HOUSTON – Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) is proudly producing a Texas origi-nal musical, The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas, running June 5 – 17 at the Hobby Center for The Performing Arts.

It’s all big songs and big hair in this sassy, spirited musical about a real-life brothel in Texas. Based on the “Chicken Ranch”, the infamous, long-running house of ill repute, this tongue-in-cheek story chronicles Miss Mona Stangley, a classy yet brassy madam with a heart of gold, as her “business” becomes the center of a media controversy. Thrusting the Chicken Ranch into the spotlight is Melvin P. Thorpe, a loud-mouthed reporter based on Houston’s own late Marvin Zindler. Spicing up the story line is a hot-headed, trigger-happy town sheriff, the Texas A&M football team, and Miss Mona’s risqué girls. The Best Little Whorehouse In Texaswill be a feisty, fun-filled treat that includes favorites such as “A Lil' Ole Bitty Pissant Country Place” and “Hard Candy Christmas”.

HOUSTON – The 2012 Tommy Tune Awards winners have been announced! To a crowd of more than 2,500 people, Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) declared the winners of TUTS’ tenth annual Tommy Tune Awards on the eve-ning of Tuesday, April 17, at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. Adding extra excitement to the evening, the award ceremony’s namesake and nine-time Tony Award winner Tommy Tune made a special appearance to kick off the show and to present the night’s top honor.

“To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Tommy Tune Awards is an achievement that makes me and the entire TUTS team very proud. Our city is filled with young performers, and we’re glad we can provide a spotlight for the next generation of musical theatre talent,” said John Breckenridge, TUTS President and CEO.

Developed by TUTS, the Tommy Tune Awards honor musical theatre excellence at the high school level. After reviewing and evaluating the 44 participating Houston-area high school pro-ductions during the 2011-12 school year, a team of 32 Houston-based theatre professionals made 154 nominations in 15 categories. The winners are as follows:

• Best Leading Actor – Billy Cohen as Freddy Benson in Episcopal High School’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

In addition to the Tony-awards-style cer-emony, the evening featured many notewor-thy performances. Tommy Tune kicked off the show with Seesaw’s “It’s Not Where You Start,” Tune’s first Tony Award-winning number, with the all the nominees for Best Leading Actor and Actress as well as Best Supporting Actor and Actress. Other memorable acts includ-ed performances from nominees in the Best Musical category, a musical medley with this year’s Best Leading Actor and Best Leading Actress nominees, and a grand finale includ-ing two students from each participating school.

Co-hosts for the award ceremony include Jim Bernhard and Ayana Mack. Bernhard has written several original productions that have debuted at TUTS and authored the theatrical history Stars in Your Eyes. Mack is a well-known local radio personality. To commemorate a decade of the awards program, Stephanie Gibson, the first ever Tommy Tune Award win-ner for Best Actress, presented the Best Leading Actor and Best Leading Actress awards. Since winning the award in 2003, Gibson has gone on to play in the national tour of A Chorus Line and Happy Days and covered a major role in Spamalot and The Addams Family on Broadway.

Among the other notable presenters were TUTS’ Board Chairman Steve Burkett, Ernie Manouse of PBS, St. John Flynn of NPR’s The Front Row, Don Nelson of ABC 13, Stanton Welch of the Houston Ballet, Paul Hope from the Alley Theatre, and Humphreys School of Musical Theatre graduate and cast member from “Smash” Manuel Santos.

TUTS’ Tommy Tune Awards are designed not only to acknowledge remarkable musical theatre talent at the high school level, but also to encour-age future development. TUTS presented ten scholarships to outstanding participating stu-dents of the Tommy Tune Awards including the

Ruth Denney Scholarship, named in honor of Tune’s mentor and legendary Lamar High School drama teacher. Students under consideration were required to meet specific criteria set out by the Scholarship Committee, as well as submit an application and essay. The winners include Alma Acosta (Elsik High School), Monica Brown (Kingwood High School), Kate Court (Pearland High School), Elisabeth Del Toro (Friendswood High School), Nathaly Garcia (Elsik High School), Haylee Hoelscher (Houston Christian High School), Jeremiah James (Cypress Ranch High School), Shelby Stark (Klein High School), and Eleonore Verkerk (Stafford High School). The prestigious Ruth Denny Award, which carries an increased stipend, was pre-sented to Billy Cohen of Episcopal High School.

As Best Leading Actor and Actress, Cohen and Finnie will go on to compete at the national level for the Jimmy Award at the National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City. Established in 2009, the Jimmy Awards are named after Broadway theater owner and producer, James M. Nederlander. This year, the program will bring the country’s best high school performers together to compete on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre on Monday, June 25, 2012.

Theatre Under The Stars will cover all expenses for Cohen and Finnie to represent TUTS in this week-long national event. While in New York, Jimmy Award participants will have the opportunity to participate in rehearsals and master classes; receive one-on-one coaching from theater professionals; be seen by cast-ing agents; meet and converse with Broadway actors; and compete for scholarships and other prizes. The week’s events will culminate in a live awards show where the Jimmy Award for Best Performance by an Actor and Best Performance by an Actress will be presented.

The Theatre Under The Stars Tommy Tune Awards are named for Houston native and Lamar High School alumnus, Tommy Tune. A performer, director, and choreographer with more than 50 years of stage experience, Tune

received nine Tony Awards for his work in the following productions: Seesaw, My One and Only, A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine, Nine, Grand Hotel, and The Will Rogers Follies. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2003 by President Bush.

William Levy: A practicar el “Rock”No se imaginaba William Levy que su talón de Aquiles

en el baile era el “Rock nʼroll”, ritmo que no conocía cuan-do llegó a Estados Unidos a los 15 años de su Cuba natal y donde por el veto a la música “del norte”, no se escuchaba.

Como consecuencia de su desconocimiento de “rock”, es obvio que no sentía el ritmo y perdió ese segundo lugar que llevaba en el programa “Dancing With The Stars” después que pareció un poco patitieso en medio de la pista de baile y hasta tropezó con el pie de su pareja, haciéndole perder el zapato.

“Debes mantenerte enfocado”, le aconsejaron los jue-ces al carismático actor cubanoamericano que a pesar de sus tropiezos logró que no lo sacaran del concurso aunque, eso sí, prometió ensayar con más rigurosidad para los próximos episodios del programa, lunes y martes a las 8 p.m. por la cadena ABC.

Seguro que hay muchas voluntarias para darle clases al guapísimo actor, con mirada de ángel y sonrisa de ca-ramelo.

Today, although she is over $25,000 in debt as a result of self financing the school, she continues to dedicated her life to hel-ping children through dance and has become a mother figure and mentor to the hundreds of youth she has worked with throughout the years. Many of her students have gone on to become professional dancers, traveling the world and supporting their families through dance. Being discovered by Marc An-thony for ¡QʼViva! The Chosen has been a dream come true for the dancers from El Balcón de los Artistas, and they are hopeful that the show will open many doors and allow them to gain international recognition.

El Secretario General de la OMI, Koji Sekimizu, emitió un mensaje de vídeo el día del aniversario

del hundimiento del Titanic, recordando a todos aquellos que perdieron la vida en el trágico accidente; al mismo tiempo hizo hincapié en las mejoras de la seguridad de los buques de pasajeros reconociendo la necesidad de mejorar continuamente la seguridad en el mar.

El texto del mensaje es: “Hace cien años, el 14 de abril, el Titanic chocó con-

tra un iceberg, mientras realizaba su viaje inaugural entre Europa y los Estados Unidos. A las pocas horas, más de 1.500 personas habían perecido en las aguas heladas del Atlántico Norte. El resultado fue la transformación de lo que entonces era el barco más famoso del mundo en un nombre asociado para siempre con el desastre”.

“El desastre del Titanic obligó a las naciones ma-rítimas más importantes del mundo del momento, a tomar medidas decisivas para hacer frente a la seguridad marítima. Esto condujo a la adopción de la primera con-vención internacional sobre la seguridad de la vida en el mar, el Convenio SOLAS, en 1914”.

“La Organización Marítima Internacional tiene sus raíces en la catástrofe del Titanic. En consecuencia, se hizo evidente la necesidad de una normativa internacio-nal que garantizase la supervisión de la seguridad maríti-ma y este sigue siendo el objetivo central de la OMI”.

“Hoy en día, en 2012, aunque mucho más actualizado y revisado, el Convenio SOLAS sigue siendo el instrumen-to internacional más importante que se ocupa de la segu-ridad marítima. En la actualidad forma parte de un marco normativo amplio que abarca casi todos los aspectos del diseño de buques, construcción, operación y dotación. El espíritu y la determinación de todos los que han trabajado para crear este marco se debe reconocer y acreditar”.

“Hoy en día, en el 100 º aniversario de ese desastre, vamos a re-cordar a quienes perdieron la vida en las heladas aguas del Atlántico Norte en esa fatídica noche del 14 de abril de 1912 y a reflexionar sobre los peligros y riesgos asociados con los viajes en el mar”.

“Insto a los gobiernos miembros, la OMI y la industria naviera en su conjunto, a renovar nuestra determinación de mejorar y aumentar la seguridad de los buques de pasajeros, y en el futuro.”

El RMS Titanic (en inglés: Royal Mail Steamship Titanic, “Buque

de vapor del Correo Real Titanic”) era el segundo de un trío de tran-satlánticos conocidos como Clase Olympic. El Titanic fue el barco de pasajeros más grande y lujoso de la época, seguido por el RMS Olym-pic. El 10 de abril de 1912, el Titanic inició su viaje inaugural partiendo desde Southampton (Inglaterra) con destino a Nueva York. Cuatro días más tarde, a las 23:40 del 14 de abril, el Titanic chocó con un iceberg al sur de las costas deTerranova, y se hundió a las 2:20 de la mañana del 15 de abril. El siniestro se saldó con la muerte de 1.517 personas y se convirtió en uno de los peores desastres marítimos en tiempo de paz de la historia.

Fue construido en los astilleros

La famosa y excepcional historia del Titanic

de Harland and Wolff, en Belfast (Irlanda del Norte). Partió hacia Nueva York con 2.227 personas a bordo, y una de las causas del elevado número de víctimas fue que, a pesar de cumplir con todas las normativas marítimas de la época, el barco sólo llevaba botes salvavidas para 1.178 personas, y aun así sólo se salvaron 705. Un ele-vado número de hombres murió debido al protocolo de salvamento que se siguió en el proceso de evacuación de la nave, conocido como “mujeres y niños primero”.

El Titanic se diseñó usando algunas de las más avanzadas tecnologías disponibles en aquel tiempo, tales como mamparos herméticos que dividían el casco en 17 secciones independientes y que se creía que podían man-tenerlo a flote en caso de rotura de una parte del casco; iba dotado de telegrafía, un nuevo diseño de hélice de tres palas y las instalaciones de primera clase no tenían comparación con otros buques en cuanto a lujo se re-fiere. Todo ello hizo que el Titanic fuera considerado “insumergible”.

Todo esto tuvo comienzo en una cena realizada en una mansión de Londres en el año 1907 en la que J. Bruce Ismay, quien era director gerente de la compañía naviera White Star Line y Lord James Pirrie planearon construir 3 enormes barcos que serían desde entonces refencia de lujo y elegancia.

Esta construcción fue llevada a cabo por la White Star Line, con dinero de la I.M.M (International Mer-

cantil Marine), que puso en mar-cha la construcción de la llamada “ clase Olympic” que estaría formada por 3 navíos, “OLYMPIC”, “TI-TANIC” y “GIGANTIC”, pero tras la tragedia del Ti-tanic, este último se llamo “ BRITANNIC”. Estos barcos conseguirían la anhelada su-premacía en las rutas transat-lánticas.

El diseño original de las naves era de tres chimeneas, pero Pirrie pensó que cuatro les daría un mejor aspecto y, sobre todo, los pasajeros pensarían que los barcos serian más rápidos en su cruce por el Atlántico gracias a esa cuarta chimenea y el diseño se cambio para acomodarla. Algunos de los planos iniciales eran simples, otros muy elaborados.

La primera clase, por ejemplo, tenía un gran salón, una sala de fumadores, un cuarto grande de re-cepción, dos salones privados y un salón de lectura. El comedor tendría que ser enorme con una altura de tres cubiertas y, en lo alto, una inmensa cúpula de vidrio.

Más abajo estaba el baño turco, la piscina y un gimnasio. Even-tualmente, muchos de estos dise-ños fueron reducidos o borrados por completo mientras otros eran au-mentados o mejorados. El gimnasio, por ejemplo, en lugar de estar varias cubiertas abajo se colocó en la cu-bierta principal. El Spa fue reducido y se colocaron dos ascensores más, teniendo un total de tres para la pri-mera clase y uno extra para los pasa-jeros de segunda. La primera sección del casco del Olympic fue colocada el 16 de diciembre de 1908 y tres meses más tarde se colocó la prime-ra parte del Titanic, el 31 de marzo de 1909.

El Titanic ha causa-do gran conmoción

la gente se ha interesado a un mas es por el filme de la película Titanic de 1997, la cual fue escrita, producida y dirigida por Ja-mes Cameron, en la cual los personajes prin-cipales y la historia de amor son ficticios, pero muchos de los personajes secundarios (como los miembros de la tripulación y al-gunos de los pasajeros de primera y segunda clase) están basados en personajes históricos reales, así como las tomas del verdadero Titanic hundido en fondo del Atlántico que abren la película.

La película tuvo un gran éxito de crí-tica y público, ganando 11 Premios Óscar, incluyendo Mejor Película, y convirtiéndose en la película más taquillera de todos los tiempos para aquella época, con una recau-dación mundial de más de $1,800 millones de dólares.

Por si fuera poco, se ha anunciado re-cientemente que James Cameron realizará una versión de Titanic en formato 3D y el director planea estrenar el film en 2012. Esta fecha la consideró, más que nada porque la película tendrá que convertirse, del formato tradicional al 3D y este proceso debe reali-zarse muy bien y correctamente, y ésto lleva mucho tiempo, subrayó Cameron. De esta manera, si la película se estrenara en dicho año, curiosamente se cumplirían 100 años desde el naufragio del gigantesco transatlán-tico RMS Titanic.

El 1 de septiembre de 1985, el inves-tigador Robert Ballard y su equipo

ubicaron los restos sumergidos del Ti-tanic a 4.000 metros de la superficie, provocando gran expectativa mundial. Se utilizó el equipo sumergible ARGO que iba provisto de cámaras sensibles a la oscuridad.

Una vez explorado preliminar-mente se descubrió que el Titanic no estaba entero, sino que estaba partido en dos, lo que sugirió que se partió al momento de hundirse: curiosamente, prácticamente nin-gún superviviente a excepción del joven Jack Thayer recuerda este su-

El descubrimiento de los restos del navío en 1985 por el equipo liderado por Robert Ballard y Jean-Louis Michel han devuelto al Titanic a la actualidad, realizándose numerosas exposiciones de objetos rescatados del pecio y aparecien-do numerosas sociedades históricas y culturales que difunden e investigan todo lo relacionado al mítico transatlántico.

Para preparar la salsa de pepi-tas, combina todos los ingredien-tes en una licuadora y deja aparte.

En un tazón grande, bate los huevos bien y agrega el tomate y jalapeño. Rocía una sartén gran-de antiadherente con spray antia-dherente y calienta sobre fuego medio. Agrega la mezcla de hue-vo y cocina, revolviendo con una espátula de silicón, hasta el tér-mino deseado y retira del fuego.

Envuelve las tortillas en papel toalla húmedo y calienta 20 se-gundos en el microondas. Divi-de los huevos revueltos entre las tortillas y cubre con 2 cdas. de fri-joles, 2 cdas. de queso mozzare-lla y 1 cda. de la salsa de pepitas.Para elaborar el burrito, dobla el lado derecho e izquierdo de la tor-tilla y enrolla de abajo para arriba.

Calienta la misma sartén so-bre fuego medio alto y pon a tostar los burritos con la parte sellada hacia abajo. Tuesta 1-2 minutos por lado para dorar.Para servir, corta cada burrito en diagonal y rocía con mas de la salsa por encima y decora con algunas pepitas tostadas.

Washington left-hander Gio Gonzalez, facing the Astros for the first time in his career, pitched seven scoreless innings to negate a terrific effort from Wan-dy Rodriguez as Houston was shut out for the first time this season, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Nationals Park.

Rodriguez was nearly as good as Gonzalez, allowing five hits, one run and no walks in seven innings to fall to 0-2 despite a 1.96 ERA in his first three starts. The Astros made four errors in each of his first two starts, and while they werenʼt changed with an error on Tuesday, the miscommunication between Martinez and Lowrie was costly.

Rodriguez got two quick outs to start the fourth before Jayson Werth sent a fly ball to center field that a sliding Justin Maxwell near-ly caught. Werth wound up with a double. LaRoche followed with a popup to the left side that fell bet-ween Martinez and Lowrie, who backed off the play at the last ins-tant with Martinez charging hard.

“It s̓ a play that s̓ got to be made,” Lowrie said. “First time a play like that, a popup like that, has happened with J.D. and I in the outfield, and our communication wasnʼt good, and we talked about it, and it wonʼt happen again.”

Martinez initially took a step back before having to charge in toward the infield.

“I took a drop step and I didnʼt see it,” he said. “I saw it come off the bat, and when I looked up I saw it again and I took off. I didnʼt really have a beat on it. I saw that Jed was going [in], and I thought he was go-ing to keep going, but I guess he heard me coming.”

The Astros had a chance in the ninth when Lowrie doubled and Martinez drew a four-pitch walk against Brad Lidge. But the former Astros closer came back to retire Carlos Lee, Chris Johnson and Travis Buck in order for the save, giving the Nationals a 9-3 record.

Houston was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring posi-tion, and is 2-for-29 with RISP during its three-game losing streak.

“We talked to a few guys about that today,” Astros manager Brad Mills said. “I donʼt like the word relax, but just feel a little bit more confident with themselves knowing theyʼve got the upper hand, not the pitcher, in those situations.”

Rodriguez pitched ahead in the count and matched the quick tempo set by Gonzalez, which was the main reason the game was played in a tidy two hours, 12 minutes. Rodriguez has given up 17 hits, four earned runs and walked only three in 18 1/3 innings this year.

“That s̓ the guy that we all know, and we all love to have him pitch like that,” Mills said.

Gonzalez, acquired in an offseason trade with the A̓ s, allowed two batters to reach in the first inning, on a leadoff single by Maxwell and a two-out walk to Martinez, before sending down 13 batters in a row

and 19 of the final 21 batters he faced.

“He was great,” Nationals ma-nager Davey Johnson said. “I was going to hold him around 100 [pitches] this early in the season. If a guy pitches in that kind of ballga-me, I donʼt give him an opportunity to lose it. He had a great changeup, good fastball, outstanding curve. He was tough on left-handers, and he made it look easy.”

The Astros did have one of the best defensive plays youʼll ever see when Lowrie made a diving stop up the middle on a ball off the bat of Ryan Zimmerman in the first inning and flipped to second baseman Jose Altuve, who made a one-handed catch and throw in one motion for a double play.

“Iʼve been looking forward to making a play like that with him,” Lowrie said. “He s̓ been real im-pressive. It was exciting. It was one of the highlights of the night from a game we felt like we stuck in there. We played really good defense, a couple of bloops, they scored a run, and we had a chance in the ninth. Lidge just made some good pitches.”

Eventually a shot was going to go in for Will Bruin, but that has

not made the wait to open his 2012 account any easier.

After three games and five weeks it seemed like the second year forward had found everything but the back of the net. Things changed Sunday night as “The Dancing Bear” hit a well placed shot to beat Chicago Fire goa-lkeeper Sean Johnson to the near post in the 24th minute, accounting for Houston s̓ lone tally in the lightning-shortened 1-1 draw.

Entering the night with nine shots – six on goal – and no goals, it was a relief for the second-year forward to finally see one cross the goal line.

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. –The under-manned Houston Dynamo pla-

yed to a 65-minute, 1-1 tie against the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park on Sunday in a game that included a 70-minute delay and was ended early because of lightning.

Will Bruin and Logan Pause tra-ded goals midway through the first half, then the teams slugged it out for 40 more minutes before the skies opened and officials were forced the cancel the match.

The Dynamo played without three midfield starters, including 2011 MVP candidate Brad Davis, but they were able to escape their fourth-straight road contest – and their first game since March 23 – with a point.

Fire forward Dominic Oduro had the first chance of rain-soaked evening when he was sprung free on the left side of the penalty area by Patrick Nyarko. Oduro tried to chip Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall, but Hall was able to easily corral the shot.

The Fire went on to recover several Houston turnovers on the slippery field before referee Geoff Gamble called a halt to the game because of a bolt of lightning and the peal of thunder in the 13th minute. The game was halted for 70 minutes before it resumed.

The first scoring chance after the intermission came off the foot of Sebastian Grazzini, who curled a shot from 25 yards to the upper corner, but Hall was able to make a flying fingertip save.

Minutes later, the Dynamo broke through. Brian Ching peeled off the backline and sprung Bruin on a through pass that split center backs Jalil Anibaba and Arne Friedrich. Bruin coolly beat Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson to put the Dynamo on the board in the 24th minute.

The Dynamo goal was Houston s̓ only shot on target in the first half.

FULL LINEUPS AND BOXSCOREJust three minutes later, the Fire lucked into an

equalizer. After Nyarko was taken down at the top of the box, a Pavel Pardo direct kick deflected off of the back of Pause, curled over Hall, hit the underside of the cross bar and found the back of the net. The goal was Pause s̓ first since May 8, 2010.

After 20 minutes of back and forth action in the se-cond half, which included no shots on target, another bolt of lightning was sighted and Gamble pulled the players off the field. All parties (League Office, Referees, Home Team, Visiting Team and Stadium Officials) agreed to make the game official.

The Fire (1-1-2) have yet to register a multi-goal game through four contests in 2011. That streak conti-nued on Sunday despite some lively play from Grazzini and Nyarko. The Fire will try to register their first win since beating Philly 1-0 on March 23 this Saturday at Toronto.

The Dynamo (2-1-1) have lost only one game in their first four while they wait for the completion of BBVA Compass Stadium. Theyʼll head to Columbus in the next stop on their seven-game road trip.

Entering the season much of the talk out of Houston Dynamo camp was about the strides Bruin was making as an overall player. His play and ability to get into good positions – evidenced by the well-crafted run he made to beat Chicago s̓ backline on the goal – were living up to the hype through the early going.

But his misfortunes in front of goal had minimized the impact of much of that good off the ball play.

“The longer you go without getting goals the more frus-trated you become in yourself and the harder it gets,” said Brian Ching, who set Bruin s̓ goal up with a perfectly weig-hted through ball. “I think it s̓ extremely important for a striker to get that first one. I was extremely happy for him. You could tell with the look on his face how much it meant.”

“I always put pressure on myself because, playing up top, I expect to score and I expect to put away my chances,” said Bruin, whose tally came 10 minutes after the game had been resumed following a 70-minute weather delay. “I was hoping to get one before the break, but unfortunately I didn t̓. I wanted to get one started off immediately when we started back up tonight and thank God for that good touch from Brian. Now hopefully more will come.”

fense, is confident the Texans will be able to overcome those departures in 2012.

“Obviously, it s̓ tough,” Watt said on Thursday in an interview with Texans TV. “It s̓ part of the bu-

siness, losing players, but I think we have a great football team. We have a lot of great players that are going to step up in their place, and if you looked at our team last year, we had a lot of success with Coach [Wade] Phillips. What have they said to you about your role here?

“Just come in the other spot and play and help Cush [Brian Cushing}, help the defense as much as possible and do what I usually do and just make some plays and have fun.”

This Texans defense ranked No. 2 in the league last season. You already tweeted about the “#Bull-sOnParade” – what do you think about being a part of this group?

“It s̓ a lot of high-motor guys that s̓ on this defense, and you can tell theyʼre very self-motivated. The cohesion is here, and these guys get after it. Just watching film and being in Texas, we got a chance to keep

up with each other. Having that 3-4 experience, you just keep up with other [teams] who s̓ playing the 3-4 and see if we can steal something, because it s̓ a copy-cat league. They just stuck out all the time. Cush played well. [Da-nieal] Manning played well. Antonio Smith played well. All these guys. J.J. [Watt] is just – he has a high motor. The two outside ʻbackers [Connor Barwin and Brooks Reed]. Coming from Dallas, we had D-Ware [DeMarcus Ware] and [Anthony] Spencer. We have two outside ʻbackers that are just relentless. This whole defense, if you donʼt do what youʼre supposed to do and if youʼre not flying around, you will stick out like a sore thumb.”

Being from Monroe, La., and having played at LSU, how nice is it to be a little bit closer to home now?

“It s̓ good. Iʼve been fortunate and blessed to be one state over – been in Texas my whole career right next to Louisiana, so it s̓ awesome, man. I canʼt even describe it, but Iʼm just looking forward to getting in here and getting in the trenches with everybody and having fun.”

Rockets Drop Heartbreaker To Denver

HOUSTON - The Rockets played with the sort of passionate desperation that had been so sorely

lacking from their effort the past few games. They com-peted as if their playoff lives depended on the outcome, scrambling and diving for every loose ball right from the opening tip. Players stepped up, made big shots, left everything they had on the floor and undoubtedly adhe-red to every other sports cliche that s̓ used to describe the all-out performance of athletes in pressure-packed situations.

But while the effort was there, the desired end result remained elusive to Houston yet again. Denver outlasted the Rockets 105-102 in front of a packed, playoff-caliber crowd at Toyota Center Monday night, sweeping the two teams ̓pivotal home-and-home series, while sending the Rockets to their fourth consecutive loss.

It was the sort of heartbreaking defeat that hurts on multiple fronts: the sting from the game itself and its potential postseason ramifications first and foremost; but also because it served as a bitter reminder of the opportu-nity wasted last week when the team was unable to take advantage of the cushion earned from its 4-0 road trip.

“I would feel somehow well if we would have played this type of game against Utah after the really good trip that we had, so that you get home with the feeling that, ʻOK, we lost, but weʼre going to win games if we play this way,ʼ” said Luis Scola immediately after the game. “But right now it s̓ difficult because we just blew away our margin for error and the season is now four games shorter. Right now playing well and being close is not enough.

“Weʼre still there, it s̓ just painful because we lost four games in a row against teams who are right there

behind or in front of us. It really hurts because we could have been clin-ching the playoffs right now today. Instead we are just seeing what s̓ go-ing to happen ... to see if weʼre going to get in the playoffs or not.”

But bleak as Houston s̓ postsea-son prospects may appear on the he-llacious heels of a four-game losing skid that has seen the club drop out of the Western Conference s̓ top-8 for the time being (Phoenix, tied

with Houston at 32-29, currently owns the tiebreaker due to its superior conference record), the Rockets can draw at least a small degree of comfort from the fact that they still almost certainly control their own destiny. Making the playoffs may require running the table over the course of their final five games. Perhaps it will take a 4-1 mark, or maybe theyʼll receive some good fortune and “only” need to win three more from here on out.

Point being, as much as Monday s̓ contest had the fe-el of a do-or-die affair, the Rockets still have life despite losing, just as they would still have work to do if they had escaped with a win. And if any team should know how quickly fortunes can change in the NBA, it should be the Rockets who have been on a non-stop roller coas-ter ride through hot and cold spells all season long.

The biggest takeaway of all, however, is that this is how Houston must play the rest of the way. Whether shots are falling or rimming out, regardless of whether or not the calls are going their way, they can let nothing prevent them from playing with passion and pride for the full 48 minutes of each of their remaining five games. It wasnʼt enough to secure victory Monday in a hotly-con-tested game that could have gone either way. But it may still be enough to earn this club a playoff berth.

“We have five games left -- gotta go win some, sim-ple as that,” said Rockets Head Coach Kevin McHale. “Does it hurt? Yeah. We played hard tonight. The guys went out there and they busted it.
