Look out for the adver tising pieces within future editions of industry trade journals.

Pages 13 & 14 see us include some interesting facts pertaining to our wider range of products used throughout each of the industries we are involved in. We hope you fi nd this interesting.

July will see JG launch two new additions to our Underfl oor Heating product range - fi rstly an overfi t transition board to complement the current overfi t fl oor solution and our JG Aura Wireless TRV – details of which can be found on pages 5 & 6.

We are extremely excited about the potential of the JG Aura TRV – it is a fantastic product and for a reasonable investment homeowners can introduce ‘zoned’ control of radiator circuits, allowing for signifi cant energy savings.

As always a big thank you to all of our customers both existing and new, your business is greatly appreciated.

I hope you enjoy reading our newsletter.

WELCOME TO THE MARCH EDITION OF ‘THE PUSH-FIT PEOPLE’.

The year is very much in full swing and once again we fi nd ourselves incredibly busy across all areas of the business, with sales being particularly strong.

Regardless of one’s political allegiance let’s hope the recent election result presents economic

stability moving forward and has a positive impact within our market sector.

One thing each party was aligned on is their recognition and plans to address the countries shortage of new homes. Let’s hope the Government can mobilise and deliver their housing strategy at a reasonable pace and thus stimulating growth in new build and RMI.

Aligned to our BSB – British Superbike Team Sponsorship we are delighted to have launched our latest JG Layfl at pipe

Page 4: PUSH-FIT PEOPLE...WELCOME TO THE MARCH EDITION OF ‘THE PUSH-FIT PEOPLE’. The year is very much in full swing and once again we fi nd ourselves incredibly busy across all areas

We are delighted to announce the market launch of our new wireless thermostatic radiator valve controller - JG Aura TRV, which has been designed to effi ciently regulate the hot water to each radiator in the house.

Available for purchase 1st July 2015, the JG Aura Wireless TRV simply replaces the manual standard radiator valve head and in doing so, opens up new possibilities for energy saving. The new valves are controlled wirelessly by a JG Aura thermostat in every room and can send a signal to the JG Aura Network that would then turn the boiler off when a desired room temperature has been reached.

The system has been developed not just for new-build projects, but it also allows for an existing radiator system to be turned into a smart network in a matter of hours and with no wet plumbing work necessary.

The JG Aura Wireless TRV can be combined with underfl oor heating systems and is very simple to install. Every installation will require a JG Aura Wireless Controlling Thermostat, JG Aura Boiler Receiver and a JG Aura Coordinator.

The Wireless TRV system can be internet enabled by installing a JG Aura Hub.

Full control is right in the palm of your hand with the online JG Aura App. Available for iOS, Android and Windows users, the app allows you to remotely control your JG Aura TRV’s from anywhere - using a smartphone, PC or a tablet as long as you have access to the internet.

This tight control offers great energy saving potential as the right zones are heated at the right time and at the desired temperature.

WOULD YOU ONLY HAVE ONE LIGHT SWITCH TO TURN ON ALL THE LIGHTS IN YOUR HOUSE?

One way to look at heating control effi ciency is through comparison to the way we light our homes. If homes had one light switch to universally control the lighting across the building, to essentially switch the whole system on or off, it would seem out of the ordinary and

contribute to an expensive energy bill. Yet, this is how the majority of households control heating in the UK, resulting in people both spending unnecessary money and contributing to high energy usage.

Planning a building or home to have a zonal heating control system allows each room to have its heating turned on or off at different times, much like the way we switch our lights on and off. This allows heat to only be distributed as and when it is needed, meaning heating patterns can be dictated by the householder’s lifestyle.

While traditional TRV systems can indeed be turned up and down, this process has to be manually undertaken meaning that the householder would have to wake up early to turn the desired rooms up or down and wouldn’t have the option to plan for heating to change for when getting home from work. The practicalities of changing the heating patterns throughout the day using ordinary TRV systems is questionable as conventional TRV’s have no means of turning the boiler on or off, meaning the boiler is left running for long periods of time.

JG Aura TRV’s technology allows for a more intelligent remote radiator control, which also determines when the boiler is actually on or off. This essentially allows for better management of the energy used, also leading to a signifi cant reduction in the heating costs incurred.

PUSH-FIT COVER STORY

Page 5: PUSH-FIT PEOPLE...WELCOME TO THE MARCH EDITION OF ‘THE PUSH-FIT PEOPLE’. The year is very much in full swing and once again we fi nd ourselves incredibly busy across all areas

With billions of JG push-fit fittings currently in

use around the world, their adaptability makes

them an integral par t of many innovative devices

including diverse products such as ar tificial ski

slope lubrication equipment, computer chip cooling

systems, ATM’s (cash machines), water purification

providing potable water for third world areas and

innovative head cooling systems applied to patients

before and after chemotherapy.

This adaptability is why JG Speedfi t technology is

recognised by numerous manufacturers as one of the

best original equipment products on the market, with

virtually unlimited scope of application.

Among these companies is ADEY Professional

Heating Solutions - the UK’s leading manufacturer of

magnetic fi lters for the maintenance and protection

of central heating systems. ADEY has trusted John

Guest Speedfi t’s push-fi t technology to enhance their

magnetic fi lter performance by allowing installers to fi t

the product in less than a minute.

The MagnaClean Professional2 is the latest

revolutionary design to meet ADEY’s objective in

producing a world leading product that contributes

to more effi cient GCH systems. By collecting the

damaging black iron oxide sludge that builds up

in heating systems before it damages boilers, the

MagnaClean Professional2 has quickly become the

installers’ choice for system protection.

Chris Adey, founder and designer of this next

generation technology, envisioned his new product to

be of compact dimensions, deliver world class cleaning

effi ciency and be capable of getting installed in less than

half the time the existing products on the market were

allowing. In relation to the need for quicker installation

time ADEY made contact with John Guest to see how

the push-fi t technology could be best incorporated

into the outline design.

The design teams of both companies collaborated in

order to incorporate the JG Speedfi t 22mm cartridge

technology. The push-fi t concept avoids the need of

threaded ports offering easy tube connection and a

reduced envelope size, which meant it was ideal for the

new ADEY fi lter.

During early development stages, the engineering

teams had to identify the design elements that required

special attention, with JG Speedfi t’s team of experts

working very closely with ADEY on model proposals

to ensure cohesion with the design specifi cations.

The development phase gave rise to the potential

for Chris Adey’s introduction of a quick-release

trigger, which greatly enhances the ease of use

during maintenance. Both John Guest and

ADEY agreed from the outset that strict

quality control will be maintained in

order to produce the highest quality

product. All 22mm Cartridges

are being produced at our

UK manufacturing facility in

West Drayton.

Thanks to the utilisation

of JG Speedfi t’s unique

push-fi t technology,

ADEY’s magnetic fi lter

delivers a quick assembly

feature, which allows

the installation process

to be improved. Some

installations are taking

no longer than one minute to complete. On average,

installation time is now more than 85 per cent quicker

than the previous MagnaClean product indicating the

signifi cance of implementing push-fi t technology.

Roger Goodwin, Business Development Manager at

JG Speedfi t, said: “Working with ADEY and assisting

with the early design and development stage allowed

us to really understand the core of the product and

from this we were able to deliver the quick assembly

feature ultimately required for installation. This core

Engineering & Production work reiterates our position

of being a trusted supplier to OEM product around

the world, in a wide range of industries and shows our

push-fi t fi ttings can be found in many everyday uses.”

It’s been a pretty incredible start to the 2015 MCE British Superbike Championship for our JG Speedfi t Kawasaki team as rider James Ellison has taken three wins and a second place from the six opening races to lead the championship by eight points. Teammate James Westmoreland has struggled a little in the opening rounds, but kicked off his 2015 campaign at the last round at Oulton Park with a brace of points scoring rides in the incredibly diffi cult series. However, James is already making progress. Beginning at Donington Park on 6th April, Ellison won the very fi rst race of the year but was denied a chance to repeat that in the second race when a rare fault with the battery prevented the bike from starting. Moving on to Brands Hatch two weeks later, it was a momentous weekend as Ellison dominated throughout practice and qualifying, taking pole position with one of the fastest ever laps around the short Indy

Circuit before following it up with a stunning double in the two races.

The third round at Oulton Park saw the team continue their podium run as Ellison took second place in the second race, to lead the Championship whilst Westmoreland enjoyed his fi rst point scoring rides in both races.

We are wishing our JG Speedfi t Kawasaki team best of luck in the 2015 MCE British Superbike Championship and are looking forward to round 4, which will be taking place at Snetterton 300, Norfolk, 19th-21st June.

Q) ARE THE SAME THERMOSTATS USED FOR CONTROL OF UFH WIRING CENTRES, WIRELESS TRV’S AND WIRELESS RECEIVERS?

A) Yes, continuing the JG Aura principle of simplicity and versatility there is no need to purchase different types of thermostats for different product groups.

Q) IS IT EASY TO SET UP THE THERMOSTATS FOR THE TYPE REQUIRED?

A) Yes, when the thermostat is turned on for the fi rst time 2 menus will appear - S1 “What type of thermostat am I?” and S2 “What component am I talking to?”. Each menu will require the user to select 0, 1 or 2 depending on their requirements and press the tick on the bottom right of the thermostat to confi rm their selection. The whole process can be completed in a few seconds.

Another advantage of using the Zigbee protocol is that it enables a much easier set up. In traditional wireless systems, all of the individual components need pairing or binding together. In large systems this can be a complicated and time-consuming business. JG Aura removes the need for the installer to spend long hours doing this by building in Auto Pairing.

Q) CAN UFH WIRELESS WIRING CENTRES, WIRELESS TRV’S AND WIRELESS RECEIVERS BE USED IN ANY MIX?

A) Just about any mix of UFH and wireless radiator valves can be combined into a system. There can be a maximum of 9 JG Aura Wireless Wiring Centres, 1 Boiler receiver, 1 single room receiver and a maximum of 30 thermostats in a system.

Q) DO YOU HAVE TO USE THE WIRELESS BOILER RECEIVER?

A) If you are using wireless wiring centres then these have the built in option for hardwire boiler switching. If a wireless boiler switching is desired this can be achieved by using a wireless boiler receiver. If the wireless boiler receiver is used with one or more wiring centres there are no settings to be carried out by the installer, the JG Aura Coordinator will recognise the receiver is in place and automatically carry out the pairings.

If however JG Aura Wireless TRV’s are used, either as a radiator only system or combined with UFH, then the JG Aura wireless boiler receiver must be used. Otherwise the TRV will be opened and closed by the thermostat but there will be no boiler fi ring.

MADE IN BRITAINFLYING THE FLAG,WHAT DOES ‘MADE IN BRITAIN’ REALLY MEAN?

The statement ‘Made in Britain’ holds a cer tain gravitas. These three simple words provide many with reassurance on quality, durability and reliability. British products, whatever the sector, have long been recognised as a reliable option for many and in recent years we have seen a trend in customers prioritising quality rather than simply going for the cheapest alternative. However, this statement can be misused and misleading, especially if you dig deeper into the claim of a product being made here in Britain – all is not what it seems.

As an employee of John Guest for 37 years, I have had to ensure that each manufactured product within the facility in West Drayton meets the highest British standards of quality and that we remain innovative, reliable and, most of all, honest with our customers. For over 50 years John Guest has been a UK manufacturer, with its pipe connectors and coils of tubing all manufactured at its UK base. Our reputation is based on our ability to produce consistent high quality products and provide an on-going commitment to value engineering and development. This statement can be backed by our association with the British Standards Institute Kitemark (BSI).

BRITISH STANDARDS = BRITISH QUALITY

The Kitemark is one of the most recognised symbols of quality and safety and offers true value to consumers and businesses.

A conformity cer tification, the BSI Kitemark was originally only used in the UK, but is now recognised throughout the world as a mark of

quality. One of the countr y’s oldest and trusted cer tification marks, the Kitemark came into being after the 1950s and 1960s saw numerous sectors flooded with consumer goods, many of dubious quality. The BSI gradually began to introduce standards and accreditation to UK products that met its high criteria and now it is used as an aid to those purchasing or specifying, with the Kitemark providing unrivalled reassurance globally.

With this in mind it is crucial that those seeking UK made products look for this symbol. Not only will it tell them that the product is manufactured in Britain, but it will also guide them on quality and standards within each sector. Without this symbol a product can claim to be UK made but this doesn’t necessarily mean the entirety of the product is made in the UK.

STATING THE FACTS

‘Made in Britain’ – it’s a great statement of quality and standard, however, many manufacturers can use this as a ver y loose term.

Customers must at first not take this at face value. A product may be marked as made in this countr y but that could actually translate as assembled here at the final stage of manufacturing. Many companies manufacture abroad to produce products on mass and, in some cases, use cheaper materials and methods that may not live up to the standards of the BSI.

As discussed the label of ‘Made in Britain’ reflects trust in the quality of British manufacturing and falsely labelled products may lead to customers being let down by poor product

reliability, problems with materials and issues with installations. Impor ted products also make it more difficult for the manufacturer to be accountable for any faults.

At John Guest we have to maintain standards to retain and use the Kitemark on our products. This means inspections on site twice a year, taking a total of six days. They assess the manufacturing process, materials and assembly, test our products to tough standards and as a result award the mark if criteria has been met. Abroad there is a variety of standards, but quality control differs. Cheaper

products will often not be thoroughly assessed and manufacturers can become less traceable for suppliers and customers, making a solution or response harder to come by. The repercussions can be felt r ight across the supply chain, with suppliers left out of pocket for faulty goods and business lost, while users can be left with no resolution or suppor t if a product doesn’t live up to its promise of quality.

It is also wor th remembering that there are also many copycat products on the market, meaning that when customers are presented

Page 10: PUSH-FIT PEOPLE...WELCOME TO THE MARCH EDITION OF ‘THE PUSH-FIT PEOPLE’. The year is very much in full swing and once again we fi nd ourselves incredibly busy across all areas

with what may look like a push-fit product, for example, material and manufacturing methods may actually differ. Behind such a product will also be a number of different manufacturers in the stages of production, again making it harder for customers to repor t a problem or even take matter to a legal level in foreign cour ts.

WHY BUY BRITISH?

Impor ted products are by no means all bad and there are plenty of manufacturers out there that produce quality products that incorporate innovation and reliability. Yet, how do products claiming to be ‘Made in Britain’ actually compare with those that are genuinely made in factories right here?

At John Guest we have a thorough manufacturing process that boasts quality control checks at each stage of production from moulding at our West Drayton facility through to storage and distribution at our Bracknell site. Every aspect is managed in-house by fully-trained and cer tified employees and standards that meet the Kitemark are implemented on a daily basis. The product that ends up at the supplier and in the hands of the user is the product that has been made on site at our UK factory.

BUT WHY DOES IT MATTER IF PRODUCTS ARE MADE IN PART OR ENTIRELY IN THE UK?

A British manufacturer has to ensure BSI standards are maintained, met and exceeded and, as mentioned, inspections take place twice a year. This means that assurance of a product doesn’t just come from the manufacturer, but it also comes from an external outside source that is recognised across the wor ld, with many

of the BSI standards mimicked and adapted by other countr ies.

With the weight of British quality and testing behind a product a customer can also be assured that there is usually a point of contact for suppor t. With a British manufacturer comes a British head office, security of supply, traceable products and transparency. British manufacturers are also accountable for any problems a product may have and any product marked by the BSI can then be taken through clear channels if a supplier or customer needs to escalate or highlight an issue.

Increasing demands of new technologies and faster and easier installation of more reliable components has undoubtedly influenced the way many specify and buy products. Within the majority of sectors, needs and requirements are forever evolving and engineering excellence behind a product can often be the greatest consideration ahead of cost.

An example of British engineering can be taken direct from our company, where more than 40 years ago a sophisticated piece of technology was developed by John Guest – the invention of the plastic push-fi t concept. In 2015, this connecting solution has penetrated a wide variety of sectors and is sold across the globe as a trusted, quality product. Yet, like its origins, the production of such a product remains in Britain continuously going through

rigorous checks internally and inspected annually by other independent bodies. Buying British therefore isn’t just about being patriotic or supporting the country’s economy, it’s also about ensuring people buy the best quality, understand the process behind a product and make judgement on a product based on standards rather than simply on cost.

PUSH-FIT DIARY

John and Fiona Devine from Windsor set up Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service in memory of their extraordinary little boy who sadly passed away in early 2006 from a rare brain tumour, aged only 8 years old. Their personal experience, and subsequent extensive research, led them to realise that there was a vital need for a Berkshire children’s hospice. The charity now funds Alexander’s Nurses who support children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions in their own homes right across Berkshire and the bordering areas of surrounding counties.

Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service now has the land it urgently needs to build Berkshire’s vitally needed children’s hospice. The donated 6-acre site is in Woodlands Park, Maidenhead, and is in an ideal location for families providing easy access from both east and west Berkshire, but there will be no boundaries for where a child lives to qualify for their support. The charity has raised £3.5 million, but needs to raise a total of £5m to

build its children’s hospice to provide respite, support, and emergency care and bereavement services in a home from home environment for children aged up to 19. The service will also encompass a palliative care outreach team, which will provide a ‘hospice at home’

service and already funds three palliative care nurses who work out in the community.

We are happy to be able to contribute by donating £20,000 last year and pledging a further £20,000 in 2015 towards this worthwhile charity, along with the offer of JG Speedfi t products to assist with their new build. Fiona Devine said, “A huge thank you for your donation, this is truly wonderful news and we are absolutely delighted, thank you so much. A sincere and heartfelt thank you once again for the fantastic support from your company, it will make such a difference to our charity and another signifi cant step towards our build.”

PUSH-FIT SPOTLIGHT

JG Layfl at® pipe, the innovative plastic pipework for plumbing and heating projects, truly represents our objective to provide cutting-edge plumbing and heating solutions that are both easy to install and energy effi cient.

The JG Layfl at® pipe simply lays fl at, stays fl at and is ultra fl exible, allowing greater control and ease of movement making it possible for a single person to meander and route the pipe as they wish, ensuring a swift and smooth installation.

Transporting the JG Layfl at® pipe is hassle-free in comparison to other copper equivalents, it is very light to carry and compact enough to be loaded into a small space whilst moving from the shop to the construction site. Regardless of whether you are using a 25m or a 150m JG Layfl at® coil, the pipe is consistently easy to remove from the packaging.

The product proves to be environmentally friendly not just during the process of manufacture, but also throughout the length of its life cycle. Once installed, the JG Layfl at® pipe continues to save energy due to the low thermal conductivity of plastic, allowing minimal heat loss, which makes it very suitable for underfl oor heating installations.

Thanks to the inbuilt barrier layer, which prevents the ingress of air, as well as the smooth inner surface of the JG Layfl at® pipe, a permanent unrestricted fl ow through the system can be assured as no limescale or corrosion would occur within the lifetime of the product. That on its own offers a signifi cant energy saving as the power needed to pump fl uids throughout the circuit would not be expected to increase over time due to corrosion clogs.

The overall sustainability and energy effi ciency of the new JG Layfl at® polybutylene pipe make it the number one choice for the energy cautious, while the ease of use, speed of installation and lifelong reliability of the product make it ideal for any plumbing and UFH

project where precision and impeccable quality are paramount.

For more information on JG Layfl at®, visit speedfi t.co.uk where video installation guides are also available.
