was born in 1840 in Votkinsk, a small town in present-day Udmurtia. His
father, Ilya PetrovichTchaikovsky, was an
engineer who served as a lieutenant colonel. His
mother, Alexandra Andreyevnad'Assier, was a granddaughter
of the French sculptor. Tchaikovsky had four brothers
and two sisters.
Education and marriage
Tchaikovsky graduated from the Imperial School of Jurisprudence in Saint
Petersburg and the attended Saint Petersburg Conservatory.
In July 1877, Tchaikovskymarried his former student,
Antonina Miliukova. Almost assoon as the wedding ended, Tchaikovsky realised he hadmade a mistake. The couple
lived together for only two anda half months before the
emotional crisis forced him toleave. He and Antonina
remained legally married butnever lived together again nor
had any children.
Composer and conductor
Pyotr IlyichTchaikovsky was a
Russian composer whose works
included symphonies, concertos, operas and ballets. He also worked as Professor ofMusic Theory at the MoscowConservatory. He was the first Russian composer
whose music made a lasting impression
internationally, which he upheld with appearances as a guest conductor later in his career in Europe and
the United States.
Death and Legacy
On 6 November 1893 PyotrIlyich Tchaikovsky died in Saint
Petersburg, at the age of 53. Theofficial cause of death was
reported to be cholera, mostprobably contracted throughdrinking contaminated water
several days earlier. He is buriedat the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
Tchaikovsky was a musical genius. He is well known all around the world. Some of his works are among the most popular theatrical
music in the classical repertoire. It’s
because of people like Tchaikovsky that I’m proud to
be Russian.
