“Look around the room and tell me if you can find your boss” – a question Simpson Strong-Tie Chairman Barclay Simpson posed at the company’s International Sales Meeting nearly 12 years ago. “Have you located him yet?” “WRONG,” said Barc. “Your boss is not in this room; your boss is the customer. So as long as you always treat your customer like he or she is your boss, this company will always be successful.” A lot of things have changed over the past few years, but one thing has remained the same: we are a customer-focused company whose people always put their customers first.

Research and testing is one of the Simpson Strong-Tie customer pillars. The company works with industry and academia all across the country to help advance building science and technology. Last October, the company celebrated the grand opening of the Simpson Strong-Tie® Materials Demonstration Lab at Cal Poly University’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design. This new 7,000-square-foot facility provides a hands-on learning environment so students can build and test full-scale models. The lab’s highly specialized equipment can test a structure’s ability to resist earthquakes, high winds and other natural disasters. Full-scale structural components are tested using the lab’s seismic shake table and cyclic/static test frame.

The North American economy needs a strong manufacturing base to be viable and create long-term wealth for customers, employees, shareholders and society. To revitalize our industries, there is a strong consensus that a

relocation of manufacturing enterprises to North America over the long term is essential. This revitalization; however, must also be earned through our organizational effectiveness as a whole.

North American firms, like Cendrex, must constantly improve the products and services they offer. Their flexibility and ability to rapidly manufacture products customers need and their skill at producing non-standard products easily and efficiently are paramount to success. In recent years Cendrex has taken up the challenge of operational efficiency by adopting a culture of continuous improvement known as Kaizen. This cycle of “continuous improvement” supports our commitment to loyalty, not only to our customers, but to our employees, shareholders and society as well.

Cendrex customers benefit from the collaboration of a North American company that can meet their demands while respecting the fundamental values on which our society was built. The support offered to specificators through our LEED program, the availability of the exclusive Cendrex CTR Contour Door, a 5 day turn-around period for delivery of doors with special dimensions and 10 days for non-standard doors, are only some examples of how Cendrex strives to help customers grow their businesses and improve their profits.

Cendrex employees enjoy a clean and safe working environment where they can find fulfillment through their contributions to improvement while being treated respectfully and equitably.

Shareholders, myself included, are presented with an exciting, long-term project. Our approach and philosophy will solidify the foundation of the company and generates a

sufficient level of profitability to ensure its viability.

To North American society, Cendrex is a proud partner that creates jobs and contributes to the enrichment of sustainable development by limiting its environmental footprint.

We look forward to bringing added value to your organization and being an integral part of the rebirth of the North American manufacturing sector.

BRONZE SPONSORKarp Associates, Inc., is a visionary and leader in the Access Door Industry. Forward thinking has been an integral part of Karp’s success dating back to the late sixties, when Karp changed its strategic direction from a job shop to access door manufacturer. Then in the 1970’s, Karp again had the foresight to expand

sales from a local level to a national platform. And a decade later, Karp became a leader in the utilization of “state of the art” technology to produce a superior access door, using such equipment as robotics, computerized automated shear and forming equipment, automated paint and conveyor systems, coil lines, custom welding equipment and sophisticated integrated computer systems.

Equally as important as our commitment to high-grade constructed products is our commitment and dedication to our distribution partners. Karp’s extensive line of drywall access doors, UL fire rated access doors and plaster access doors are specified more than any other access door in the industry. This directly translates into demand for our distribution partners. And Karp continues to build upon on our existing product line to bring new access doors to market which will create new opportunities for our partners.

We realize that the success of our organization depends on the loyal relationships with our dealers that we’ve established over the years. Karp takes pride in our dealer relationships; we support them fully, and do not sell direct to the end user. Our employees will work hard to develop the same positive relationships with our new Sphere 1 member partners.

LarryMass, Vice President of Karp Associates, Inc. is the primary contact for Sphere 1 members. For the past 10 years, Larry has played a key role in continuing Karp’s mission to be the number one provider of quality access doors in the country. Ralph Thompson Wright, businessman and hardworking community activist, died unexpectedly December 27, 2010 in Sarasota, Florida. Ralph was born in Erie on May 9, 1938. Education was important to Ralph. He graduated from Strong Vincent High School, attained a B.A. in economics from Haverford College, and

an M.B.A. in marketing, with high honors, from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined Reed Manufacturing and laid the groundwork for the future of the Erie pipe tool manufacturer, becoming President in 1982. Ralph received the 1996 ACES Outstanding Citizen Award for business success and for providing jobs. Ralph had a longtime interest in community education and good government. In the early 1970’s, he chaired a citizen committee to help the Erie school district cut costs and innovate education. A highlight of Ralph’s good government volunteer work was serving as Vice-Chairman of Partners Program for executives. Ralph analyzed the numbers; relentlessly focused on effective results; delivered documented, detailed strategies; and planned cost cutting programs and efficient operations for all Erie city departments.

Many Partners recommendations were adopted, and helped result in the City’s bond rating improving from junk status to investment grade. Ralph received the United Way Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award for a lifetime of community service in 1999. He was an effective community catalyst due to his original thinking, tremendous energy, and strong work ethic. Since retiring in 2003, Ralph raised funds for the renovation of First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant and continued to advocate for good government. He enjoyed travel, attendance of art performances, lectures, and classes. Ralph never stopped learning. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Linda Kelso Wright and sister Dorothy Higby. Ralph is survived by his wife Bonnie, son and daughter-in-law Scott Wright and Carla Wright Picardo and grandson Gridley; son Mark Wright and fiancée Stephanie Franz; sister Nancy Hoey and brother Ross Wright. Over the last 30 years no construction tool innovation has returned more on its investment than professional laser alignment tools. Today’s laser tools reduce compounding errors and time consuming labor. Since the 1980’s there has been an evolution from expensive and cumbersome rotary lasers to smaller, portable hand-held rotaries, point-to-point and line lasers. Now hybrid tools combining laser points and lines are available. The majority of Sphere 1 end user customers are using lasers today or will be eventually.

that was subjected to simulated earthquake ground motions on Japan’s E-Defense (Earth-Defense) shake table. The shake table was used to recreate a series of earthquakes based on the 1994 Northridge, California, earthquake – a 6.7 magnitude quake. The seismic intensity on the final and strongest test was increased to 180% of Northridge, roughly a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The building successfully averted major structural damage and proved that a relatively small upfront investment in proper design could avert millions of dollars in repairs after a major seismic event. This national agreement includes employee volunteer time to help with the building of Habitat homes. Given the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Simpson Strong-Tie committed $25,000 to support the relief efforts and is matching all employees’ donations dollar for dollar.

Whether it’s using research and testing to develop new products that improve the building industry, offering educational workshops to customers or lending support to charitable causes, Simpson Strong-Tie continues to look for opportunities to advance the industry and add value to its customers. If there is anything we can do to better serve you, please let us know.

AsanationalsponsorofHabitatforHumanity,Simpson Strong-Tie often volunteers on local house builds.
