I hope you’re enjoying a relaxing summer so far! The Canadian Pharmacists Conference 2017 was the highlight of our Q2-2017 activities here at CPhA. Jointly hosted with the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada, this year’s conference focused on Building on Yesterday and Caring for Tomorrow as we celebrated 400 years of pharmacy in Canada. This year’s CE lineup covered some of the most pressing issues facing our profession today: chronic disease management, home care, mental health services and, of course, the opioid crisis. You’ll find more details below, as well as in our Daily Wrap videos; and we hope you’ll join us at the Canadian Pharmacists Conference 2018, June 2–5, 2018, in Fredericton, NB.

Our work with governments and decision makers continued through this quarter, with new research into the value of pharmacy services taking centre stage. In conjunction with the Conference Board of Canada, our latest report shows that Canada-wide implementation of three pharmacy services could save Canada’s health care system up to $25.7 billion. We’re continuing to focus some of our energies on the economics of pharmacy services and anticipate additional findings in this area in the second half of this year.

More than 700 pharmacists and pharmacy stakeholders gathered in Quebec City from June 2–5 to discuss key issues facing Canada’s health care system and discover the latest in pharmacy practice research. The opioid crisis, mental health care and antimicrobial stewardship were among the critical topics addressed at the Canadian Pharmacists Conference 2017, jointly presented by CPhA and the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada. In addition to a diverse range of learning sessions exploring key pharmacy issues and innovative practices, delegates were treated to engaging keynotes by opening speaker Alexandre Bilodeau, two-time Olympic gold medallist,

Largest annual showcase of pharmacy practice research

More than 100 abstracts were submitted, with 20 oral research presentations held and more than 50 posters presented, making the Canadian Pharmacists Conference 2017 the largest Canadian pharmacy practice research conference program to date. Highlighting this year’s theme Building on Yesterday, Caring for Tomorrow, the conference research program featured results from local trials and multi-site research projects, including new approaches to medication management, innovative care models and patient services under expanded scope of practice. Pharmacy Practice Research Winners 2017

Oral and poster presentations were evaluated by members of the pharmacy practice research community. Our congratulations to Jillian Reardon and Barbara Gobis from the UBC Pharmacists Clinic for the best pharmacy practice research poster for “Perceptions of pharmacy students involved in preventative health and wellness events at the University of British Columbia,” and to Ai-Leng Foong, PharmD Candidate, UWaterloo for the best pharmacy practice research oral presentation, “Ready or not? Pharmacist perceptions of a changing scope of practice before it happens.” Winners were presented with a certificate and a free registration for next year’s conference.

BC pharmacist named 2017 Canadian Pharmacist of the Year

Vancouver pharmacist Craig Plain was named 2017 Canadian Pharmacist of the Year leading up to the Canadian Pharmacists Conference in early June. A pharmacist at the Pier Health Resource Centre, Craig leads a clinically focused practice in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, an area with high rates of homelessness, substance abuse, mental illness and overdoses. In the face of a national opioid crisis, Craig’s tireless commitment to some of the most vulnerable patients in the country is demonstrating the power that innovative community pharmacy can have in improving health outcomes for at-risk populations. CPhA is proud to recognize the impact Craig has had on his patients and the pharmacist profession. Craig was honoured alongside other CPhA Award winners at the Canadian Pharmacists Conference awards ceremony on June 2 in Quebec City.

Pharmacy community gathers for Opioid Summit

On June 2 CPhA brought together a broad range of pharmacy organizations for the 2017 Pharmacy Opioid Summit during the Canadian Pharmacists Conference in Quebec City. Part of CPhA’s commitments in the Government of Canada Joint Action Plan on Opioids, the Summit focused on sharing and discussing pharmacy-specific strategies and actions with a broad range of pharmacy stakeholders and identifying further opportunities for pharmacy involvement in resolving the crisis. CPhA issued a statement following the summit and released a collection of commitments and actions offered by each participating organization.

$25.7 billion over the next 20 years, depending on the level of uptake of these services, according to a report released in late April by The Conference Board of Canada. The report, The Value of Expanded Pharmacy Services in Canada, part of a three-part research series commissioned by CPhA, reviews the health and economic impact of three services that are currently delivered within a community pharmacy setting—smoking cessation, advanced medication review for heart disease and pneumococcal vaccination. The report was officially released on April 25 at an Economic Club of Canada event in Toronto entitled Billion Dollar Idea: Expanding Pharmacy Services. Learn more at pharmacists.ca/valueofpharmacy.

CPhA disappointed medical cannabis regime does not enhance patient safety

On April 13 CPhA issued a statement following the federal government’s introduction of the Cannabis Act to legalize and regulate recreational marijuana by July 2018. The bill maintains the existing Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR), while creating a dual market for recreational marijuana. While CPhA is pleased that the government will maintain the existing market for medical cannabis, we are disappointed that the new law does not propose any changes to the medical regime to improve patient safety, including pharmacist management and dispensing. In addition, CPhA is pleased to see recommendations to protect the health and safety of recreational users reflected in the legislation, including public education, minimum age for legal purchase, clear product warnings, and training for retail staff.

CPhA appears before Health Committee on AMR

In mid-June CPhA appeared before the Standing Committee on Health (HESA) as part of its study on antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Shelita Dattani, Director, Practice Development and Knowledge Translation, highlighted the key role pharmacists can play as antimicrobial stewards in areas such as public education, immunization, prescribing for minor ailments, counselling patients and optimizing prescribing by other health care providers. CPhA’s recommendations to the Committee included harmonization of pharmacists’ expanded scope of practice across Canada, fully integrated DIS and functional Electronic Health Records, national prescribing guidelines and the inclusion of the indication on all antibiotic prescriptions. CPhA appeared alongside the Canadian Nurses Association, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada. CPhA Chair discusses Canadian pharmacy in London

CPhA Chair Alistair Bursey delivered a presentation on Canadian pharmacy at the Pharmaceutical Group of the European Union (PGEU) Annual Symposium on June 13 in London. In his presentation, Alistair discussed various aspects of pharmacy in Canada, including the evolution of pharmacists’ role across the country and the health and economic value of expanded scope, particularly surrounding hypertension care. The Annual Symposium brought together pharmacy associations and health care stakeholders from across the EU to share best practices. With the theme “Leading the Change,” the event focused on pressures that health systems will face in coming years and the challenges that leaders face in facilitating change.

CPhA discusses value of expanding pharmacy services at Economic Club

CPhA joined The Conference Board of Canada on April 25 in Toronto at the Economic Club of Canada event Billion Dollar Idea: Expanding Pharmacy Services. The Conference Board’s Vice President, Public Policy, Louis Theriault discussed the opportunity for governments to fund life-saving health care services in community pharmacy, highlighting three pharmacy services with the potential for scale up and expansion. In addition to opening remarks by CPhA’s Chair Alistair Bursey, the event featured an armchair discussion moderated by CPhA CEO Perry Eisenschmid with panellists Christine Hrudka, Vice Chair, Canadian Pharmacists Association; Nardine Nakhla, Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Waterloo; and Sherilyn Houle, Assistant Professor, University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy.

2017 Canadian Pharmacist of the Year makes national headlines

CPhA announced that Vancouver pharmacist Craig Plain was named 2017 Canadian Pharmacist of the Year in early June. Following the announcement, Craig was featured in several media stories, including CBC Radio’s national public affairs program, The Current, CBC Vancouver’s The Early Edition, CBC News online and several local

Vancouver papers. Several radio stories included significant on-site interviews with Craig as he visited patients on Vancouver’s downtown eastside.

Pharmacist role in hypertension care

Following the release of a new study highlighting the benefits of pharmacist care in hypertension management in late March, the report continued to receive considerable media coverage during Q2, including by the Royal Pharmaceutical Journal and CBC Radio, which featured the topic on 23 of its regional morning shows across Canada.

CPhA Webinars

Hypertension: A SPRINT to the finish

In mid-May CPhA and the Ontario Pharmacists Association jointly presented a webinar on managing patients with hypertension. Speaker Laura Tsang discussed the role of pharmacists, including patient assessment, pharmacologic treatment options and strategies to help patients reach their targets. An update on the 2017 Canadian Hypertension Guidelines was also provided. The well-attended webinar was presented twice and was a precursor for participating in a follow-up practical workshop at the Canadian Pharmacists Conference 2017.

How to turn a project into a research study

CPhA and the Canadian Pharmacy Practice Research Group held a webinar in April on how to turn workplace quality improvement projects into research. Presenter Lisa Dolovich walked participants through the basic elements of research design and reporting, and illustrated how easy it can be to make a difference in pharmacists’ daily practice.

CPPRG Executive Committee welcomes new members

The Canadian Pharmacy Practice Research Group (CPPRG) Executive Committee Call for Nominations 2017 attracted many qualified candidates in May. Canadian Pharmacists Journal

CPJ continued to publish important guidelines in 2017, including “Guidelines for outpatient cancer care by community pharmacists,” which appeared in the Jan/Feb issue. This article highlighted work that Cancer Care Nova Scotia has been doing to prepare online toolkits for pharmacists and other health care practitioners to access for various cancer medications.

The March/April issue included another article in our “Focus on Dementia” series, entitled “Dementia: What pharmacists need to know.” This issue also carried a handy practice tool on managing venous thromboembolism. A timely practice tool appeared in our May/June issue, “Ramadan fasting and medications,” which proved to be a popular handout at the CPJ Booth at the Canadian Pharmacists Conference in early June.

Our featured article in the May/June issue, “Cost-effectiveness of pharmacist care for managing hypertension in Canada,” was available online at the end of March, to coincide with the CPhA release of a report on the same topic. This article has received excellent coverage in mainstream and academic media, including CBC Radio, Science

As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, CPhA was excited to release a new version of RxTx on March 9. Based on user feedback, major enhancements across all online products included:

RxTx Mobile – Release 4.0

On May 15 CPhA released the redesigned RxTx Mobile App for both iOS and Android. We’ve made significant improvements to the interface while minimizing the learning curve. New features include:

• Fresh new look

• More powerful search engine

• Easier navigation

McKesson pilots new RxTx Integration product in dispensing software

Throughout Q2 CPhA worked with a number of Pharmacy Dispensing System vendors to integrate RxTx drug and therapeutic content into their products. In July McKesson and CPhA will pilot this integrated solution with five pharmacies in the Ottawa Region. It is anticipated that the pilot will be completed in early August and will then transition to a controlled rollout across Canada. CPhA expects that all pharmacies using McKesson’s PharmaClik Rx will have access to the integrated RxTx by September 2017.
