Parent Mission Statement

While we all hope that our children will do well in school, we hope with even greater fervor that they will do well in life. Our job is to help them know and appreciate themselves deeply, to be resilient in the face of adversity, to approach the world with zest, to find work that is satisfying, friends and spouses who are loving and loyal, and to hold a deep belief that they have something meaningful to contribute to the world.

- Madeline Levine, PhD

What Colleges Look For

● Strength of high school schedule – rigor and upward trends● Academic GPA● Go beyond minimum course requirements● Students is well rounded ● Student shows commitment rather than involvement in activities● SAT or ACT

Page 30: PVHS Incoming 9th Grade Parent · The Block Schedule alternates between A-days (periods 1,2,3) B-days (periods 4,5,6) ... question and undertake independent research ... Myth Busters!

Myth Busters! It’s impossible to get into a good college today. There are about 40 colleges that are absurdly difficult to get into. But there are over 2,000 colleges in the country, and all but about 100 of them take pretty much everybody who applies. The harder you work and the more successful you are, the more college opportunities you’re going to have, so your efforts are certainly worth it. But don’t take yourself out of the game by believing that only straight - A, perfect test scoring, proton-inventing students get into college.

Stress and Anxiety

• Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances

• Seen an increase in students being diagnosed with depression and anxiety

• Important for teenagers to have a balance and healthy coping skills

Page 43: PVHS Incoming 9th Grade Parent · The Block Schedule alternates between A-days (periods 1,2,3) B-days (periods 4,5,6) ... question and undertake independent research ... Myth Busters!

Perspectives To Consider

• It’s not a race or a competition • High school should be a time to explore things

due to genuine interest • A trend upward is always positive • Focus on life – college isn’t the end. • Failure is inevitable and necessary for growth

and learning – teaches coping skills …
