PUT IN WORK WHILE WALKING
This genre includes doing a productive task while walking, such as planning your day, taking a call, reflecting over a decision
Themes
• The people I interviewed were students• All of them agreed they were busy• They all walked in chunks that added up to 30
minutes• They all took the necessity of walking and turned
it into an opportunity to PUT IN WORK• Only two took the necessity to PUT IN WORK and
made it an opportunity for walking. The third extended existing walks to PUT IN MORE WORK
One
• One is a student who works between many labs• On any day, One is caught rushing between the labs, as
each lab has unique functions• Initially, One just hurried between the various labs
without thought, but then started structuring each lab visit between walks
• Now One is less hurried during walks because she can PUT IN WORK to make her lab time more efficient
• One will even extend a walk and PUT IN MORE WORK if she hasn’t finished planning
Two
• Two doesn’t particularly like sitting still, so she takes walks to help ease her anxiety
• Two had organization problems (forgetting homework, etc.)
• When TWO became anxious and needed a walk, she started planning ways in which to make her day less stressful
• Now she intentionally walks when she needs to PUT IN WORK and plan her day
Three
• Three doesn’t like talking on the phone, but it’s necessary
• Three gets poor reception in his apartment, and must take all calls outside
• Three started walking while handling calls, and realized how easy it was to do both
• Now Three takes walks on most calls, and plans walks as an opportunity to PUT IN WORK
