now their own internet sites


Internet

1. eBay

* 1 Mio members officially registered * one item sold every 3,5 seconds * 20.000 items sold in one single day * 2.000 people gaining important revenues from selling items on eBay * An eBay university for beginner and professionals has been created

Collection is free of charge.* A minimum of five different types of goods for sale.* The centre must work professionally, contribute to reuse and recycling and to sustainable development,* Reuse has always priority over recycling,* Create employment for underprivileged groups,* Collaborate on a structural basis with the governments,* Recognize the role of the federation in case of conflict.
