1. Also known as ‘scaly anteaters’, is in huge demand in medicine market especially in
China.
2. It has been categorized as Vulnerable under IUCN Red List.
3. Recently, The Madhya Pradesh has radio-tagged an Indian Pangolin for the first time
in order to know its ecology and develop an effective conservation plan for it.
Which of the above statements is/are correct?
a. 1 only
b. 2 and 3 only
c. 1 and 3 only
d. 1, 2 and 3
Solution: c
Explanation:
Pangolins are currently the most trafficked wildlife species in the world. Commonly
known as ‘scaly anteaters’, the toothless animals are unique, a result of millions of years of
evolution. Pangolins evolved scales as a means of protection. When threatened by big
carnivores like lions or tigers they usually curl into a ball. The scales defend them against
dental attacks from the predators.
However, this unique protection mechanism has now become the main cause of the
pangolin’s disappearance. The scales are in high demand in China, where they are used in
traditional Chinese medicine. Pangolin meat is also in high demand in China and
southeast Asia.
India is home to two species of pangolin. While the Chinese Pangolin is found in
northeastern India, the Indian Pangolin is distributed in other parts of the countries as
well as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Both these species are protected and are listed under the Schedule I Part I of the
Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and under Appendix I of the Convention on
International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). The measure comes as the world
gets ready to observe the ninth ‘World Pangolin Day’ on February 15, 2020.
GOALTIDE PRELIMS DAILY QUIZ, 17 FEBRUARY
The Madhya Pradesh forest department has radio-tagged an Indian Pangolin for the
first time in order to know its ecology and develop an effective conservation plan for
it. The radio-tagging is part of a joint project by the department and non-profit, the Wildlife
Conservation Trust (WCT) that also involves the species’ monitoring apart from other
activities.

Q2. In the context of Forest Fires in India, consider the following statements.

forest fire management in the country.
2. As per the India State of Forest Report 2019, most of the fire prone forest area are

a. 1 only
GOALTIDE PRELIMS DAILY QUIZ, 17 FEBRUARY
b. 2 only
c. Both 1 and 2
d. Neither 1 nor 2
Solution: c
Explanation:
This question is basically to make you learn that there exists national plan to control
forest fires in India. Question looks easy now but during exam, you will get confused, if you
don’t know these facts. It is equally important to know that forest fires are maximum in
which region. Basic questions. No need to learn figures/numbers. Just have basic idea.
Forest fires are one of the major drivers of damage caused to forests in the country.
Uncontrolled forest fires can lead to significant losses of forests and ecosystem services.
Studies suggest that climate change influences forest fire frequency and intensity which
results in forests becoming increasingly inflammable . The increasing duration of forest fire
season, numbers of large fires, frequency of severe fire years may be related to climate
change. Besides direct losses, foresters have to also deal with many side effects of
fires such as increasing spread of weeds, soil erosion, loss of regeneration,
landslides, habitat degradation, loss of forest produce etc. Controlled fire has
traditionally been used as a tool of forest management. However, uncontrolled fires of
anthropogenic origin are a serious concern for sustainability of forests.
To control all this:
It is seen that most of the fire prone forest area are found in the northeastern region
and the central part of the country.

Q3. ‘Vivad se Vishwas’ scheme, announced by the government of India in budget 2020, is
related to which of the following?
a. NPAs of banking sector
b. Railway sector
c. Direct taxes
d. Cooperative federalism among states
Solution: c
Explanation:
The Vivad se Vishwas scheme was announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala
Sitharaman during her budget speech on February 1, 2020.
GOALTIDE PRELIMS DAILY QUIZ, 17 FEBRUARY
Under this scheme, taxpayers whose tax demands are locked in dispute in multiple
forums, can pay due to taxes by March 31, 2020, and get a complete waiver of
interest and penalty. If a taxpayer is not able to pay within the deadline, he gets a further
time till June 30, but in that case, he would have to pay 10% more on the tax.
The Vivad se Vishwas scheme is similar to the ‘Indirect Tax, Sabka Vishwas’ scheme,
which was introduced by Finance Minister during her maiden budget presentation in July
2019. The “Sabka Vishwas” legacy dispute resolution scheme was aimed at reducing
disputes related to excise and service tax payments.

Explanation:
Recently, The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has said that climate
change would push 100 million people into the abyss of poverty by 2030. Close to half of these
would be due to climate change’s impacts on agriculture.
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of the
United Nations, was one of the major outcomes of the 1974 World Food Conference.
A brief history:
The conference was organized by the United Nations in response to the food crises of the
early 1970s, when global food shortages were causing widespread famine and
malnutrition, primarily in the Sahelian countries of Africa. World leaders realized that food
insecurity and famine were not so much failures in food production but structural
problems relating to poverty. This was compounded by the fact that the majority of the
developing world's poor people lived in rural areas.
In response to these complex challenges, it was decided that an “an International Fund for
Development should be established immediately to finance agricultural development projects,
primarily for food production in the developing countries … The Fund shall provide financing
primarily for projects and programmes specifically designed to introduce, expand or
improve food production systems and to strengthen related policies and institutions …”
Three years after the Rome conference, IFAD was set up as an international financial
institution in 1977.
India is a member since 1977.
