FROM THE CYV DIRECTOR'S DESK

• Please have our Transportation Coordinator schedule any Medi-cal Appointments that require transportation to the appointment.

• Guest meal tickets can be purchased in the office for $5 each.

• Please call 24 hours ahead if you would like to have any guests dine with us – so we can be sure to cook enough.

• Dr. Martin (Podiatrist) will be here on Tuesday, February 11th. He will be at Courtyard Estates in the morning and Courtyard Village in the afternoon.

How Do I Pay for Senior Care?

• Veterans Aid & Attendance. If you or your spouse served in the military during active duty, you may qualify for this monthly benefit, which can help cover in-home, assisted living or nursing home care.

• Social Security. When you choose to begin drawing on these benefits can make a big difference in your financial plan. Learn more about how to plan what’s best for your scenario.

• Insurance Policies. Life insurance, long-term care insurance, long-term care annuities and hybrid policies can be used to provide a regular stipend that can go a long way toward covering expenses for everything from adult day care to skilled nursing.

• Bridge Loans. These programs can help homeowners quicken their cash flow when they need it most, regardless of the real estate outlook of their local market or readiness to put a house up for sale.

• Reverse Mortgages. Another way to unlock home equity, reverse mortgages provide a way for seniors to remain in their homes while generating funds for their care. There are advantages and disadvantages to this.

It’s a question many aging Americans struggle with. Many families may need to look beyond traditional ways of financing their golden years. These resources are suggestions that can help pay for senior care:

Gratitude | Encouragement | Growth | Respect | Collaboration | Kindness

While thinking about my initial Senior Gazette article as the new Director of Courtyard Village, I decided to start by expressing my sincere gratitude for all the support and encouragement that each of you and your families have provided during my transition into this role. I’d also like to thank Laura Heinrich, our former Director, for sharing her expertise with us. As our community

continues to grow and take positive steps forward, I am certain that we’re poised and ready for meaningful improvement with a very bright and active future!

In keeping with our Petersen Health Care Mission Statement: “We are committed to providing a homelike envi-ronment where the individuality of each person is recognized, encouraged, and respected”. It is my hope that everyone will regularly attend our scheduled meetings as Courtyard Village Tenants, Villa Owners, and Staff Members to ensure that your ideas are shared, and solutions developed. Together, our collaborative efforts will build a community that offers a fulfilling lifestyle for everyone.

Please be assured that my goal for our community is that we’ll be the best place to live with a kind, fun, and engaging community culture. My door is always open, and my phone is always on (please leave a voice mail if I am in a meeting).

Feel free to call anytime. Office: 309-853-4044 or Cell 309-852-4024

Courtyard Estates Red Velvet Thumbprint

Cookies

DirectionsHeat oven to 350°F. Line cookie sheet with cooking parchment paper.

In large bowl, beat butter and sugar with electric mixer on medium speed about 2 minutes or until creamy. Stir in egg, food coloring and vanilla until well blended. On low speed, beat in flour, cocoa and salt until blended.

Shape dough into 1-inch balls. On cookie sheets, place balls 2 inches apart. Press thumb into center of each cookie to make indentation, but do not press all the way to the cookie sheet.

Bake 12 minutes or until set. Cool 2 minutes; quickly remake indentations with end of wooden spoon, if necessary. Remove from cookie sheet to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 10 minutes.

In small microwavable bowl, microwave white baking chips uncovered on High 30 to 50 seconds, stirring once, until softened and chips can be stirred smooth. Spoon melted chips into resealable food-storage plastic bag; seal bag. Cut off tiny corner of bag. Twist bag above melted chips. Squeeze bag to fill each thumbprint cookie. Let stand until set.

Ingredients1 cup butter, softened 1 cup sugar 1 egg 4 teaspoons red food color 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

3 tablespoons unsweetened baking cocoa 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 bag (11 oz) white vanilla baking chips (about 2 cups)

Cardiac health deals with the circulatory system. The circulatory system comprises the heart and blood vessels. It carries nutrients and oxygen to the tissues of the body and removes carbon dioxide and other wastes from them. Common cardiovascular diseases include:

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)Atherosclerosis is a condition in which a material called plaque builds up on the inner walls of the arteries. This can happen in any artery, including the coronary arteries. The coronary arteries carry oxygen-rich blood to your heart. When atherosclerosis affects the coronary arteries, the condition is called coronary artery disease (CAD).

Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction/MI)Acute myocardial infarction (AMI), commonly known as a heart attack, is the interruption of blood supply to part of the heart, causing some heart muscle cells to die. It is most commonly due to occlusion (blockage) of a coronary artery following the rupture of a vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque, which is an unstable collection of lipids (fatty acids) and white blood cells (especially macrophages) in the wall of an artery. The most common symptom of a heart attack in both men and women is some type of pain, pressure or discomfort in the chest.

EXERCISE & HEART HEALTH

EXERCISE AND CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTHBeing physically active is important to prevent heart disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. To improve overall cardiovascular health, we suggest at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise (or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity). Thirty minutes a day, five times a week is an easy goal to remember. You will also experience benefits even if you divide your time into two or three segments of 10 to 15 minutes per day.

Physical activity is anything that makes you move your body and burn calories. This includes things like climbing stairs or playing sports. Aerobic exercises benefit your heart, and include walking, jogging, swimming or biking. Strength and stretching exercises are best for overall stamina and flexibility.

The simplest, positive change you can make to effectively improve your heart health is to start walking. It’s enjoyable, free, easy, social and great exercise. A walking program is flexible and boasts high success rates because people can stick with it. It’s easy for walking to become a regular and satisfying part of life.
