Kororoit Creek Primary School has a zero tolerance for any form of child abuse 04 May 2018 Thank-you to everyone for another busy yet very successful fortnight! Front of School Refurbishment You may be aware of the works happening at the front of school. It has been a long time in the making however the development of an amphitheatre and outdoor learning space at the front of the school has finally begun. As valued members of our school community we are inviting you to become a permanent part of Kororoit Creek Primary School’s history. Families have the opportunity to purchase a personalised, engraved paver, to be placed on the pathways as a part of the refurbishment of the front of the school. The pavers will be laid in the pathways and around our new amphitheatre and learning space. Purchase a paver and be a part of our history! The cost of the pavers will be $30 each or $25 when 3 or more pavers are purchased. The money raised will go towards the refurbishment at the front of the school. Students will have an opportunity to design their paver during their Art lesson and parents can choose to purchase their design. To ensure the designs of the pavers are appropriate there are some restrictions as to what can be drawn on the paver. To support families, who may like to create a family or sibling paver we will hold ‘Paver workshops’ after school where families are invited to come along and staff will assist with the design and provide you with the appropriate resources. The pavers will be red in colour and are 230x115x40mm in size. Paver Workshops will be advertised on Compass and order forms will go home with a copy of your child’s design in the upcoming weeks. Grip Leadership- Student Leaders Conference

On Thursday 26 April our school leadership team participated in a comprehensive one-day leadership program aimed at building their leadership capacity. At this event they met with students from other schools across Victoria, and developed their leadership skills in a positive group environment. The students found the day to be engaging and relevant to their role. The program involved three sessions. Leaders as Transformers where students learnt about the four things that help transform someone into a leader. Lead like a Strawberry not like a Watermelon which, unpacked the meaning of integrity, how leaders may display integrity and ways they help others. The last session was about Making a Positive Change and the ways they can contribute positive change in the school through planning and developing an idea. The students walked away renewed and empowered to make positive changes in the school, as well as looking for opportunities to influence others.

Grade 2 Light and Sound incursion Last week, Grade 2 explored some of the scientific principles of light and sound in an exciting incursion run by Hands on Science. Students participated in many mini experiments that allowed them to investigate the characteristics of light and sound. They learned about refracting light, by using glass prisms to see rainbows, and played with inverting images by using magnifying glasses. While learning about sound, students represented the movement of sound waves through a visual demonstration with a slinky. They used many different materials to test the capacity of different mediums to carry sound. Tuning fork experiments were very popular for exploring differences in pitch and volume, and students were delighted to discover the effects of putting a rapidly vibrating object into water!

Grade 5 Immigration Journeys Incursion Last week, the Grade 5 students participated in an incursion about immigration to Australia. Students completed a series of interactive activities to learn about the history of immigration to Australia, the reasons why people immigrate and the benefits and contributions of immigrants to Australian society.

Here is what some of the students thought; Sonix (H46) ‘I thought it was really helpful and informative because I learnt new things about the reasons for migrating!’ Sienna (H46) ‘It was a fun way of learning!’ Deegan (H46) ‘I liked the activities because they were fun and entertaining’ Anisha H47; I like that we had to find the objects that belong to different migrations groups, they were very interesting.

TYRE PUNCTURES LET DOWN CREEPERS!!!

On Sunday 29th April the KCPS HPV team competed in the the second round of the HPV Grand Prix Series. The Kororoit Creek Creepers were feeling ready after a successful race in March and many focussed training sessions in the lead up to this race. KCPS were competing against eight other teams in the Junior category and sharied the track with 74 other vehicles. The skies were blue, the sun was bright and the crowd was loud. Everyone was ready to race. Within the first half of the race, 3 hours in, the cracks began to show. A small crash, a right wheel puncture, then a rear wheel puncture, followed by the left wheel. Unfortunatelty luck was not on our side. These punctures cost the team over 10 laps, which put top three position out of reach. Unfortunately their streak of bad luck didn’t stop there as yet another tyre

puncture meant another stop in the pit. This didn’t stop the team, they kept fighting and were able to race away from the vehicles behind them and close the gap between them and the top teams to finish in 5th position. It was a rollercoaster of a day!

Well done Creepers on continuing to ride, fight for your position on the track and finish with your heads held high. The bike will now visit the workshop to prepare for the next race in Bendigo, August 18th.

On Friday 27thth of April, the Grade Six Football Team played in the district football tournament held at St Albans Football Ground. The team played three matches for the day.

In the first match we played Deer Park North, going down by 5 points, 7-12. The best players for the match were, Zach who showed great leadership as our captain, Arshnoor who took some great intercepting marks in the backline, Ridham who controlled the ball at full back, Bradman was a prolific ball winner in the middle and Lucy kicking our only goal for the day. In the second match we lost to Derrimut 2-21 in a tough match up. All players showed great determination with the best players being Joshua helping out with ruck duties, Dylan and Brandon Jones confusing the opposition with leather positioning down back, Shania going in hard for the ball and Tyler taking some good marks.

The third and last game saw us coming up against Cairnlea Park. We defended well but eventually lost 2-14. The best players for this game were Ayden who tackled hard in the middle of the ground, Keegan who had been great all day, Amias running hard both ways, Mikayla who was great down back and Dominic with some silky skills to go along with his new boots.

Overall the team played with courage and determination, especially considering they played with no bench all day. Jamel was awarded with the Best and Fairest for Kororoit Creek for a great all-round performance and setting the example for good sportsmanship. - Corey

On Thursday 3rd of May, KCPS had 52 students compete in the Deer Park District Cross-Country Competition at More Park. This competition required students to run over 2km’s, running against 11 other primary schools from the Deer Park District. In order to qualify through to the Keilor Divisional Cross-Country Tournament students had to finish in the top 10 for their race. A huge achievement considering there were up to 100 students in each race. KCPS is proud to say that all students showed determination and willpower in completing their race to the best of their ability. In a first for our school, we had over half the students make it through to the next competition. A true representation of the hard work and commitment these students have put into their training over the last 6 weeks. Thank you to all of the parents for coming and supporting ALL students throughout the day, it was great to see! Also from the PE staff, parents and students a special Thank you to Amanda Stevenson who has been training and teaching students the keys to running their best cross-country race possible
