Perhaps the most famous of the surviving edifices is the Chehelsotoon (Kolah Farangi) mansion, today a museum in central Qazvin.

The roots of the Safavid dynasty can be traced back to the "Safaviyeh", a 14th century Sufi order founded in Ardebil by a Sunni dervish named Sheikh Safi al-Din (1252-1334). The Safavieh converted to Shiism at the turn of the 15th century and grew in popularity and strength as the years passed, due both to their attraction as puritanical mystics and Persian nationalists.

However in the Safavid reign Qazvin became capital and many buildings were built there. When the Qajars took the power in their hands, and made Tehran their capital, the importance of the city increased. Qazvin was located en route from Tehran to Europe and Russia. Today Qazvin has become one of the industrial cities in the country.

Chehel Soton is the only edifice left from the royal palaces of Shah Tahmasb I times. The wall paintings of the first floor are a typical work of Qazvin Painting School. The second floor of Chehel Soton is now used as a museum of Calligraphy. They hold collection of exquisite Calligraphy.
