A LETTER FROM THE CO-CHAIRSDear Delegates,

Welcome to the second annual Queen’s Conference on the Entertainment Industry! After the success of QCEI’s inaugural conference last year, our executive team has been passionately working hard to bring QCEI to new heights and create an even better conference for you. The entire QCEI team is excited to have you join us this weekend, and we hope to give you one of the most memorable experiences of your university career!

As a conference focused on the business and management side behind one of the largest and most dynamic industries, QCEI will give you a new perspective on the entertainment content that we all love and consume. Throughout the weekend, you will get to learn about the many different facets of the entertainment industry. With representatives from the Film, Music, and Television industries, you are guaranteed to leave the conference with a new appreciation of the management behind the industry that we interact with so frequently. Our workshops will also give you a taste of what it is really like to work within this industry. Working together in teams, you will have the chance to apply your skills in project management, marketing, and business strategy, within an entertainment context. This is the chance to develop your own personal vision of a potential career in this thrilling industry.

With this year’s theme of “Behind the Scenes”, our goal is to show you how to turn your passion for entertainment into a viable career in this industry. We are here to show you the immense opportunities and careers that exist within the international and growing industry, and that a job in this field is not so impossible after all. Whether you’re seeking your CPA designation or excel in marketing, a career in the vast entertainment industry allows you the opportunity to combine your degree with your personal passions.

We hope you walk away from this conference with a newfound optimism that entertainment is a career path you are truly passionate about. With this discovery, all you have to do is pursue it with everything you’ve got, just like in any other industry. We hope you’ll start that path here, through the connections you’ll make at this very conference.

As President of Entetainment One’s Canadian television division, Jocelyn is responsible for leading Canada’s production and content teams to grow eOne’s content business globally. Prior to joining eOne, Jocelyn held numerous positions at Corus Entertainment including VP Production, VP Content, and VP Creative Development. Jocelyn sits on the board of Ryerson’s RTA program and regularly contributes to industry panels, mentorship programs and organizations.

Since 1994, Piers Handling has been CEO and Director of TIFF. Under his direction, TIFF opened the TIFF Bell Lightbox, housed five cinemas, two exhibition galleries, educational and learning studios, and presenting original programming. Prior to his position at TIFF, Piers was the Deputy Director of the Canadian Film Institute, taught Canadian cinema at Queen’s, and published numerous articles on Canadian cinema. In January 2014, Handling was invested into the Order of Ontario, the province’s highest official honour.

Andy Nulman is the two-time President of Just for Laughs International Comedy Festival. Under Andy’s leadership, JFL has attracted acts such as Jay Leno and Adam Sandler. In between his JFL stints, Andy was the President and CMO of Airborne Technology Ventures, and is currently the CEO of Play The Future, Inc. Andy is also an accomplished author and engaging speaker.

Initially starting out in business, Laura joined Shaftesbury Films in 1994, where she was on the production team for over 35 titles. In 2011 she joined Temple Street Productions as Senior Director of Programming, overseeing the development of hits such as Being Erica and Wingin’ It. Since Executive Producing The Next Step and Lost and Found Music Studios, Laura joined forces with Frank van Keeken to start Beachwood Canyon Productions.

Following experience at various Canadian media companies, Dervla is now the Vice President of Communications at Corus Entertainment. A leading media and content company, Corus’ portfolio consists of 45 specialty television services, 39 radio stations, 15 conventional television stations, a global content business, digital assets, live events, children’s book publishing, animation software, technology and media services.

Adrian Walker is the Director of Operations for the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre and TD Echo Beach in Toronto, Canada. He has been with Live Nation in various roles for the past 11 ½ years, holding positions as Facility Manager and Operations Manager. Adrian is responsible for all aspects of the venues including budgets, capital projects, staff, food and beverage and the overall on-site experience for the consumer.

Mariana is the Executive Director of Kid’s Programming at Disney, responsible for the implementation of programming initiatives across all Disney branded channels for Disney Kids content, creating marketing campaigns for Disney Kid’s lines of Canadian business, and the launch of the first Disney Channel in Canada in English and French across all platforms among many others. Prior to Disney, Mariana held various positions at entertainment conglomerate Bell Media.

Stephen Tapp was appointed Senior Vice President, Business Development of Stingray in 2015, overseeing relationships with record labels and the music industry in addition to being responsible for global and domestic business development. Previously, he was the Founding President of XM Satellite Radio Canada (now SiriusXM), founded Hercules Media Group Inc., and currently serves on the boards and advisory boards of several companies. He holds a B.A (Honours) Political Studies from Queen’s 1983.

As a marketing manager of live entertainment at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), Adam works with the marketing team to develop the MLSE Live brand. Owning and operating the ACC, Ricoh Coliseum, the BMO Field, and others, MLSE is an entertainment giant. Prior to his current role, he was an Account Executive in the MLSE Global Partnership team, managing a portfolio that included Nokia, Bacardi, and Jack Daniels.
