What is Shokunin?
Pronounced “Sho-ku-neen”, most Japa-nese and Japanese-English dictionaries define it as ‘craftsman’ or ‘artisan’, but such a literal description does not fully express the deeper meaning. The Japa-nese apprentice is taught that shokunin means not only having the technical skills, but also implies an attitude and social consciousness. At Yamaha, it’s about creating an experience and guiding every musical from the first note through the realization of their highest potential.
Yamaha has selected a small number of dedicated retailers nationwide to be part-ners in the Shokunin Select Program. We will proudly debut the Shokunin collection of professional and artist qual-ity instruments at our Arlington Heights location in early May.

Twenty Seven Students participated in an on-line video contest in March spon-sored by QF and Haynes/Amadeus Flutes. The winners were selected by our Flute Advisory Board. The rule was sim-ple: submit your most creative flute vid-eo project. And, my, were they crea-tive!!
Our Middle School winner, Oliver Ta-
lukder was from Gemini MS in Niles, IL, who won a scholarship to the new MFA-Middle School Band Camp (see Page 15 “Get on the Bus”) and an ap-pearance by Haynes flute artist. Ben

The HS winner was Becky Song of Neuqua Valley HS who won a new Haynes Amadeus Flute!!
Shires Shop-Chicago is a boutique cus-tom brass shop located in our QF-

Now recognized as a leader in brass instrument design, innovation and manufacture, Shires maintains their commitment to every player who chooses Shires—to build an instrument that not only looks and sounds exactly the way you want it to, but is mechanically perfect, built to last for many years and beautiful to look at as well.
Shires Shop-Chicago features a wide selection of custom trombones and trum-pets produced in the shop outside Boston. Renowned instrument designer, Steve
Shires, meticulously builds instru-ments for the most discriminating profes-sional musicians in the world. “I Like My QF Rep because…”
The winners receive a custom made bobble head doll of their QF rep AND themselves! The contest has been fun, heart-warming, sincere, and highly entertaining. We have seen poems, stories, and videos of the wonderful relationships directors have with their QF school representatives. We hope you will take a moment to recognize your QF rep in April. We know they appreciate all you do for us.
Pictured are last year’s winner - Di-rector Steven Sanders (UIC College Prep) with his favorite QF rep - Rob-ert Scott. Check out Steven’s musical tribute on our FB page!

Food Trucks and
Bobbleheads…
By George Quinlan, Jr.
It’s always one of my favorite events of the year, the QF reception during the Midwest Clinic on Thursday evening. Right before the winter holidays, the timing is perfect to gather good friends together for some festivities during an active conference filled with profession-al development opportunities. Thank you to VanderCook College of Music for helping us host this event in their new building. This building, on the IIT campus, was originally constructed to repair locomotive train engines! Phase II (a performance venue) hasn’t begun yet, so the “garage” provided a unique opportunity for our reception—FOOD TRUCKS!!
We were “blown away” by your over-whelmingly favorable respons-es...particularly when the crowd cheered the trucks as they departed!! Also, speaking of being “blown away”, a spe-cial thanks to Luke Malewicz (QF Advi-
sory Board member) and the Heritage Quartet for providing music for the event before many headed
to “Reggies” to hear Bobby Mintzer
perform with QF-Vice President, Ken
Partyka.
For the last four years, April has marked the time for our annual “bobble-head contest”. Directors can recognize their

Our Flute advisory board supported a spe-cial project sponsored by Eastman Music Company/Haynes Flutes in March—an on-
line video contest. The board chose the video produced by Becky Song of Neuqua Valley HS as the winner of the Haynes Amadeus Flute. She is pictured below Ben
Smolen of the Pacific Symphony and Ste-ven Finley, Vice-President of Haynes. Most recently Ben’s flute was heard in the
soundtrack of the new Star Wars movie! On April 11th, Ben present-ed a clinic for the advi-sory board and promi-nent flute
teachers before head-ing to meet Becky to present her new flute! Much to her surprise, she also joined Ben performing “Star Wars” Music for the opening of the faculty meeting at her school with her new flute—
what poise and cour-
age for this young performer—she did a
great job!!
The next day, Ben Smolen traveled to Niles, IL to meet the MS winner, Oliver
Talukder. Ben presented a clinic for the Gemini MS flutes entitled “Hollywood Flute” (Ben has recorded for countless movie soundtracks) for Oliver and the flute section as director, Maia
Fridman (a flutist herself) beamed at how well her students did. A Pizza party sponsored by QF completed the day at Gemini MS...but not for Oliver! Oliver won s a scholarship to the Music For All Middle School Band Camp this summer for his efforts!!

The quotation "I don't care what the newspapers say about me as long as they spell my name right." is widely cited in journalism, public relations and advertising books where it is variously meant to reflect the importance of the media and the power of publicity. The expression has been attributed to many including Mae West, P.T. Barnum, W.C. Fields, George M. Cohan, and/or Will Rogers.
Suffice to say we were very pleased to be featured in an article entitled: Quinlan & Fabish: People Make the Difference in Musical Merchandise Review-
March 2016. Typically if our company is featured in a trade magazine the cover is a very conserva-tive photo of a Band or Orchestra Director work-ing with some students with a school rep standing behind them. A cover with Slash smoking a cig-
arette was a new one for
us!! Our art department went to work to customize the cover to fit our more conservative niche in the music products industry.
Thanks to Christian

District 122 Superintendent Julie Shell-berg was the recipient of the 2016 Illi-nois Music Educator's Association Out-standing Administrator Award! ILMEA presents this award annually to an ad-ministrator who is making a positive impact on music education in schools. Superintendent Shellberg accepted the award during the opening ceremony at the ILMEA Conference in January. This is a prestigious award that demonstrates the growth and strength of the music program. More importantly, the award illustrates the positive impact that a sup-portive district and community can make on a program that was reinstated just 3 years ago with directors Amber Feigel
Kenis & Marcus Hostetler.

cello New Arrivals!
In January, I met in Beijing with the owner of Eastman Strings Company, Qian Ni. Qian pays very close attention to the wood selection and making of the Nikolaus Bero “Chicago” Model cello which Eastman makes exclu-sively for Quin-lan and Fabish. It has been ten years of collaborative effort and the recent arri-vals are among the best yet. Qian buys wood from Russia specifically for this model cello. I am very proud to be able to offer a cello of European quality wood, made by the best makers at East-man, and is priced at $4545. These cel-los sell quickly. They are amazing!!

We have verbal commitment from an increased number of CSO players this year. But, they will be in rehearsal with Maestro Muti at our usual morning time. So, Rush Hour has arranged for the R&S Orchestra to meet for rehearsal at 1:00 and perform at 2:00 PM. This al-lows the CSO players to leave their re-hearsal in time to join our performance. Thank you City of Chicago and Rush Hour Concerts for making this adjust-ment! The Rise and Shine orchestra is part of a Rush Hour sponsored event called Make Music Chicago. Inspired by a long standing festival in Paris, Make Music Chicago is an event which begins at sunrise and ends after sunset where live music is performed free of charge at dozens of locations all over Chicagoland.
The Rise and Shine Orchestra is a testa-
ment of gratitude from the orchestral community of Chicago to the citizens of Chicago for providing an orchestral tradition of excellence from which we all benefit. We are powerful and we are strong! We give back to the or-chestral backbone we have been given. It’s a great day. All the charm of a county fair but you get to sit in an or-chestra with other devoted players of various talent and some of inspiring talent. One former R&S member moved to Boston and has started a sim-ilar tradition there. Cool! We are transformational.
HOW TO JOIN Rise and Shine: To join Rise and Shine Orchestra, go to makemusicchicago.org. Select the “play or sing along” button. Then se-lect Rise and Shine Orchestra. Please enroll through this site. It really helps Rush Hour organizers when working on details with the City of Chicago to have concrete numbers of participants to represent. By enrolling, not only do you get updated info about the concert including concert repertoire, but also, how to get copies of the music. The music performed will be standard POPS literature and we are planning on a full orchestra again this year. We are even working on doing something with Frank Lestina rehearsing Rise and
Shine Orchestra in 2014

West Suburban Home School Band ATTENTION HOME SCHOOLERS
Does your child already play a wind or percussion instru-ment? Have you had good intentions to add music to your curriculum? Perhaps you cannot afford private mu-sic lessons. A very inexpensive way to help your child learn and grow is to make the West Suburban Home School Band a part of their school week. Students make new friends, are accountable to someone other than mom or dad, and strive for their personal best as part of a wholesome, Christian group working towards a com-mon goal.
Membership has grown from 46 students/26 families in 2001, to nearly 200 students/90 families in 2015-2016. There are four band levels to accommodate those with no musical training whatsoever to those with advanced experience and abilities, students and parents alike. Membership includes students, age 7 to 18, as well as some college students, alumnae, parents and other adults.
