DESCRIPTION

In this session, the graduate school application process and tips on how to complete a successful application will be discussed. Topics to be covered include: why pursue graduate degrees, writing a personal statement, asking for letters of recommendation, and traversing the application process. Additionally, attendees will learn about tips for selecting recommendation writers, searching for the right graduate program and advisors, possible sources of funding, keeping organized and meeting application deadlines. At the end of this seminar, you will be able to: a. Have a better understanding of the graduate school application process b. Be able to write a better personal statement c. Be able to select recommendation writers that will provide excellent letters d. Have concrete tools to aid them in the graduate school application process e. Be aware of resources available for further assistance

– Funded by the National Science Foundation– Supports minority students majoring in Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines– Main goals include research experiences and graduate school

preparation– Currently, 50-60 scholars at OSU; ~200 scholars state-wide– Since 2009, ~52% of graduates have attended graduate school

• Grammar• Tell your story…..• Have multiple people read statements• Writing process - grammar• Reuse but also tailor • Always proofread once more before submitting

Letters of Recommendation – How to Ask

• Ask, but find someone else if:– They are busy or don’t have time– Don’t feel comfortable– They are hesitant for any reason

• Provide a copy of recommender format/topics• Provide a copy of your resume• Provide a deadline– Give yourself a time buffer
