Children’s choir was always something I was involved in growing up. (My mom was the children’s choir director, so I guess I didn’t have a choice!) If the choir wasn’t singing, it was something like a “Happy Birthday Jesus” solo at the Christmas Eve service. When I started as a full-time staff member at FBCTC in January, starting some type of children’s choir was high on my radar! When Meschel reworked the kids’ Wednesday night programming to Kid Jam, which included music, I was very excited! I immediately called my mom and said, “You have to do this with me!!” She was over-the- moon excited as well. So, for the past four weeks, my mom and I have been leading preK-6th graders in a music time every Wednesday evening. We have been preparing them to lead the first song in our worship service for Family Sunday, which is THIS SUNDAY! The plan is to continue this for every Family Sunday! I think my favorite part of this process has been seeing them immediately connect to the music when we start singing. They come in rowdy as can be; but as soon as we start that music, they are focused and ready to worship! It has been a blessing to be able to teach them the purpose behind music in worship, how special it is to get to lead worship with all generations, and the purpose behind WHY we worship! “Big church” can be very overwhelming and hard to understand at their age; but if we continue to teach them the purpose behind worship, sit attentively with them, and even give them a leadership role during the service, they will carry that with them for the rest of their lives. Those experiences definitely made me who I am today. We are all excited to have the kids lead us in worship this Sunday!
