• To handle the airline’s growth capacity, more than US$1 billion is being invested in infrastructure improvements at Doha International Airport.
• Construction includes a new transit terminal, extension of the existing Premium Terminal for Qatar Airways’ First and Business Class passengers, new arrivals terminal, new terminal for foreign airlines and additional aircraft parking bays.
NEW DOHA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
• It is located four kilometers from the existing airport and is to be scheduled to open by 2012.
• Construction work began in January 2005, at a cost of US $14.5 billion.
• It’s initial capacity will be 24 million passengers a year. Upon fully developed beyond 2015, airport is expected to handle up to 50 million passengers a year.
• This airport will help to shape Doha as a key regional and global aviation hub.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF QATAR AIRWAYS
1. HELPING HANDS
Supports a number of social projects worldwide. It helps children with special needs providing education for young
people in deprived areas.
2. FUEL EFFICIENCY
Initiatives to help to reduce fuel consumption. It’s FUEL OPTIMIZATION DEPARTMENT does research focusing on
reducing the dependence on fossil fuel and carbon footprints.
3. ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
– Works with IATA to develop a global carbon offset trading scheme designed to help fund global environmentalProjects.
– It has ENVIRONMENTAL DEPARTMENT that looks at ways to reduce usage of water, paper and with that reducewaste.
– It recycles all onboard and airport waste.
3. CLEANER ALTERNATIVE FUEL
Qatar airways has commitment to the research and development of projects to benefit the environment and increase
energy efficiency. To reduce impact of aviation on local and global air quality, Qatar airways have been doing research
for commercial use of jet fuel derived from natural gas.
