What is basically known as family violence?

Family violence can be defined as a pattern of abusivebehaviours by one or both partners in an intimate

relationship such as marriage, family or a combination.

Family violence may or may not

    constitute a crime, depending on

local statues, severity and duration of

    specific acts, and other variables.

The survey involving 29 people, half of

which are less than 20 years old.

Majority think that victims are usually female. This

may be because females are less likely to be able

to protect themselves from a more physically

    capable man.

Which gender do you think is usually the victim of family violence?

    A)Male B)Female

Which age group is most likely to be the victim of family violence?

    A) 0-19 B) 20-40 C) 41-60 D) 61-100

Majority think that victims are below 20 years of age. Thismay be because the public feels that the people around this

age are unable to protect themselves from their family. This

was also supported by the school counsellor.

Most think that abusers are 36-50 years of age. This maybe because people around this age have more stress. To

relieve their stress, they might use violence. This

statement is also supported by the school counsellor.

Which age group is most likely to be the culprit of family violence?

    A) 0-19 B) 20-35 C) 36-50 D) 51-65

What kind of family violence do you think usually happens in Singapore?

    A) Child Abuse B) Spouse Abuse C) Elderly Abuse D) Other

We can infer that the public think that child abuse is morecommon in Singapore. This can be due to the facts that

child abuse cases are more commonly published, and that

children are not as able to protect themselves.

Most think that family violence is mostly caused by stress.

Overloaded schedules induce large amounts of stress,

which the abuser releases through violence.

Which factor do you think causes family violence?

    A) Escapism B) Family upbringing C) Stress D) Misunderstanding
