HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?

THEME AND IMAGERY

Both my digipack case and album advert use the same imagery and theme. The images use dusky shots of a cityscape including buildings, roads and the skyline. They have all been edited to follow a similar colour scheme to create a sense of continuity between the images.

DIGIPACK

The front cover of my digipack shows the skyline of Chicago running along the bottom of the frame, with the evening sky taking up the majority of the shot. This style of image is conventional of the house genre as it fits with the urban and contemporary theme, by setting the music in a metropolitan and modern environment. The darkening sky in the image with the fade of light suggests nightfall, and therefore befitting of the genre creates the suggestion of a night of clubbing and partying in a city. The camera shots are all wide angled and therefore accentuate the scale of these landscapes and the mass of people who live there.

CONVENTIONS

Images of this nature are conventional of the house genre, which often depict exotic or impressive landscapes on their artwork in order to link to the theme of house music and the luxurious and exciting lifestyle typically attached to this genre. These conventions translate to my main product and create synergy with it through the suggestion that this might be the city in which the party is taking place, and the aerial style shots also suggest that numerous other parties of this type may be taking place on the same night. This links to the genre of house by the suggestion of its popularity, as it is a genre of music that will take over a whole city after sunset in clubs and houses alike.

COLOUR SCHEME & FONT

The dark and dusky colour scheme link to the darker colour scheme in the video, which refers to the time of day. Furthermore, this dark palette is interrupted by bright and neon lights, as shown by the spotlights on the bridge in the main image and similarly by the pink floor lights used in the video. The use of sans serif font in the centre of the page creates a simplistic and clean image that is typical of the stylish nature of this genre. I feel that my finished product is conventional and therefore similar to real existing products.

SYNERGY

The imagery in my ancillary projects is not directly linked to the video, and therefore creates a sense of narrative enigma as to what the album may consist of, whilst still being relevant to the theme of the final product. The difficulty in creating direct synergy with the product is the lack of characters featured on the digipack and advert. This means that the audience does not directly appropriate themselves with any other character in the products until the first viewing of the video and may lead to a lack of engagement with the ancillaries. However, in terms of creating suggestion and enigma this technique works better and is more conventional of the genre.
