W e are pleased to
provide the
Quinnipiac Uni-
versity Chapter of the Ameri-
can College of Healthcare
Executives (ACHE) Academic
Year Report. 2015-2016 was
a very successful and active
year for our student organiza-
tion. The students participat-
ed in a wide range of events
described in this report.
They also delivered a number
of excellent projects through
their coursework and onsite
placements.
2015-2016 also saw our stu-
dents engaged in a series of
interdisciplinary pursuits.
Kurt Barwis, President/CEO
Bristol Hospital, served as
mentor to a multidisciplinary
student team. This team re-
cently received notification of
their upcoming publication in
ACHE’s Journal of Health Care
Management.
Our interdisciplinary focus
also continued through a
speaker series with MD, DNP,
MBA-HCM, & MSOL students
joining us to hear a diverse
group of individuals in the
healthcare industry-including
Dr. Peter Bowers, Chief Medi-
cal Director, Anthem, Inc. and
James Iacobellis, Senior Vice
President, Government &
Regulatory Affairs, CHA.
This year we also continued
efforts to engage the commu-
nity in our internship pro-
gram. Qualidigm® responded
to a need to create meaning-
ful experiences for future
healthcare leaders. Four QU
interns are placed at Qua-
lidigm® this year in their well-
structured internship pro-
gram. The VA Healthcare
System and Middlesex Hospi-
tal, among others, are also
mentoring interns.
You also responded to our
call to engage our online
learners in QU-ACHE. Kurt
Barwis and Steve Merz visited
our studios and taped a seg-
ment on the benefits of join-
ing ACHE. This well-done
effort is posted to all our
healthcare management

CT-AHE Executives Visit Quinnipiac
Kurt Barwis, CEO of Bristol Hospital and Steve Merz, Vice Presi-dent of Behavior Health at Yale-New Haven came to Quinnipiac University studios to tape an introduction to ACHE and the benefits of joining as a stu-dent. QU's MBA-Healthcare Manage-ment track is delivered online. This video is posted to all healthcare management courses and is an important step in reaching the online graduate-student market.

The “Business” of Healthcare Event
Quinnipiac University, career de-
velopment office, held a panel
with seven professionals from a
wide-range of healthcare organi-
zations to discuss their career
paths and respond to students’
questions about entering the job
market. Sharon Porter, Bristol-
Myers Squibb, Olivia Thergood,
LectureLinx, Mostafa Elhagger
Johnson & Johnson, Vanessa
Rubano, Boehringer Ingelheim,
Paul Barclay, Pfizer, Jessica Gould,
Z-Medical, and Krysta Fraise Pro-
Health Physicians joined together
to discuss preparation, interview-
ing, and skill-building processes for
finding and landing a job in the
healthcare industry. QU-ACHE
attended this informative event,
along side other students, who
were interested in hearing about
the “business” of healthcare. This
intimate setting gave the QU-
ACHE members, as well as other
captivated students, the oppor-
tunity to get firsthand answers to
career-related questions.
The panelists provided strategic approaches for use during the job and internship search. Sever-al panelists were Quinnipiac alum and shared advice on how to employ the school alumni net-
work to make connections. Tenac-ity was highlighted as key to a suc-cessful job search.

So, You Want a Healthcare Management Internship? What Should I Do?
QU-ACHE collaborated with the School of
Business’s Career Development Depart-
ment on a career seminar. This event,
held March 2016, focused on successfully
beginning your career in healthcare man-
agement through an internship. In this
session, Jill Ferrall, associate dean career
development, walked through a compre-
hensive job search strategy: how to build
a resume, how to approach the interview
process, and the importance of network-
ing.
Professor Angela Mattie reviewed the
healthcare management field and pre-
sented specific internship opportunities in
healthcare. She stressed the importance
of gaining specific healthcare knowledge
through a healthcare management spe-
cific internship. Mattie said: “...given the
complex challenges of the field, it is im-
portant that students gain valuable do-
main knowledge and this should occur
through studies, but more importantly
through a healthcare management spe-
cific internship.” Students left energized
and prepared to begin their summer in-
ternship job search.
This summer, ACHE students have been
accepted into internships with organiza-
tions which include: Qualidigm®, Middle-
sex Hospital and VA Connecticut Health
Care System.
QU-ACHE Hosts: “Career Speed Networking”
Quinnipiac University’s Chapter of the
American College of Healthcare Execu-
tives brought current students, alumni,
and industry professionals together this
past December. The event was informal-
ly referred to as “Career Speed Dating”
giving students the opportunity to inter-
act with others focusing on gathering
advice about internship opportunities
and post-graduate careers. Students
engaged in discussion with table facilita-
tors who were current students, Quin-
nipiac alum and healthcare management
fellows throughout CT. Students gained
knowledge from professionals concern-
ing the job search and life in the
healthcare management industry.
Held at Quinnipiac University’s Rocky
Top Campus, the event began with a
networking session. The club’s faculty
advisor made introductory remarks, in-
troducing the planning committee and
event facilitators. The main event fol-
lowed with a lively discussions.
The speakers and facilitators in attend-
ance were one past and one current
fellow James Dia-
mond, Hartford
Healthcare and
Tiffany Fernandez,
St. Mary’s Hospital.
There were 5 Quin-
nipiac MBA-HCM
alum: Katie
Lasewicz, Marta
Czeropska, Paul
Krsiak, Rick Coppo-
la, and Jennifer
Meyers. Quinnipiac University students
who spoke about their internships in-
cluded Spencer Hess, Nathaniel Moore,
Jim Falco and Erika Edlund. Everyone
enjoyed the high-energy, informative
evening.

CTAHE’s 5th Annual East Coast Fellowship Event
Fellowships and early career opportunities were the focus of CTAHE’s 5th Annual East Coast Fellowship Event. Stu-dents and healthcare profes-sionals came together in April. A number of QU-ACHE mem-bers volunteered for the occa-sion.
The Yale New Haven Health System Institute for Excellence sponsored the event where guests heard of Marna Borgstrom’s career path to President and CEO. She shared her successful career journey with the inquisitive crowd, which started with simply fold-
ing shirts at Macy’s to her tran-sition into healthcare as a fel-low. She stressed taking every presented opportunity, even if it might not immediately jumpstart your ultimate career choice. Ms. Borgstrom also stated how important it is to respect all levels of work place structure; reflecting on her days as a hospital unit secre-tary where she came to under-stand how nurses and staff members throughout healthcare work behind the scenes to make success attain-able.
After Borgstrom finished shar-
ing her career journey, she answered several questions from the audience. Later, the fellows and young profession-als gathered for the speed net-working feature of the event. Tables lined the room where students were able to freely network and learn about fel-lowship opportunities. The night started many connec-tions between students, fel-lows, and healthcare profes-sionals.
Marna Borgstrom’s story serves as an inspiration to the future generation of healthcare leaders.
QU-ACHE Events
Qualidigm®, a national healthcare consulting and re-search organization based in Wethersfield Connecticut, designed a formal internship program. After a successful placement with Quinnipiac ACHE member and MBA stu-dent- Erika Edlund, Tim Elwell, CEO of the company and his executive team established a formal internship program beginning with an onsite group interview.
The event consisted of an overview of such departments as consulting, compliance, business development, mar-keting, finance, and admin-istration. Several Quinnipiac students attended the event and learned details about the healthcare management in-dustry.
Four QU students accepted internship opportunities at Qualidigm® this summer. Each
student is assigned a senior-level mentor and given chal-lenging assignments. Weekly intern meetings are held and according to weekly status reports: the students are learning a significant amount.
Qualidigm® has provided an excellent example of assisting young professionals in estab-lishing their career. We look forward to working with other organizations in the future.

Inter-professional and Service Day Learning
Our School of Business, School of Medicine and our Organizational Leadership students participated in an Inter-professional and Service Learning Day during the spring semester. This high energy event gave students an opportunity to showcase their course projects.
One such project, Kurt Bar-wis, President/ CEO of Bristol Hospital served as a project mentor. The result of this
work was recently accepted for publication in the ACHE’s Journal of Healthcare Man-agement. In this retrospective case study, the team exam-ined how Bristol Hospital’s Emergency Care Center was successfully turned around through a shared governance model.
Francis Kissi, the president of QUACHE also served as a mentor to one of the MBA student groups. This team
examined cities across the country as QU strategically looks at building a nationwide clinical education partner-ships.
