1: General Instructions

The Pressure Spy is designed for use with the R900® pitmeter interface unit (MIU). Before installing, thePressure Spy unit must be correctly wired to work withtheMIU.

2: Safety and Preliminary Checks

l Verify that you are at the location specified on thesite Work Order.

l Check that the site is safe for you and yourequipment.

l Confirm and/or update theMIU ID number on the SiteWork Order.

Follow any guidelines issued by yourcompany in addition to thosepresented in this guide. Never performan installation during a lightning stormor under excessively wet conditions.

3: Site Selection

Figure 1 and Figure 2 on the next page show the fullPressure Spy assembly.

R900 Pit MIUs

Neptune recommends placing the antennathrough a hole in the pit lid so that the domesits above it.

l Select a location with a direct line-of-sight to the pathof the water main valve.

l Avoid installing theMIU behindmetal fences or walls.l Prewire with a standard Nicor male connector asillustrated in Figure 3.

Neptune recommends use of R900MIUs prewired with Nicor femaleconnectors. Part numbers are shown inTable 1 on page 3.

If you currently have an R900MIU, splicethe wires together using the Sensus wiringprotocol as shown in Table 2.

4: Preparing the Pressure Spy Unit

After you have the Pressure Spy in the field, completethe following steps.

1. Swipe the Pressure Spy with a Neptunemagnetalong the top right of the unit.

The LED in the off position is shown in Figure 4 onthe next page. The light turns yellow (see Figure 5 onthe next page) and then red (see Figure 6 on the nextpage).

The unit is now ready for installation.4. After completing themagnet swipe, take the

Pressure Spy unit andMIU and install at the locationyou want to monitor. See Figure 7.

5: Connecting the Pressure Spy tothe R900 Pit MIU

Complete the following steps.

1. Connect the Pressure Spy andMIU by lining up theconnectors with the arrows pointed toward eachother.

2. Gently insert the Pressure Spy connector into theMIU connector and press together securely asshown in Figure 8.

6: Installing the Pressure Spy andthe R900 Pit MIU

l Formore detailed information andinstallation instructions, refer to theR900®Wall and Pit Installation andMaintenanceGuide (Part No. 12560-001).

l Before installing the Pressure Spy unit,make sure the cable is long enough.This allows you to easily remove thevalve box with attachedMIU withoutstraining the cable if you ever need toremove the device.

1. Feed the antennacable and housingthrough the 1.75-inchhole in themeter valvebox. See Figure 10.

2. Slip the large plastic nutover the antenna cable,and thread it onto theantenna assembly tosecure it to the pit lid.See Figure 11.

3. Make sure the smoothside at the top of thethreads on the nut isfacing upward. SeeFigure 12.

Figure 13 shows thecompleted installation.

4. Place the flat blackrubber washer on thelatch plate around themale coax connection.See Figure 14.

5. Apply a coating ofNovaGuard on the "F"connector, and connectit to the coax cable.

6. Slide the plastic latch plate cover over the "F"connector.

7. Press down and turn clockwise to secure. SeeFigure 16.

7. Slide the connector nutonto the threads and handtighten. Do not use pliers.See Figure 17.

8. Use the cable tie tohang theMIU fromthe antenna tube, ifthe valve box is in adeep vaultinstallation or alocation that can beflooded. See Figure18. Figure 18: Cable Tie

Installation of the Pressure Spy Unit

Due to its compact size and design, the Pressure Spycan be placed in small areas with minimal spacerequirements.

1. Place the Pressure Spy in small areas over confinedvalve enclosures, or allow the unit to rest on thepipes or floor of the vault. See Figure 19.

Be careful not to lodge theMIU betweenthe valve box and any components insidethe box.

2. Position themagnet (PartNo. 12287-001) against theleft side of theMIU directlyin line with the Neptunelogo.

3. Swipe it bringing it from theside and around the cornerto the top to activate theMIU. See Figure 20.

7: Testing the Pressure Spy Unit andR900 MIU Installation

After the R900MIU has been installed and wired, verifythat theMIU is working properly by running the testprogram.

To start the testing program, power up the handheld unit(HHU) test device.

l If you are using the CE5320 handheld,the receiver is integrated.

l If you are using the Trimble Nomadhandheld and the R900® Belt ClipTransceiver (BCT), make sure theR900 BCT is powered on before testing.

l The Neptune NGO™ App can be usedwith the R900 BCT for pressurereadings and to retrieve pressure loggingdata.

To avoid RF signal saturation of the HHU,position the receiver at least 2 to 3 feetfrom theMIU. In a densely saturated area,removing the CE5320 antenna from thehandheld can assist with readings. Youcan operate the R900 BCT normally.

When theMIU is installed correctly, theMIU ID andPressure Spy reading appear on the HHU's displaywithin oneminute.

All Pressure Spy units return six digits astheir read, and with Neptune's R900MIUyou can see two additional zeros (00) at theend of the read whichmakes it an eightdigit read.

The RF Test Read has three leading zerosthat are ignored. The fourth, fifth, and sixthpositions are the actual pressure read, andthe trailing zeros are ignored . Figure 21 isan example of a Pressure Spy Readthrough RF Test. The read of 00010400shows a pressure of 104 psi.

NGO Application and Android Device

After the R900MIU has been installed and connected tothe Pressure Spy, complete the following steps to get acurrent reading or to retrieve 96 days of hourly pressuredata.

Pressure Data - Current Reading1. Power on the R900 BCT and the Android device and

pair using Bluetooth.2. Open the NGO application on the Android device.

3. Click the NGOmenubutton. See Figure 22.

4. Click PressureReading. See Figure23. The PressureReading windowappears. SeeFigure 24 below.

5. Type theMIU ID.6. Click Capture.

The reading displays inthe form of a gauge. SeeFigure 24.

You can alsoclick PressureLog at thebottom of thewindow toretrieve data.

Pressure Data - 96 DaysTo retrieve pressure data without current readings,complete the following steps.

1. Click Pressure Log fromthe NGOMainMenu. SeeFigure 25.

Before leaving the installation site, be sure to:

Record theMIU ID for each Pressure Spyunit.Verify that you have followed all requirementsof this Quick Install Guide.Verify that you have recorded all requiredinformation.Clean up any installation debris.

Verify that the requirements of the site workorder have been completed.
