These teasing, mystifying and funny puzzles are designed to sharpenyour intelligence, imagination, spontaneity and emotional balance.Your assumptions, deductions and lateral thinking skills get better, making a sense of bizarre.

For a question, If one hen lays one egg per day, how many eggstwo hens lay in two days, the student replied, It is not in oursyllabus. In interviews, many candidates are not able to answersimple questions due to tension and lack of spontaneity.

This book creates immense interest to those, who are averse tomaths and reasoning. It is a big fun-game when family members sittogether, solve puzzles, and tease each other; parents awardingchildren for correct answers.

PrefaceA girl asked her mother what is wisdom? The mother showed a jar and enquiredwhether she would eat a cup of sugar. The girl surprised No.

How about eating eggs or maida?

The girl was more confused. Then the mother explained, But you would love to eat themixture of all these ingredients called cake. Isnt it? Same way, wisdom is the final

product. The ingredients are intelligence, knowledge, skill, logic and experience.Individually all are essential but insignificant if not combined in correct proportions.

    Tips to master maths:

Mathematics is a peculiar subject. In the initial stages, it depends on your industry andlater on your intelligence. It is one of the subjects, wherein you can score hundredpercent to enhance your total percentage.

Many students are afraid of maths. It is such an easy and interesting subject, once youstart understanding the basics. Be thorough with them. Without comprehensiveknowledge about fundamental formulas, techniques, multiplication tables, laws andtheorems you cannot expect to be good at maths.

Unlike other subjects, each lesson in maths is built on the previous ones. Falling a day

behind puts you at a confused position. Never hesitate to ask questions. A little doubtnow, leads to a huge roadblock in future.

Maths is learned by doing various types of problems. While solving a problem, know thenearest and correct route to reach the answer. Understand the problem first. Then devisea plan. Apply your skills and techniques. If you fail to reach the target, use othervariables. This applies to management accounts, statistics, and costing.

    Life vs. maths:

If some people believe that mathematics is tough, it is only because they do not realisehow complicated life is said Ramanujam, the maths pundit. Reasoning is the back-bonefor maths. Failure in not getting the correct solution teaches you how to look back tolocate your mistake, amend your equations and arrive at correct solution. This applies to

    real life also.

Convert your life problem into simple mathematics. Draw a formula. Locate the nucleus of the crisis. Once you

are clear about the cause of your problem, automatically you would know the method of approach to sort it out.

    INTELLIGENCE, FUN AND AMUSEMENT:

A cat breaks two legs if it jumps from two feet. How many does it break by jumpingfrom two-and-half feet? I asked a boy, who replied, Two-and-half legs. He is from aninstitution that taught him rapid mathematics five hours a day. He is really good inmultiplications and is able to multiply a four digit number with another three digit onewithin a minute. The proud parents claim that he is brilliant in maths withoutunderstanding what the boy is lacking.

The concept of education with entertainment includes identifying the limitations of achild through fun, hilarity and amusement. Instead of blaming the child for securing lowranks, parents should try to trace out phobias and fields of deficiency.

  • 7/27/2019 Puzzles Final Book (1)

    9/90

Many parents complain about their children. My child is intelligent and used to get goodmarks earlier. But we dont know whats happening now they say. A child cannot be saidintelligent, just because he scores good ranks. Up to school level, students get goodranks, if they are industrious. But as they go to a higher plane, a student requireswisdom.

Wisdom includes both memory and intelligence. When a student solves a mathematicalequation faster than others, it is his intelligence. When a student is good in history he isindustrious.

Mathematics is the poetry of logical ideas said Newton. Developing interest inmathematics is one of the best virtues for a student in the elementary stage ofeducation. Studying math is different from studying other subjects, as studying is of twotypes,Active and Passive. Mathematics requires active study. Whenever you are bored or

    feel sleepy, engage in mathematics.

    PARADIGM SHIFT DEFICIENCY:

Many students and their parents complain about lack of concentration. LOC is the finaleffect. The basic defects initiate from Sluggish Reflex Actions (SRA), lack of ProblemAnalyzing Capacity (PAC) and Paradigm Shift Deficiency (PSD).

Suppose a teacher is explaining: Compare benzene ring structure with cyclohexen, andC6H10 is a ring of six carbon atoms the child may not understand anything, if hisreflexes are not quick as his foundation is weak. To a question, If yesterday istomorrow, today is Monday. What is today? if the student is reluctant even to try, hisreflex actions are supposed to be sluggish. Children with SRA live in their caves. They arenot curious to answer. By encouraging them with rewards, parents can develop interest

in logical thinking, enthusiasm, correct approach to the problem and above all, willingness to accept a challenge. This books helps in this contest.

If 2a + 2b= 4, what is b + a? If the child cannot answer this simple question, it iscalled lack of PAC. Some children cannot hit upon a divergent approach to solve adifferent problem based on same identical principle. They are normally poor inmathematics and at a later stage in subjects such as statistics, Engineering, Accounts,Costing and Decision-making Management.

A beggars elder brother died. The person, who died, has no younger brother, how? Achild must be able to answer this question. Dont worry even if he cannot. Give him asmall tip. All beggars need not be male. If the child cannot answer even then, hisparadigm shifting capacity (PSD) is at a lower plane.

Optimism knows what the tips are, but success knows where thepits are. Know the pitsfirst. This book shows your deficiencies, encourages locating your sphere of weaknessand enlightens various ways to get the correct answer.

  • 7/27/2019 Puzzles Final Book (1)

    10/90

Hyperactivity is contrary to the three above mentioned defects. Children withhyperactivity are very much eager to answer every question. Even difficult problemsappear to be silly to them. Finally they fail to answer correctly due to their overenthusiasm. For example, the child who cannot correctly count how many Fs are in thefollowing sentence is supposed to be hyperactive. Finished files are fine fruits of years ofdeep scientific study, combined with the experience of years.

Ask your child to write from 100 to 0 downwards with a gap of 7 i.e. 100-93-86 and soon. It should not take more than two minutes depending on age. But anyway time is notthe criteria. If there are more than two mistakes and more particularly if the childcompletes it fast and throws the paper on you and goes away, that is the symptom ofAttention deficiency and Hyper activeness.

    Using Your Unconscious Mind

Let your unconscious mind do your problem-solving, using one of several techniques.First, try outlining a problem in your mind before going to sleep, and telling your brain togo to work. Einstein had good luck with this technique, sometimes getting the "ah-ha"insight while shaving the next morning. Next, instruct your mind to keep working on theproblem while you are doing other things. There is more than we know going on insideour heads. Finally, work on problems when you are in a drowsy state. This can result inmore creative solutions.

    FOR WHOM THIS BOOK IS?

Solving puzzles in this book reduces over-confidence of hyper active children on one side, develops interest in

children with PSD on the other. It enriches fast reflex actions and eases tension. If you are ateacher, give one puzzle a day and ask your students to work on it. Here are 250 puzzles suffice for250 working days. Thus you are indirectly training them to tackle more complicated future.

An intelligent and conversant candidate may also not be able to withstand tension in interviews. Some of the questions test the capacity to hold your nerve under pressure. Solving these puzzles, finding out the mistakes normally people do teaches you how to approach a question, how not tobe in a hurry to quickly respond to it. We always suggest candidates to take a deep breath, smileand answer in interviews.

May be you are in 5th class or a Post graduate in Mathematics, this book suits you. Questions andanswers are framed in such a way that elaborated explanations are given for the sake of thosestudents who are of less standard.

Many of these questions are asked at interviews for high positions and big salaries. Dont feel

dismayed even if you are not able answer some of them. A mathematical genius or a logical thinkermay also find it difficult to answer certain questions. Tease your friends with these questions andwin a bet. Sit with parents, ask them to ask you and win a chocolate or an ice cream for yourcorrect answer. Best of luck.

    12/90

These questions are to be answered quickly, say within 5 seconds. Dont use paperand pen. Better option is to request somebody to ask you, and you reply as quicklyas possible.

ALL ABOUT ORANGES, APPLES AND CATS:

    1. There are 6 oranges in a basket and you have taken two from it. How manywill remain with you?

    2. There are 6 oranges in a basket. If I take 3 and give one to my friend from it,how many will be there in the basket?

    3. There are 6 oranges in a basket. If I take 3 and give one to my friend fromthem, how many will be there in the basket.

    4. If one orange and two apples cost 5 rupees, and one apple and two oranges

cost 4 rupees, then how much does two oranges and one apple cost.5. Can you solve the question? If one orange and one apple costs one rupee,

how much two apples and two oranges do cost?

    6. Answer these questions purely in arithmetic sense. If two cats can kill two ratsin two minutes, then how much time will it take for one cat to kill one rat?

    7. If two cats can kill two rats in two minutes, then how much time will it takefor one thousand cats to kill one thousand rats?

    8. If two cats can kill two rats in two minutes, then how much time will it takefor one cat to kill two rats?

    SIMPLE ARTIMATIC:

    9. If 8 people eat 8 kilos of rice in 8 days, how many kilos 2 people eat in 2days?

    10. If 4 people eat 4 kilos of rice in 4 days, how many kilos does a person eat in 1day?

    11. Add 40 to 1000. Then add another 1000. Now add 30, and another 1000. Nowadd 20 to it. And add another 1000. Now add 10. What is the total?

    12. The total cost of a sari and a blouse for 11/-. The cost of the sari is 10/- morethan the blouse. What is the cost of the blouse?

    13. Divide 20 by half and add 10. What is the total?

    CONFUSING BIRTHDAYS:

    14. How many birthdays have you celebrated so far?

    15. Lava celebrated his birthday, but his twin brother Kusa who was born few hourlater, has not. Why?

    16. Lava and Kusa are twins, born with six hours difference. One day Kusacelebrated his birthday; his twin brother Lav celebrated his birthday two dayslater. How?

    17. Go through the two previous questions. It may be easy to answer them. Buthere is a more complicated question. 6 hours after Lavs birth, his mothergave birth to Kus. Kus has celebrated his birthday; after one day his elderbrother Lav celebrated it. How? How can an older brother celebrate hisbirthday one day afterhis younger one? Dont go to logical medical argumentthat the boy who comes first out of the womb is the junior, as the child in thewomb is conceived first and hence the senior. We expect more logical answerthan that. The concept of leap year does not arise here.

    18. Ram is twice as old as Krishna will be, when Kamala is as old as Ram is now.Who is the oldest and youngest among the three?

    19. Two days ago I was 8 and next year, I will be 11. How is it possible?

    20. There are some chickens and rabbits in a cage. The count is: 72 headsand 200 feet. How many are the chickens and rabbits?

    26. If somebody offers, what currency do you prefer to have between these two,

old ten rupee note, or new one?27. You are given a match-box and two candles of equal size, which

can burn 1 hour each. You have to measure 90 minutes withthese candles. (There is no scale or clock). How do you do?

    The geographical intelligence:

    28. If you are facing east, which side is Australia? Back / Front / Left / Right?Between back and left? Between back and right? Between right and front? /Between left and front?

    29. If you are facing east, which side are Himalayas?

    30. If you are facing west, which side is Arabian Sea?

    31. If you are facing north, which side is Sri Lanka?

    32. If you are facing south, which side is Africa?

    33. This is a highly intelligent question, testing your thinking beyond barriers. Thisquestion was asked in a MNC interview for a top executive post. There are 10crows picking up grain on a floor. One is killed with a pistol. How many willremain? Choose the answer from the following four: A. None. B. One. C. Nine.D. One or more than one.

    34. A woman working in a circus company buys a new pair of high-healshoes, goes to work, and dies. Give two alternative reasons.

    36. A farmer is taking a fox, a chicken, and a bag of grain home. He mustcross a river, but he's only allowed to take one item across the bridgewith them at a time. If the fox is left alone with the chicken, the foxwill eat the chicken. If the chicken is left alone with the grain, thechicken will eat the grain. How can the farmer cross the river withoutany of his possessions being eaten? Hint: you can have as many tripsas you can, but make them minimum.

    37. This question tests your coherent conjecture and deductions. Closeyour eyes, imagine the situation, enter into the shoes of each of thethree persons, draw conclusions and then the answer surfaces: Threemen are captured by cannibals in a jungle. The men are given onechance to escape with their lives. The men are buried one after other

in such a way that the last man can see the backs of the front two, themiddle man can see the back of the front man, and the front mancan't see anybody. (

    DEVELOPING MATHEMATICAL

    SKILLS

All about simple maths and interesting cricket:

    40. I wanted to gamble in a match between India and England. The odds were 2:1i.e., if I bet 100 on India, I get 200 more. If I bet 100 on England I get 100more. If I invest RS. 50 each on both the countries and if India wins I gain

100 rupees on India and loose 50 on England. Hence my total profit would beRS. 50/- (+100-50). But if England wins, there would be neither profit nor loss(-50+50). What would be the safest bet for me to get the maximum profit? How much I should bet on India and England so that I get maximum amount, irrespective of which country wins.

    41. At a cricket betting, a fortune- teller said, For ten rupees I will tell you thescores. You can bet. If my prediction goes wrong, I would give you 1000/- ascompensation. Shall I have to take the offer?

    42. Think before arriving at the final answer. It is not as simple as it appears tobe. Dont rush to find out from the answer sheet: in a fifty over one-dayinternational, 49.4 balls are over. Last two balls are remaining. Seven runs towin, two batsmen are at 94 runs each. The team won and both batsmen madecenturies. How could it be possible? Dont think of a no-ball, because, on no-

ball, if the batsman hits it adds 7 (seven) runs to the team score and it wins. Then how the runner also gets 100 runs? This puzzle is more complicated thanwhat you think.

    43. In an annual state tournament 5 cricket teams participate. Thechampion team is chosen for this tournament by the usual eliminationscheme. That is, the 5 teams are divided into pairs, and the two teamsof each pair play against each other. The loser of each pair iseliminated, and the remaining teams are paired up again, etc. Howmany games must be played to determine a champion?

    44. In the above competition, if the participating teams are 50, then howmany games are to be played?

    45. Three men go to a Lodge. The receptionist said the rent is 30. So they paid 10each. The receptionist realised that the rent is 25 only. He sent back throughthe boy RS. 5. They paid RS. 2/- as tip and kept one rupee each withthemselves. That means... each has paid RS. 9/- to the hotelier, amounting to

    27. The boy kept 2 with him. Total: 29. Where the remaining one rupee hasgone?

    46. A 16 meters cable is attached to two 15 meters high pillars. Atits lowest point, the cable hangs 7 meters above the ground.

How far are the two pillars apart?

    47. Which of these numbers 2 can evenly divide? 5., 6., 7., 8.

    48. This is an interesting question believed to be prepared by Mathematic wizardSakuntala Devi. If a clock takes two seconds to strike two bells, how muchtime will it take to strike three bells?

    49. If a clock takes 5 seconds to strike 5 O clock, how long will it take to strike 10Oclock?

    50. At 6'o a clock ticks 6 times. The time between first and last ticks is 30 seconds. How long does it tick at 12'o.

    WAIT AND WEIGHT

    51. This is a simple question. Never undermine your capacity. You can do it. Staycalm and composed. Try to work out. You have 12 gold coins of same weight, except one, which is of less weight. How can you find it? You can use the

balance machine three times only. You have a perfectly balanced scale. The scale only tells you which side weighs more compared to the otherside. Use only the twelve coins and no other weights.

    52. Go through the previous question about gold coins. Because one of it is of lessweight, you may have solved it easily. But if one of it is of different weight(you dont know whether the culprit coin is of more weight or less weight)

  • 7/27/2019 Puzzles Final Book (1)

    19/90

then the question becomes more complicated. Think whether you can solve it.If not, see the answer. If you are confused with the answer also, then go tothe next question and try to understand and answer it. Revert back to thisquestion again, to understand the technique. Dont leave it frustrated.

    53. A king employed 100 artisans to make gold toys of 10 grams each, to bepresented to all the children in his kingdom. Per day each artisan producedaround ten toys and after a month, the king new that one of the artisans ischeating by using only 9 grams and swindling 1 gram per toy. The king has aweighing machine. But weighing only once, can he find the culprit?

    54. This question is one of the best to test your reasoning skill. This can be donewith a computer or without it. A computer may take some time to derive atthe answer. They say Ramanujam, the mathematic wizard could calculate theanswer in 10 minutes in computer-way. He could also do it in few seconds in a

more sensible way. Dont rush for the answer. Think. Use your commonsense.A young girl was walking towards a shakti temple at 3 km per hour. Ramcrossed her on a motorcycle, at a speed that is 20 times more than her. Hewanted to give lift to her, but could not dare. He travelled for 3 minutes. Onreaching the temple and seeing Goddess Shakti, he got courage and returned.By this time the girl walked further towards the temple. He saw her but againhe was not courageous. He went back to the temple, got inspired and againreturned. The process continued. In the final trip, he went inside the templeand prayed Goddess Shakti Please give me courage. The girl, havingreached the temple, said from behind, Shakthi is not there in that stone. It isin you. Discover it. Now the question is, how much distance did Ram travel intotal?

    55. A had 5 chapattis, B 3 and C nil. They all ate equallyand C paid RS. 8/- as

    his share to them. How much A and B should get for their share of sacrifice?Choose from the 4 answers: A5, B3 / A7, B1 / A4, B4 / not these three.

    56. Suppose a=b. Find out where (in which step) the mistake has taken place?Step one: if a=b, then a=ab. Step two: Deduct b from both: (a - b) =(ab - b). Step three: (a + b) (a - b) = b (a - b). Step four: Deduct (a-b) fromboth: a + b= b. How is this possible? In which step lies the mistake?

    57. Here is an excellent puzzle to test your creative and reasoning skills. The fivepandavas: Dharma Raja, Bheema, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva weresleeping in the Red-wax house and their enemies burnt it. The pandavas wantto escape through a tunnel. Only two people can go through the tunnel at onetime. Moreover, it is totally dark and without a torch they cannot proceed. Itmeans, two people should go out, and then one has to take the lamp insideand bring another one out. Total 4 trips. It would take for Nakula andSahadeva 5 minutes and Arjuna 10 minutes to come out. Bheema would take20 and Dharma 25 minutes respectively to come through the tunnel as one ishefty and another is old. This is an arithmetical problem and has no twists.

Just calculate who should accompany whom first and go back to bring thesecond one, so that all the five can come back as early as possible. How muchtime it would take?

    58. In the above question, suppose they came to know that the cave is going tocollapse exactly after 60 minutes. They have to return back within the saidtime. If Nakula takes the entire responsibility of bringing all the other four, itwould take 80 minutes in total (if this is what you worked out in previousquestion). But there is a way to make it in 60 minutes. How?

    59. If you are asked to find out the value of A, when A+A= A x A, you wouldanswer that A = 2, as 2 + 2=2 x 2. Taking this as an example, find out thedifferent values of a, b, c, if a + b + c = a x b x c.

    60. Intellectual endurance is the staying power, the capacity to persist, without

getting distracted. At one point your brain ceases to cooperate, but dont stop.Take a few minutes rest and start again. This is one way of developingintellectual endurance. Take a single digit number and a three digit numberof your choice... For example, suppose the numbers are: 8 and 156, writedown on a paper 8-156. Go on adding 13 to the first number (8) and deduct 7from the later (156). Do it simultaneously (Here is the example. your firstnumber is 8 - 156. Hence your second number would be 21-149, third 34-142etc). At the end... what are your final figures when you reach the single digitanswer on the right hand side? Dont jump to calculate end figures, do it stepby step to test your patience.

    61. A fish weighs 2 kilos plus half of its weight. What is the weight of the fish?

    62. A milkmaid adds 4 litres of water to 2 litres of milk, before distribution. Bymistake she added 2 litres water to 4 litres of milk. How much more water has

she to add to rectify her mistake?63. A painter should have a total 6 litres of paint and is supposed to mix 4 litres of

    77. The answer is 18. Assume that the total number of bullets is: A. Eachfriend had A/3 bullets. After shooting the bullets each had A/34 bullets. In total theyhave remaining 3(A/3-4) bullets. According to the question this is equal to 1/3A. Itmeans 3(A/3-4) =A/3. It works out to A-1/3A=12 i.e. A= 18. There is an alternativework-out. Suppose the total bullets are A. spent bullets are 12, which is equal to 1/3 rd

of the total bullets. Hence the equation is A-12 = 1/3A. When simplified, it would be3A-36= A. Hence A = 12.

In X hours, totalthick candle burnt = XL/6. In X hours, thin candle burnt = XL/4.After X hours, totalthick candle remaining = L - XL/6. After X hours, total thin candle remaining = L -XL/4. Also, it is given that the thick candle was twice as long as the thin one when he

    finally went to sleep. (L - XL/6) = 2(L - XL/4) which works out to (6 - X)/6 = (4 - X)/2which means (6 - X) = 3(4 - X) that leads to 6 - X = 12 - 3X and hence 2X = 6 i.e. X= 3. Hence, he studied for 3 hours i.e. 180 minutes in candle light.

Then it isunderstood that his brother (who is a truth teller) certainly says no and that is thetruth i.e., the road does not lead to the village. Step II: Suppose the person whom youare asking is the truth-teller and your are asking him what his brother would say, hereplies yes, it is understood that the liar also says yes. When the liar says yes, which means obviously the road does not lead to the village. Thus ... in any case... forany yes answer, the road does not lead to your destination and vice versa.
