03 3 Color Cube

Puzzle Goal: Make a red cube.

Make a yellow cube.

Make a blue cube.

Materials:

Wood - beech

Classification:

Put together

Notes:

The cube is dissected into 24 pieces, in a way that the total surface area is three times the surface of the cube; so it is possible to make 3 different colored cubes with the pieces. Other possible patterns are shown on the solution page.

04 3H=6T

Puzzle Goal: 1) Fit both types of pieces into the small box, (1/8 of the large box).

2) Put all nine pieces into the large box.

3) Put all nine pieces into the large box so that pieces meet face to face, edge to edge, and vertex to vertex, and there is no gap between pieces.

Materials:

Wood (piece), acrylic (box)

Classification:

3D Assembly

Notes:

The two puzzle pieces H (Hexagonal Bipyramid) and T (Triangular Antiprismoid) are imaginary cubes, i.e., objects which have square projections in three orthogonal directions just as the cube. H and T also form a tiling of 3D space.

07 Arrow Blocks

Puzzle Goal: Starting from the position shown, restore the dark arrow, and leave space so that the light arrowhead may also be restored.

Materials:

Box - Indian rosewood, pieces - maple, arrows: yellowheart and Brazilian blackwood

Classification:

Sequential movement

Notes:

The puzzle resembles Bill Cutler's Slide-Blocked Sliding Block Puzzle, but is a completely different concept.

Only when restarting the puzzle are you allowed to remove the cover of the frame and freely rearrange the pieces to the starting position (shown below, and with detail on solution page).

07 Arrow Blocks

Puzzle Solution:

Starting configuration:

The puzzle cannot be solved normally. Instead, the pieces must first be removed from the box (requiring 21 sliding moves), reassembled into a solution-compatible configuration, then 25 more moves to get to the solution.

08 Bare Bones

Puzzle Goal: Navigate the maze ball from the starting position at the entrance ring to the treasure position at the goal ring, and then back again.

Materials:

Laser sintered nylon, enamel paints

Classification:

Maze and Route/Dexterity

Notes:

Walls of a conventional 3D maze are replaced with rods. Many rods have been removed, and distracting rods added. A plastic case forms the outer walls so that the core of the maze becomes more visible.

08 Bare Bones

Puzzle Solution:

1. Open the case and remove the ball - The case is made of two “U” shaped parts. To open the case, locate the face of the maze that the entrance ring is on. Grip the edges of this face with the tips of the fingers and thumb of one hand, and grip the opposite side using your other hand. Gently pull these opposite faces away from each other to open the case. Pull the case open about ¾ of the way, so the top and bottom are still connected. When the maze is opened the ball will usually fall right out, or fall out with a few turns and shakes.

2. Position the maze ball in the entrance ring inside maze to begin the primary challenge - Turn the case so that the entrance ring is on the bottom. You then slide the maze up a little and place the ball under the entrance ring. Then slide the maze back down so the ring is around the ball. Gently close the case and you are ready to start. If you slide the maze out of the case completely, make sure to reinsert it with the entrance ring on the bottom of one of the “U” shaped case halves. This way people will know which face of the cube to grip to open it.

3. Navigate the ball to the goal ring - To solve the maze the ball is moved in amounts equal to the width of the cells in the maze, where the maze is 7 cells height, wide and deep. The directions for movement are abbreviated as follows: Right (R), Left (L), Up (U), Down (D), Towards you (T), Away from you (A).

For this solution the maze is first oriented by rotating it so that the entrance ring is on the side facing you, and in the lower right corner of this face. Do this while keeping the ball in the corner of the cube at the entrance ring. The solution is then the following list of directional movements from this starting position to the goal:

LAURAUULADARDDALULLTDLLUUAURTRTUUAALLTDTTRDDLTDDTRRAUUTULLUUARRRDRTURAALAARDADLL

As you can see from the list of moves in the solution, there is no special trick involved in solving the maze, just a sequence of moves is needed. However the challenge is in figuring out how to explore this new type of maze and navigate the ball to desired path segments while not getting lost due to dead ends and other obstacles.

4. Secondary Challenge Solution - To navigate from the exit to the entrance, follow the list of moves above in reverse, and do each move in the opposite direction. If the ball is not currently at the goal ring then open the case and position the ball there similarly to how this is done in steps 1 and 2 for the entrance ring.

14 BurrBlock

Puzzle Solution: BurrBlock solution: 45 steps are needed to remove the 4 key pieces because they are interlocked together with an internal sliding pin. Each key piece will shift upward 1 unit by adjusting the 4 closest control pieces in a lock picking fashion (apply upward pressure on a key piece and adjust the 4 control pieces at the same corner outward ¼ unit feeling for the notches to click into place and allowing the key piece to move upward).

The frame is also difficult to take apart, needing 15 non-obvious steps before it comes apart.
