Hardware
All hardware and computer components are readily available and commercial quality. The Touch
Trainer hardware and software combination have been tested to ensure:
Smooth performance of the flight simulator and other software components
At least 20Hz for the flight simulator
At least 15Hz for instrumentation except where aircraft equipment has a slower update rate.
Adequate size and resolution of touch monitors. Instrument indications can be read and touch
sensitive areas easily actuated.
Some text used for decoration may not be to this standard
Expansion. Future releases of software can be expected to perform adequately and additional
hardware components added without major upgrading of equipment. Expansion capabilities
will be somewhat limited because of cost.
Software The software integrated into the TouchTrainer is classified into functional areas and described
below.
Flight Simulation including aircraft performance, out of the window view (OOW) and instructor
operation station (IOS). The Touch Trainer uses Laminar Researches X-Plane as its flight
simulation component.
Qualification and Approval Guide (QAG) for the FlyThisSim Touch Trainer V2.82
FlyThisSim Compliance Table for the FTS TouchTrainer Page 12
Aircraft Models. The aircraft models (.acf files) have been modified and approved for use by
FTS. These models are enhanced or replaced by SimAVIO to provide additional aircraft specific
electrical and navigational systems data to improve simulation fidelity. Other aircraft models
should not be used. Use of a non-approved aircraft model will be detected and the user
informed of the status. If this status window is displayed the training should be halted until the
correct model is loaded.
Out of the Window View (OOW). The OOW field of view is approximately 45 degrees horizontal
by 15 degrees vertical. With practice this is adequate for takeoff and landing but is not
optimized for VFR training. Where the VX visual system option is provided the OOW view is
approximately 100 * 35 degrees displayed on three monitors above the main touch screen. This
allows more screen space for instrumentation on the main touch screen allowing more accurate
instrument panel representations. It also extends functionality into VFR training such as; airfield
ground handling and signage interpretation, cross country mission rehearsal and map
interpretation. It also provides a more immersive environment and attractive training device.
Out of the window views can also be displayed on 100 degrees horizontal and 70 degree vertical
FOV or 200 degrees horizontal and 70 degree vertical FOV
Aircraft systems including electrical buses and distribution
The TouchTrainer enhances X-Plane to provide additional aircraft specific systems modeling of
electrical busses so that the aircraft checklists can be used. However, not every component in
the aircraft is modeled. This means that while electrical bus state, voltages and equipment
connectivity to the busses are modeled correctly bus loads are typical and may be incorrect for
ancillary equipment.
Simulation of TAA avionics systems including autopilot.
The TouchTrainer enhances or replaces the autopilot system to be an aircraft specific simulation.
It provides its own modeling of reduction of vertical velocity commanded before altitude
capture, leg interception and GPS glideslope capture. In particular the TouchTrainer has
enhanced autopilot operation for missed approach sequences ensuring correct operation.
The TouchTrainer enhances X-Plane with a complete WAAS GPS Flight Deck simulation, FTS’s
SimAVIO2 is used to provide these facilities.
Integration of hardware devices such as touch screens and aircraft facsimile hardware
X-Plane integrates to flying, trim, throttle and mixture controls
SimAVIO2 integrates to avionics control hardware.
Audio
o X-Plane is used to generate aircraft environment and equipment sounds such as engine
noise, wheel rumble, marker and Morse code and aerodynamic noise.
o SimAVIO is used to generate all other avionics specific warning tones
Navigation Data. The following features are available:
Airspace. Class A, B, C, D and special use airspace, airports, obstacles, navigational beacons are
provided in PFD and MFD map presentations.
o Terrain. Terrain is represented as a Shaded Relief Map, in order to keep load times to a
minimum and reduce memory requirements this data is typically half to one quarter of
Qualification and Approval Guide (QAG) for the FlyThisSim Touch Trainer V2.82
FlyThisSim Compliance Table for the FTS TouchTrainer Page 13
the resolution in the aircraft. The effects of this can only be seen at lower map ranges
when few coastal airfields may appear to be in the water.
o Cultural Data. Roads, geographical boundaries coastline etc. are typical of the
geographical data seen on Flight Deck equipment. Not all the geographical layers seen
on specific equipment are available.
o Aeronautical Data. The National Flight Database (NFD) from the FAA is used to provide
airport and approach waypoint, NDB, VOR and other data.
o GPS, RNAV, ILS, LOC, VOR, and NDB based approaches with GPS overlays for initial and
missed approach segments.
Common Components
The computer system hardware and software, simulator software and Instructor and simulator controls
are common to all versions of the TouchTrainer. Reconfiguration of a TouchTrainer to simulate different
aircraft requires the user to load a different aircraft model file. This will change aircraft performance,
instrument panel and avionics configurations. Different aircraft models may require the TouchTrainer
physical controls configuration to be adjusted.
Physical Control Configurations Typical arrangements of control columns, side-sticks, yokes, throttles and rudder pedals are shown
below.
The Touch Trainer can be easily and quickly reconfigured to simulate aircraft of different configurations. When the desktop configuration is changed the user must shut down the simulator, replace the controls and restart. Software test routines ensure that physical controls are connected correctly after reconfiguration disabling the simulator in case of a fault conditions. Where TouchTrainers have table and cockpit environments control configurations are similarly reconfigurable

Section 8. FlyThisSim TouchTrainer BATD Design Criteria
Ref Requirement Compliant Notes 8.a Controls
(1) Physical flight and aircraft system controls should be recognizable as to their function and how they are to be
manipulated solely from their appearance. Physical flight
and aircraft system controls eliminate the use of interfaces such as a keyboard, mouse, or gaming joystick to control
the represented aircraft model in simulated flight.
Yes FTS TouchTrainer can be operated entirely through the use of touch screens and other physical flight and aircraft system controls. The touch screens allow immediate recognition of controls through the display of photo realistic images. Manipulation is natural and obvious.
(2) For the purposes of this AC, virtual control is any input device to control aspects of the simulation (such as
setting aircraft configuration, location, and weather) and
to program, pause, or freeze the device. Virtual controls
should be primarily for the instructor’s use.
Yes Instructor’s controls are described in the accompanying document:
“TouchTrainer: System Description”
(3) Except for setup and/or fault mode entry, neither the
keyboard nor the mouse may be used to set or position any
feature of the BATD in the represented aircraft for the
maneuvers or flight training to be accomplished. See the
control requirements listed below for necessary equipment
as applicable to the aircraft model represented. The pilot
must operate the additional equipment needed in order to
accomplish a training procedure as listed in this appendix
in the same manner in which it would be operated in the
represented aircraft. For example, landing gear, wing
flaps, cowl flaps, carburetor heat control, and mixture,
propeller, and throttle controls.
Yes All pilot operated controls are actuated by touch screen except for elevator, aileron, rudder, elevator, aileron and rudder trim, throttle, and mixture controls. In all cases manipulation is natural and obvious.
(4) The physical arrangement, appearance, and operation
of controls, instruments, and switches required by this
appendix should model at least one aircraft in the family
of aircraft represented as closely as practicable.
Manufacturers are expected to use their best efforts to
recreate the appearance, arrangement, operation, and
function of realistically placed physical switches and other
required controls representative of a generic aircraft
instrument panel that includes at least the following:
• Master/battery;
• Magnetos for each engine (as applicable);
• Alternators for each engine; • Fuel boost pumps for each engine;
• Avionics master;
• Pitot heat; and • Rotating beacon/strobe, navigation, taxi, and
landing lights.
Yes The appearance and arrangement of all controls for the aircraft simulated can be found in the accompanying
document: “TouchTrainer: System Description”
These items are operated by touch screen where they are represented ‘as aircraft’.
Qualification and Approval Guide (QAG) for the FlyThisSim Touch Trainer V2.82
FlyThisSim Compliance Table for the FTS TouchTrainer Page 22
(5) When an FAA-approved BATD is in use, only the software package evaluated and approved by the FAA may be loaded for use to avoid negative impact on
available system resources. This may require a separate
user profile for ATD operation.
Yes The TouchTrainer uses a separate profile for operation

8.c Control Inputs
(1) Time from control input to recognizable system
response (transport delay) must be 300 milliseconds or
less. The manufacturer listed in the approval guide
submitted for FAA approval must certify to this standard.
Yes Maximum transport delay is calculated as 2*X-Plane iteration period (33msec) + 1*SimAVIO iteration period (66msec) + 2*screen refresh period (18msec).
Maximum Transport Delay is: 2*33 +66 +2* 18= 168 milliseconds
(2) The control inputs must be tested by the computer and
software at each start-up and displayed as a confirmation
message or a warning message that the transport delay
time or any design parameter is out of original tolerances.
This test should consider the items listed under “Display
Yes The TouchTrainer Supervisor program tests control inputs and displays a confirmation message as required.

instrument, including approach procedures (each with an aural identification feature), and a marker
beacon receiver. For example, an ILS,
non-directional radio beacon (NDB),
Global Positioning System (GPS),
Localizer (LOC) or Very high frequency
Omnidirectional Range (VOR).
Graduated markings as indicated below
must be present on each indication as
applicable. The marking should include:
o One-half dot or less for course/glide
slope deviation (i.e., VOR, LOC, or ILS),
o 5 degrees or less for bearing deviation
for automatic direction finder (ADF) and radio magnetic indicator (RMI), as applicable,
o A clock with incremental markings for
each minute and second, or a timer with a display of minutes and
seconds,
o A magnetic compass with incremental
markings each 10 degrees or less; The compass must display the proper lead or lag during turns,
o A transponder panel that displays the
current transponder setting, and
o A fuel quantity indicator(s) that
displays the fuel remaining, either in analog or digital format, as appropriate for the aircraft or family of aircraft represented.
(2) All instrument displays listed above must be visible
during all flight operations. The update rate of all displays
must provide an image of the instrument that:
• Does not appear to be out of focus or
illegible,
• Does not appear to “jump” or “step” to a
distracting degree during operation, and
• Does not appear with distracting jagged lines
Yes

(4) Displays must reflect dynamic behavior of an actual aircraft display (e.g., a VSI reading of 500 fpm must
reflect a corresponding movement in altimeter, and an
increase in power must reflect an increase in rpm
indication or power indicator).
Yes
8.e Flight Dynamics
(1) Flight dynamics of the ATD should be comparable to the way the represented training aircraft performs and
handles. However, there is no requirement for an ATD to
have control loading to exactly replicate any particular
aircraft. An air data-handling package is not required for
determination of forces to simulate during the
manufacturing process.
Yes “TouchTrainer” provides an accurate representation of the aircraft flight characteristics for basic and instrument training.
(2) Aircraft performance parameters (such as maximum speed, cruise speed, stall speed, maximum climb rate, hovering/sideward/forward/rearward flight) should be
comparable to the aircraft or family of aircraft being
represented.
Yes
(3) Aircraft vertical lift component must change as a
function of bank, comparable to the way the aircraft or
Yes
Qualification and Approval Guide (QAG) for the FlyThisSim Touch Trainer V2.82
FlyThisSim Compliance Table for the FTS TouchTrainer Page 27
family of aircraft being represented performs and handles.
(4) Changes in flap setting, slat setting, gear position,
collective control or cyclic control must be accompanied
by changes in flight dynamics, comparable to the way the
aircraft or family of aircraft represented performs and handles.
Yes
(5) The presence and intensity of wind and turbulence
must be reflected in the handling and performance
qualities of the simulated aircraft and should be comparable to the way the aircraft or family of aircraft represented performs and handles.

and ready for the performance of a particular procedural
task, the instructor must be able to manipulate the following system parameters independently of the
simulation:
• Aircraft geographic location,
• Aircraft heading,
• Aircraft airspeed,
• Aircraft altitude, and • Wind direction, speed, and turbulence.
Yes
(3) The system must be capable of recording both a
horizontal and vertical track of aircraft movement for later
playback and review.
Yes
(4) The instructor must be able to disable any of the
instruments prior to or during a training session, and be
able to simulate failure of any of the instruments without
stopping or freezing the simulation to affect the failure.
Yes
(5) The ATD must have at least a navigational area
database that is local to the training facility to allow
reinforcement of procedures learned during actual flight in
that area. All navigational data must be based on
procedures as published per 14 CFR part 97.
Yes
