Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

• Throughout the production of my music magazine, I have portrayed several conventions of real music magazines, for example on my front cover, the Masthead is the largest aspect of the page, in addition, using a barcode as well as a price of the magazine on the front cover.

• I would argue that parts of my media product stick to the common conventions of music magazines, whereas in other parts I have chosen to go against the natural formula. The formulaic parts go with EDM as a whole big genre, however the less structural parts link in with the large number of sub-genres linked to EDM.

• The genre of electronic dance music (EDM) can be defined as a broad range of percussive electronic music genres produced primarily for dance-based entertainment, used in places such as nightclubs, raves and festivals.

• The music is largely produced for playback by disc jockeys (DJ’s) and is generally used in the context of a live DJ mix

• I believe that my magazine has succeeded in following my chosen genre of EDM. This is due to the bright and neon colours and funky fonts illustrated in my magazine. This example is developing a convention of a real media product because it makes the magazine pleasing on the eye.

For my front cover I have both challenged and developed the conventions of real media products:• I have chosen for my front cover to have a lack of formula, this

is illustrated in the placing of the cover lines. I feel this is effective because it link to the genre of EDM where there are beats at a random tempo – therefore here I have challenged the natural conventions of a magazine from cover.

• In the other hand, for the structure of my magazine I have followed the conventions of the ‘Z’ technique (the line of readers eyes) and the rule of thirds technique. It follows the ‘Z’ technique as the heart rate monitor forces the reader to look all across the to the other side of the page, the picture is the diagonal line of the Z and the strapline is the bottom of the Z. The rule of thirds also applies as the cover lines lay on either side of the picture.

• The photo I have taken is another challenge to real media products because of the lack of eye contact from the model. I chose to take a ‘in action’ shot because I believe that it goes with the conventions of EDM as a DJ is the main focus of the genre. I took a picture of a DJ mixing on the decks.

• The main conventions I have chosen to follow are: a freebie (QR code), Date and Issue number, Strapline (Your number 1 insight into everything EDM).

For my contents page I have also both challenged and developed the conventions of real media products:• I have chosen to create a formulaic contents page. I have

done this because I think that it is a neat structure where you can find all that you need to easily. This contents page is adhering to the conventions in order to not detract from the contents of the magazine.

• For the house style of my magazine, I have tried to use techniques, which link all three parts of my magazine together. I have used similar colours, for example pink and blue, which are both used in my front cover. This is effective because the reader will not get lost and helps them to link parts of my magazine together. I have also placed the title of my magazine (BPM) in the top corner. I have done this in the same font to also make the link to the front cover.

For my double page spread I have also both challenged and developed the conventions of real media products:• The big quote pulled out of the article is

an effective technique as it excites the reader and forces them to read the further article.

• The content of this review of an interview conforms to the conventions of real media products, it is well written using certain creative writing techniques to excite the reader, for example quotes and facts about the famous artist.

• From my research of real music magazines and my chosen genre, I decided to do a review rather than an interview. Another reason is my target audience of 18 – 25’s. If it was younger children I would do an interview due to being easier to follow.

• I have also kept a colour link of pink and blue throughout which helps with the house style.
