Additional Adoption Requirements to make your new pet at home. Please read through the following adoption requirements and make sure you understand them, please feel free to ask if anything is unclear. We want our furkids to have the best home when they are adopted.

1. Any dog or cat adopted from us must be surrendered back to us if you don’t want them anymore. If you do have a family wanting the dog we will arrange a home check and they will need to sign the adoption contract.

2. You will not euthanize the animal without talking to us.3. When adopting a big breed and the dog will be an outside dog you agree to give the

dog proper shelter from cold/heat and rain.4. When adopting a large breed dog you agree to not use the dog as a security dog and

that the dog will live at your home address, as stated in your adoption contract.5. You hereby agree to Purrpawsforlife conducting post adoption checks to see how the

dog is settling in at 4 weeks, 12 weeks and 6 months. 6. Your premises must be safe for them to live, make sure there are no objects that they

can get hurt when running and playing.7. Make sure your yard is safe and secure that the dog cannot get out, some dogs are

nervous when left alone for the first time and will try to get out and go after you. 8. When adopting a puppy that is too young for sterilization you agree to contact us when

they are 6 months old to sterilize the dog. You hereby undertake to return them to Purrpaws for sterilization at 6 months of age. Should you choose to have them sterilised through your own vet you need to send us proof that the dog was sterilized. Sterilization of this animal is non-negotiable.

9. Ensure your new cat or kitten has a cosy bed, cat litter box, blanket and toys to feel at home in his/her furrever home.

10. Please clean their litter boxes on a daily basis. Make sure the box is always in the same place as they learn where it is and will keep going back to the same spot.

11. When getting a Grown Cat, please read the attached document to ensure their safety.12. Tick and flea treatments need to be done every 8 to 12 weeks and deworming every

six months.13. Fresh food and water need to be provided on a daily basis.14. Summer times please ensure your new pet’s access to more water than in the winter

months.15. When adopting a kitten or puppy please make sure that they get kitten/puppy food “wet

and dry” as a cat/dog is a kitten/puppy until the age of 1year.16. Please ensure that you get more info on the specific breed you want to adopt.17. Hygiene is very important so ensure that their bowls are kept clean and washed daily.18. Dogs need to be kept busy and entertained and it is this actual fact why we dogs need

toys. It replaces the activities that they would have experienced as wild animals or hard-working dogs. The toys that you get meet these needs and help them to remain fit, healthy and well-adjusted dogs. Also it is a wonderful way to interact with you. It really pleases them when they can interact with you, a toy and play.

19. Along with satisfying your cat’s natural instincts, play is important to helping keep your pet healthy and happy. Play provides important exercise for cats, especially those that live exclusively indoors. When it comes to cats, however, play isn’t just about fun and games. For cats in the wild, the act of play is actually a serious business that helps kittens learn important survival skills like stalking, chasing and trapping prey. Even if your cat never ventures outside your home, this basic instinct to hunt can remain strong, which is why it is important to give our feline family members the opportunity to express this natural behavior through play.

20. Please don’t give bones to your dogs, 10 reasons attached.21. Do Not Give COW’S MILK to cats or kittens, as they cannot digest it. It causes

diarrhea or constipation. Fresh water is the best. 22. Some dogs have no problems digesting milk and dairy products. Yet others

experience acute intestinal distress — like gas, diarrhea or vomiting — whenever they consume these kinds of foods.

23. In order for a dog to digest milk, the lactose must first be broken apart into its two basic, easy-to-absorb sugars. And in order to do that, a dog’s body must be able to produce a special lactose-splitting enzyme known as lactase. And that’s one thing most dogs can’t reliably do.

24. Oily and fatty foods, which are often found on our tables, can lead to severe dog health problems such as diarrhea, vomiting, and pancreatitis. Even worse, there are several people foods that are highly toxic to animals. Toxic food and plant list attached

25. Some foods which are edible for humans, and even dogs, can pose hazards for cats because of their different metabolism. Some may cause only mild digestive upsets, whereas, others can cause severe illness, and even death.

26. Lists of toxic foods to cats and dogs attached.27. If you adopted a dog or cat that are not old enough to be sterilised, it is your

responsibility to contact Purrpaws for life to make a booking for the sterilisation when they are 6months old.

Cat sterilisations can be booked with Chanel 083 228 8011Dog Sterilisations can be booked with Lindie 083 650 9558, Chanel 083 228 8011

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PET.The decision to adopt a pet is a big one as you are adopting a new family member! Your dog will love and protect you with their life and so you should love and protect them too. Animals are feeling, thinking beings, just like us - they deserve to be treated as a member of the family - with a warm, soft bed at night in a sheltered place, regular meals twice a day with abundant fresh water daily and clean bowls (we like eating from clean plates and so do they). Just like humans, dogs need exercise and play.  They are not to be chained or tethered and need space to run about and just be dogs! When they're not feeling well, they will let you know by their behaviour - they may become quiet or lethargic - and just like you would take yourself or a family member to the doctor, your pet may need to see the vet. Being a pet parent or sibling is a rewarding experience and a long term commitment. They're excited to learn new things and have new experiences like going for walks and meeting other people and dogs...they also love to impress you so teach them new tricks and good behaviour and reward them with yummy treats when they do well! Developing a bond with your pet is a precious experience and one that you and your pet will treasure for a lifetime. Thank you for adopting this special animal. We know they will bring many years of happiness to your life!

10 Reasons Why Bones Are Bad For Dogs:1. Broken teeth or torn gums. While certainly not life threatening, a broken tooth or injured gum can cause a lot of pain for your dog, and may also require pricey dental work.

2. Bone may get stuck in or around your dog’s lower jaw. Because of the way your dog’s mouth is shaped, bones can become easily lodged both within and around the lower jaw. Depending on the way the bone is jammed, this may require a veterinary visit for removal and/or treatment of the injured tissue.

3. Mouth and tongue may get cut or injured. Again, not necessarily deadly, but can prove to be a very painful experience for your pet and a costly one for you if the injured area becomes infected.

4. Bone may become lodged in your dog’s esophagus. You’ll know immediately if this happens because your pet will gag in an effort to bring the bone back up. If after a number of attempts your dog is unable to evacuate the bone from the esophagus a trip to the veterinarian will be in order.

5. Bone may become lodged in your dog’s windpipe. This can happen if your dog inhales a piece of bone, either while eating and breaking apart the bone, or trying to regurgitate a lodged bone. This is a medical emergency and your dog will need immediate medical attention before breathing is compromised.

6. Bones may get stuck in your dog’s stomach. You may think that if it gets past their mouth they are in the clear, but unfortunately this is not the case. Dogs have the capacity to swallow items much larger than they are able to digest, and when they do this the bone may be too large to pass from the stomach into the intestines. If a bone becomes lodged in your dog’s stomach they will need veterinary care, and possibly surgery or endoscopy, to remove the bone.

7. A bone can get stuck in the intestines and cause a blockage. If a bone is small enough to pass through the stomach, it may still be too large for the intestines. If a bone becomes trapped in the intestines it will cause a blockage, and may need to be surgically removed. The first symptom of this is constipation and inability to pass stool.

8. Inability to fully pass bone fragments, causing constipation. If the bone has passed all the way through the stomach into the intestines, it may still have trouble passing all the way through the intestines because of pain. Sharp bone fragments can cut the inner lining of the intestines, causing severe pain and an inability for your pet to pass stool.

9. Rectal bleeding can occur as bone fragments pass through the intestines and rectum. This condition can be very painful for your pet, and can be dangerous depending on where the injury is occurring in the intestines. You should seek veterinary attention in the case of any rectal bleeding.

10. Perforation of the stomach or intestines. If the abdominal or intestinal walls are injured there is a chance for infection. A serious bacterial infection occuring in the abdominal area is peritonitis, and it is very difficult to treat. This infection, if not properly treated promptly can cause death. If your dog is exhibiting any of the symptoms of peritonitis in dogs such as dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, weakness, swollen abdominal area, depression or shock you need to visit the veterinarian immediately.

THANK YOU FOR CARING ABOUT YOUR ADOPTED PET

Helping Your Cat Adjust to a New HomeAdjusting to a new home can be a tense and frightening experience for a cat. Your patience and understanding during his/her initial adjustment period can do a lot to help your new cat feel at home.

The ride home

Riding in a car can be traumatic for cats. Your cat or kitten should be confined to a carrier during the ride home as well as during subsequent trips to the veterinarian. Do not let your new cat loose in a moving car or allow children to excite him/her. Do not leave the cat unattended in the car or stop to visit friends, shop, etc. Keep your cat in his/her carrier until you are safely inside your home.

The new home

Consider your companion's past experiences. Your kitten may have been recently separated from his/her mother and litter mates. The kitten or cat has had to cope with the transition of a shelter and the stress of surgery. The adult cat may have been separated from a familiar home and forced to break a bond with human companions or other animals. Now he/she must adjust again to totally new surroundings.

Allow your cat several weeks to adapt. During this period, the cat or kitten should be carefully confined indoors. He/She needs to get used to you as the provider of love, shelter and food. Be sure that all windows and doors are kept closed and that all screens are secure. A scared cat can easily get out of a high open window. Purrpaws for life strongly advocates keeping cats indoors for their entire lives, but if you choose to eventually let your new cat outside, it is imperative that he/she stay totally indoors for at least one month, and the new kitten until he/she is grown.

It's not uncommon for cats to display behavior problems during the first days in a new home, but these usually disappear over time. New cats and kittens often bolt under furniture. Some may spend hours or even days hiding. Sit and talk quietly to the cat. If you must take the cat out of his hiding place, carry him/her gently to a quiet protected area where he/she will feel secure. Be sure food, water and litter box are nearby.

SOME FACT TO TAKE IN CONSIDERATION WHEN BRINGING A NEW DOG INTO YOUR HOME

Bringing a new dog into a home is always an exciting time. It's like adding a new family member or guest to the

household.

Pet owners often underestimate the kinds of problems that can occur if mistakes are made.

This can be a difficult if not dangerous situation if it's not handled correctly.

Many people think they can just bring a new dog home and let the dogs work things out themselves. For the lucky ones this works out OK, but more often than not people find themselves in the middle of a dog fight and wonder what went wrong.

Dogs are pack animals and humans are primates. These two groups interact differently.

Three Dogs Are a Pack

Here are some of the issues that develop when people create dog packs:

1. Dogs become much more territorial (just like wolf packs).

2. Three dogs will develop a RANKING ORDER which includes a pack leader. Every dog in a pack knows

exactly what its rank is within their dog pack. When dogs don’t have a strong human pack leader, one of

the three dogs will ALWAYS step to the line and become the leader.

3. When a new dog is added to a home every dog in that house has to re-establish its personal rank within

the new family pack. Re-establishing rank is where dog fights come from.

4. By the way the worst dog fights are inter-female dog fights (females are fierce).

5. When fights begin in a larger pack (3 or more dogs), most of the time all the dogs will gang up on the

weakest dog.

6. Once a dog has been attacked it is often traumatized for life. These dogs will always be weary of meeting

new dogs. In fact, once a dog has been attacked it will often become dog aggressive and automatically

want to fight any new dogs that it sees.

7. A dog can love you and not respect you. Love and respect are two totally different things.

8. Most dogs don’t want to be the pack leaders. When it’s forced on them they get stressed and nervous.

When dogs have strong human pack leaders this does not happen. The human pack leader makes it crystal clear

that this aggressive behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Human pack leader shows his dog or dogs that he/she will protect them FROM OTHER DOGS. This is a very

important issue that the average dog owner doesn’t realize, but I guarantee you your dog does.

Our goal in introducing a new dog into a family which already has other dogs comes down to "bringing another

member into the family pack in a manner that is seamless and nonviolent."

Page 9: Purrpaws for Lifepurrpawsforlife.co.za/p/wp-content/uploads/2018/...1a-wo…  · Web viewHygiene is very important so ensure that their bowls are kept clean and washed daily. Dogs

When it's done correctly the first few weeks of your relationship with the new dog set the stage for the rest of your

dogs life. The minute a dog meets you he/she starts to evaluate you as a leader. If you know this it's easy to set

yourself up as a pack leader.
