Discovering Ourselves

2012

Our DISCOVERYunit is an adventure through time! Get ready to dig into our past as we work to discover whatmakes us human. In the first week of this unit, we will learn about levels of questioning that will allow us to dig deeper

with our learning and we will study the job ofarcheologistsand paleoanthropologiststo see what all that digging inthe dirt is really all about. We will then introduce you to our hominid past, as we watch a fantastic video from theDiscovery Channel called Walking With Cavemen. The adventure will continue as we explore the answers to ouressential questions:

What allows a discovery to happen? How are discovery and truth connected? Why would a discovery not be accepted? What makes us human? How can we use questioning techniques to dig deeper?

This unit allows us to consider a variety of perspectives, and to draw our own conclusions about who we are as aspecies. As we move through the unit, we will explore an interactive website from the BBC called Becoming Human,

we will find out what the Theory of Evolutionis really about, well learn about fossil discoveriesthat have changedour thinking about the history of the world and humanity, and we will discover how the Neolithic Revolutioncauseda fundamental shift in who we are and how we live. There are links with science through our timeline project and withEnglish through our final performance assessment.
