And he can bring her back--if Cassiewill agree to be his bride. That is the

    Ice

(Not that thats anythingnew!) Claires favorite thingabout riding in the horseshow was getting to ride her

all-time favorite pony Velvet. They both did a wonderfuljob together and won a well-deserved yellow ribbon, which I thought was greatconsidering ho long wevebeen riding!! (Yellow ribbon

    is third place.)

    Rachels Class:

    Unfortunately, my

class was not asfortunate asClaires. Right be-fore my class be-gan, it startedpouring down rain!So Mrs. Brownsaid wed have to

Finish the rest of the showanother day. But then itstopped raining, and we wentto mount up again, which is

when it started raining...again!So we went to take thehorses down to the barnwhen...it stopped raining! Wedid the class very quicklyand.I got third place. It was

    a great first horseshow!!!

    Claires Class:

Claire was in a walk/trot be-ginner class with seven other

riders. The rain was holdingoff and Claire was really ex-cited and ready to ride!Claire did very well with allthe commands, although shedid hove to exert a lot offorce to get Velvet to trot.

    in the cold, Arctic

waters. The polarbear can swim at thespeed of 6 miles perhour using its pawsin a dog-paddle tech-nique. Unlike otherbears, the polar beardoes not hibernate,

but stays active all yearround. They are also not ter-ritorial. Although they can besomewhat aggressive, theywould rather flee then fight.

In general, adult polar bearslead solitary lives. However, young males have often beenseen playing together harm-lessly, perhaps preparing forthe mating season when theywill fight over the females.

hunts for food is by waiting

near a hole in the ice for aseal to surface for a breath ofair. When it does, the polarbear snatches it up-he can

not afford to miss seeing as it

Carissa and her mother and fathersat down with the board of directors fromthe stables later that week. As Carissa ex-plained what had transpired at the stablesthe day Sir Lancelot appeared at the stables, the faces of the board grew grim. Weregoing to have to look into this, said one of

    the board.

A few weeks later as Carissa wasstarting her riding lesson, the director of the

board, Mr. Harrison, called her into the of-fice. We have been investigating the mys-terious behavior of this horse Lancelot forthe past weeks and found out the reasonsfor his behavior. He went on. Apparently,

Lancelots owner, Mr. Carder, was involvedin trafficking drug throughout the state. Heused Lancelot sometimes as a diversion andsometimes as compliance. Obviously, Lance-lot had no decision in these matters seeingas he is a horse. Mr. Harrison paused for a

breath then continued. Lancelot apparentlyrefused to do what Carder asked him to doon more then one occasion and for that,

    Carder kicked and abused him.

    Carissa shuddered.

Carder will obviously go to jail,

Mr. Harrison said. Its just a matter of

    time.

What will happen to all of his

horses? Carissa asked anxiously turningover images of Sir Lancelot in her head.

They will either be confiscated or

sold. Mr. Harrison looked at Carissa.

Why do you ask? he said.

Oh, nothing. Just a thought. She

said. Carissa sat there for a moment thenjumped up. Can I use your phone? she

    said.

    A Prince or a KnightPage 9

    Sir Lancelot stopped momentarily to

look at her and then resumed his snorting andbucking.

Carissa searched the field franticly forher teacher who wasnt anywhere to be seen.

    Carissa raced up to Lancelot.

Lancelot! she cried Its Carissa! Come

    on boy!

Lancelot stopped bucking and looked ather with frightened eyes. Carissa slowly madeher way up to him. Lancelot, she cooed,

whats wrong, sweetie? She touched the snip atthe end of his nose and listened to his laboredbreathing. He looked her in the eyes and laid hishead on her shoulder. Carissa silently took thebridle from one of the stable hands. She slippedthe halter over Sir Lancelots head and led himover to the barn where she checked him forcuts and scrapes. Carissa didnt think he washurt although his front left leg looked a littleswollen. She rifled through the medical kit for abandage. She found a turquoise blue one and be-

gan to wrap up Sir Lancelots leg.

What made you so frightened, huh?

she asked Lancelot. Something must have reallyscared you to make you act like that. She fin-

ished wrapping the bandage. Carissa stood upand looked around for an adult. Since no oneseemed to be in the area, Carissa led Sir Lance-lot over to the office where she knew someonewould be. Mrs. Stem, the office secretary, ran

    out of the office.

What happened, Carissa? she asked. She peered at Carissa from behind her thick,

    rounded, glasses.

Can you call my mom? asked Carissa.

Im going to take Sir Lancelot home with me.
