High School Summer School Programs Information

Traditional High School Summer School The district will offer traditional classes for 6 weeks, June 19-July 28, 2017 (no school on July 4). Programs hours are 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Traditional classes will be taught in a classroom setting. Classes for the High School Summer School include Anatomy/Physiology, Advanced Quantitative Reasoning, Exploration Literature and Composition 9,10,11, and 12, Integrated Math 1, 2 and 3, Physical Science, Spanish 1 and Physical Education. Not all courses will be offered at all sites. Check the schedule on the following pages.

Virtual Credit Advancement Program (VCAP) VCAP classes are self-paced and will combine technology with individualized teacher instruction. Enhanced summer offerings through the Credit Flex process will allow students to create individual learning plans. Regular goal setting conferences with an instructor will support VCAP and Credit Flex students. Upon successful completion high school credits are awarded. VCAP classes will be held with three different sessions: 8:30 am – 10:30 am, 10:30 am-12:30 pm, and 12:30 pm -2:30 pm.

Ohio Graduation Test Preparation ProgramAt one site, an OGT preparation program will be offered for students who need to pass one or more parts of the graduation test. OGT class times are 8:00 – 10:00 and 10:00 – 12:00. Students must attend a minimum of 10 hours to test; the OGT will be given the week of June 15-19, 2017. Please see high school counselor for an application.

AttendanceDaily attendance is required in order for your child to benefit from the summer school programs. Every effort should be made to get your child to school on time and ready for instruction. Please call the summer school site before 8:00 a.m. if your child is going to be absent. Students can have no more than 1 absence in Physical Education and no more than 2 absences in all other traditional classes. Credit will not be granted after two absences in physical education and three absences in all other traditional classes.

Vacations/CampsStudents with vacation or camp plans conflicting with the summer program dates are advised not to enroll in the High School Summer programs. Vacations and camp are not excused absences.

DisciplineStudents are expected to follow all rules and regulations of Columbus City Schools. Discipline issues will be handled as specified in the Columbus City Schools’ Guide to Positive Student Behavior.

MaterialsAll books and materials loaned to students must be returned in satisfactory condition by the last day of class.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

REGISTRATION LOCATIONAll registration for currently enrolled Columbus City Schools’ students will take place online at the district website www.ccsoh.us beginning June 5. Note: Seniors planning to graduate in August will be registered by their school counselor or the summer school office.

NON-CCS STUDENTSStudents not currently enrolled in Columbus City Schools (i.e. out of district, parochial and charter) must complete a paper application. Registration for non-CCS students will be held June 10, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Columbus City Schools Central Enrollment Office (430 CLEVELAND AVE. COLUMBUS, 43215).

To register students must present: parent photo identification, verification of student identification, proof of custody/guardianship, and address verification. See details below.

Necessary Documents•  Parent Photo Identification:It’s important that we can verify the identification of those requesting to enroll their child in Columbus City Schools. Please be prepared to show photo identification at registration

• Verification of Student Identification (must present any one of the following items)

Student Birth Certificate Passport or attested transcript of a passport filed with the registrar of passports showing the date and place of

birth of the child Attested/certified transcript of the certificate of birth; attested/certified transcript of the certificate of baptism

or other religious record showing the date and place of birth of the child An attested/certified transcript of a hospital record showing the date and place of birth of the child; or a birth

affidavit.

• Proof of Custody/Guardianship (if other than biological/residential parent)Custody Document - Certified copy of a judge’s order or decree or modification of such order allocating parental rights and responsibilities and designating a residential parent and legal custodian of the child (if applicable).

• Address Verification (must present any one of the following items):

A recent utility bill (gas, electric or water) in the parent/guardian's name. (Phone or cable bills are not acceptable).

A current lease agreement with parent/guardian's name. Name and phone number of the landlord must be provided in order to verify the lease.

Two most-recent employment checks with the parent/guardian's name and address. Most recent check stub, received from the Department of Human Services or Social Security, addressed to the

parent. Statement from the Department of Human Services or Social Security, on letterhead, indicating the address

used by the parent for receipt of checks. Statement from the Personnel Office of parent's employer, on letterhead, indicating the address used by

parent for employment purposes and for submission of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) W-2 forms.

Change of custody forms on Franklin County Children Services (FCCS) letterhead or court documents indicating a change of custodial parent (and address).

TUITION INFORMATION

Columbus City Schools’ students pay $50 for Physical Education and $100 for Traditional and VCAP courses. Fees apply to all students legally residing within the Columbus City Schools’ attendance area.

Non-Columbus City Schools’ residents pay an out-of district fee of $150 for Physical Education and $300 for Traditional and VCAP courses. Fees apply to all students living outside the Columbus City School attendance area.

Tuition must be paid at the time of registration. Credit or debit cards are accepted through the online system.Cash or money order will be accepted at registration for non-CCS students.Refunds will not be issued once classes begin.

Exploration Literature and Composition 9 (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00-12:30 Location: CentennialStudents will learn and hone techniques for close reading, writing, textual citation, formal and informal speaking, and analysis of text using a variety of selections, both literary and informational, classic and contemporary, representing diverse cultures and viewpoints.

Introduction World Literature and Composition 10 (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00-12:30 Location: Independence Prerequisite: Exploration Literature and Composition 9: Students will engage in close reading, writing, textual citation, formal and informal speaking, and analysis of literary and informational texts from various world cultures, including that of the Americas.

American Literature and Composition 11 (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00-12:30 Location: Northland Prerequisite: Exploration Literature and Composition 9 and 10: Students will analyze a broad range of literary and informational texts that encompass the historical and cultural development of American literature from Native American and Colonial times to the Contemporary period.

World Literature and Composition 12 (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00-12:30 Location: SouthPrerequisite: Exploration Literature and Composition 9, 10, and 11: This course provides students a chance to experience literary and informational selections from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, while highlighting British authors and poets, in their historical, social, philosophical, biographical, and canonical contexts.

Integrated Math 1 (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00 – 12:30 Location: All sites except West High SchoolStudents will be introduced to Common Core mathematical processes and develop prerequisite skills for all future math courses

Integrated Math 2 (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00 – 12:30 Location: Centennial, Downtown, IndependencePrerequisite: Integrated Math 1: Students will focus on computational based skills with emphasis on problem solving.

Integrated Math 3 (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00 – 12:30 Location: Downtown High School Prerequisite: Integrated Math 1 and 2: Students will incorporate functions and graphs to describe, model and solve problems.

Advanced Quantitative Reasoning (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00 – 12:30 Location: Downtown High School Prerequisite: Integrated Math 1, 2 and 3: Students will focus on the reinforcement of computational methods and be introduced to statistics.

Physical Science (1.0 CR) (6 weeks) 8:00 – 12:30 Location: Downtown High School Students will be introduced to physics, chemistry, astronomy and earth science. Students will have hands-on activities through experiments, application problem solving and discussions about the physical world.

Spanish I (1.0 CR) 6 weeks) 8:00 – 12:30 Location: Downtown High School Students will learn Spanish as a tool for speaking, listening and reading as well as gaining cultural insights.

Physical Education (.25 CR) 3 weeks) 8:00 – 12:30 Location: Centennial and SouthSession I: June 19-July 7 Session II: July 10 – July 28. Students will participate in activities that develop physical fitness, a positive self-image, cooperative skills and promote life-long sports and activities.

VIRTUAL CREDIT ADVANCEMENT PROGRAM(VCAP)

The Columbus city Schools Virtual Credit Advancement Program offers students an individualized, blended approach to earning course credit through online instructional delivery utilizing Plato Learning Environment software. The Columbus city Schools Virtual Credit Advancement Program provides students with an alternative method for earning high school credits toward graduation. A certificated teacher will be in each classroom to assist students with the online instruction. VCAP courses will be offered at all of our summer school sites.

DATES: JUNE 19-JULY 28, 2017 (no school on July 4)

TIMES: VCAP classes will be offered in two hour blocks: 8:30 – 10:30, 10:30 – 12:30 and 12:30 -2:30. Students may register for one or two 2-hour blocks that meet daily (Monday – Friday) until coursework is completed.

To receive credit for courses in VCAP, students must demonstrate mastery of the subject matter. This means students must pass the total assigned activities with an overall average of 60% or higher. To obtain the overall average students must complete all Post Test and earn an “average” of 60% or higher. In addition an individual score of 60% or higher must be earned on the End of course exam.Some courses also have mandatory written assignments. Students can earn the following grades by mastering their courses with completion of:

1. Can anyone attend the high school summer learning program?Priority is given to currently enrolled Columbus City Schools' students. Students who live outside of the district may enroll if space is available beginning June 9.
