WelcomeThe Mississippi Health Care Association invites you to the 2015 Annual Convention & Trade Show.

he Mississippi Health Care Association is “all new” this

year with new venue, new types of educational offerings

and new activities. First, MHCA makes a change in venue

for its Annual Convention & Trade Show in 2015. The

event will be centrally located in the state at the Hilton

Jackson on County Line Road making the convention equally

accessible for its members in the north and south.

The focus for this year’s Convention & Trade Show is on US:

who we are – our PEOPLE; what we do – our PURPOSE; and

why we do it – our PASSION. To recognize and celebrate our

theme, MHCA sponsored a Photo Contest requesting facilities

submit photos representing each segment of our theme: People

– Purpose – Passion. The winners in each category along with

honorable mention photos will be prominently displayed

throughout the convention.

MHCA also shakes up the educational offerings with

pre-conference breakout sessions and a peer panel breakout session.

The first day of the convention starts with the pre-conference

breakout sessions which consist of two presenters. One of these

will be Peggy Connorton, Director of Quality and LTC Trend

Tracker for the American Health Care Association. Peggy will bring

her vast knowledge of LTC Trend Tracker to us along with an

explanation of the changes made to the system in late 2014.

Quinton Dickerson, co-owner of Frontier Strategies, a public

relations and advertising firm, will be the other presenter. Frontier

Strategies represents MHCA so they are very familiar with the

long term care community. Quinton will share his public relations

knowledge with us and provide tips and ideas on how to handle

difficult public relation issues. The Convention will then kick off

with our first of two Trade Shows.

We will start the next day with our second Trade Show and then

continue in the afternoon with the well-liked breakout sessions.

There will be three sessions of “Hot Topics” in long term care.

These will consist of the Mississippi Division of Medicaid Long

Term Care Division’s Case Mix nurses discussing “Trends in RUG

Reclassification”. The second hot topic will be “Abuse and Neglect”

and will be presented by Treasure Tyson, Special Assistant

Attorney General in the Medicaid Fraud Unit of the Mississippi

Attorney General’s Office. The final hot topic will be “Antipsychotic

Drug Usage Reduction and Dementia Care.” This all new type of

session will consist of a panel of our peers who have made

significant strides in reducing antipsychotic use through processes

that have improved dementia care in their facilities. This session

will be moderated by Lindsey Lewis, Ph.D., the Training and

Development Coordinator for HMP Management Corp.

The final day is one you will not want to miss. David Hayes

will present a three hour session on “Birds of a Feather.” This

session will teach you to understand how to effectively commu-

nicate and manage based on your personality type and that of

others. This will be a fun, eye opening and informative session.

The fun and fellowship for this year’s Convention is also

different and unique. While we once again host the President’s

Reception, we will be including political candidates seeking

election for some of Mississippi’s highest offices into our activities.

The finale will be a unique culinary event that no one will want

to miss. The American Chef, Walter Scheib, will prepare and serve

a “White House State Dinner” for those in attendance. Chef Scheib

served as executive chef for eleven years for two presidential

families, the Clintons and the Bushes. Chef Scheib, in addition to

preparing a delectable meal, will give us an intimate, human view

of two First Families, the corridors of political power, international

personalities and the most famous building in the United States

from a unique vantage point: the kitchen. Attendees will receive

a commemorative gift and a complimentary copy of Chef

Scheib’s book, White House Chef – Eleven Years, Two Presidents,

One Kitchen.

Long Term Care Trend TrackerPresented by Peggy Connorton Director of Quality and LTC Trend Tracker - American Health Care Association

Peggy Connorton has served as Director of Quality and LTC Trend Tracker for the American Health Care Association since 2010. In this position, she has led the development, education and marketing of LTC Trend Tracker for AHCA. She also serves in a leadership position for AHCA’s Disaster Planning and Customer Experience Committees and all activities associated with these entities. Prior to working for AHCA, Peggy held a variety of leadership positions in nursing facilities and long term care. Long Term Care Trend Tracker is an American Health Care Association (AHCA) member service that enables communities to compare staffing levels, resident characteristics, survey findings, revenue and cost, Medicare utilization, and quality measures with other communities locally, regionally and nationally. This benchmarking and performance tool lets users view data broadly across the spectrum or drill down by facility or ownership type or other characteristics. While this data could be collected from a variety of sources, LTC Trend Tracker collects and summarizes all of this data in one place. In this session, attendees will learn about how LTC Trend Tracker works and the new tools made available by LTC Trend Tracker during the later part of 2014.

Public RelationsPresented by: Quinton DickersonCo-Owner - Frontier Strategies

Quinton Dickerson is a Co-Owner of Frontier Strategies—a public relations, advertising, communications and interactive media company in Mississippi. The firm provides services to a wide variety of corporations, non-profits, political clients and trade associations, including MHCA. Prior to co-founding Frontier Strategies, Dickerson served as Haley Barbour’s Spokesman and Communications Director during Barbour’s successful 2003 gubernatorial campaign. Dickerson served as Spokesman and Communications Director for Congressman Chip Pickering including five years on his staff in Washington, D.C. from 1997-2001, and for Pickering’s campaigns in 1996 and 2002. Since co-founding Frontier Strategies in 2003, Dickerson has been actively involved providing communications and media consulting services for clients including Phil Bryant’s campaign for Lt. Governor and Governor, U.S. Congressman Gregg Harper’s campaigns, U.S. Senator Thad Cochran’s 2014 campaign, as well as non-profit, corporate and trade association clients, including MHCA. Dickerson will share his vast knowledge of public relations and provide insight into how facilities should handle difficult public relations issues when they arise.

Abuse and NeglectPresented by: Treasure Tyson, J.D.Special Assistant Attorney General, Medicaid Fraud Unit, Mississippi Attorney General’s Office

Long Term Care providers have specific requirements and responsibilities as it relates to the abuse and neglect of resident’s in long term care facilities. In this session, Treasure Tyson will explain the requirements of the Mississippi Vulnerable Persons Act and the responsibility of facilities in identifying and reporting abuse and neglect. She will also outline her department’s role in the investigation of alleged incidents and prosecution of those found to have committed abuse and/or neglect against a resident of a nursing facility.

Reducing Antipsychotic Drug Use & Improving Dementia CarePresented by: Moderator: Lindsey Lewis, Ph.D.Training & Development Coordinator, HMP Management Corp.

In this session, a panel of individuals from facilities who have significantly reduced their use of antipsychotic medication will discuss their processes and techniques in achieving such a reduction. With the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare announcing a new national goal of 25% reduction in off-label antipsychotic drug use by the end of 2015 and the expansion of focused dementia care surveys by the middle of 2015, this panel of peers will bring doable and real strategies to the reduction of antipsychotic use and improvement of dementia care.

On January 1, 2015, Mississippi transitioned from RUG III to RUG IV. The Mississippi Division of Medicaid’s Long Term Care Division of Case Mix will explain the differences in classification of residents as a result of the transition to RUG IV and identify trends that they are seeing during Case Mix Reviews since the transition to RUG IV. You will not want to miss the insightful knowledge that will be shared by five of the Case Mix Nurses.

David Hayes is a dynamic and seasoned seminar leader, keynote speaker and management consultant. David’s presentations are known for being entertaining, thought-provoking and motivational. His “values-based” approach to critical workplace issues such as customer service, team building, supervisory skills, diversity management and workplace violence makes his presentations unique. David has been the owner of Hayes Enterprises since 1995. In addition, he is one of the contributing authors of the book Getting Things Done: Keys to Communication, Sales and Service. He holds a degree in both Finance and Marketing from Purdue University and draws upon solid managerial experience and skills that were sharpened during a 22-year career as a manager with BellSouth Telecommunications. David’s presentation, Birds of a Feather, will be educational, entertaining and interactive as he teaches us about communication and management from a personality type perspective.

Join us for a unique culinary event as we experience a world of culinary creations prepared by Chef Walter Scheib. Chef Scheib served as White House Executive Chef through the Clinton and Bush adminis-trations. He prepared state dinners for international figures including Nelson Mandela, Tony Blair, Lady Diana Spencer and Boris Yeltsin, as well as family meals for the Bill Clinton and George Bush families.

He was hired by Hillary Clinton who was impressed with his menu preparations highlighting American cuisine. As a nod to his achievement of creating a distinctly American repertoire for the nation’s First House, upon retirement from White House Executive Chef, he formed a company called “The American Chef.”

As “The American Chef,” Chef Scheib will prepare a “state dinner” for those in attendance and then throughout the dinner, he will regale attendees with his knowledge of the development of American cuisine at the White House, as well as White House remembrances both humorous and touching.

Nursing Home AdministratorsThis educational offering has applied to the National Continuing Education Review Service (NCERS) of the National Association of Boards of Examiners of Long Term Care Administrators (NAB) for eight clock hours and eight participant hours for Nursing Home Administrators and Assisted Living Administrators.

Mississippi Nursing Home Administrators desiring continuing education credit for attendance at this year’s Educational Presentations and Trade Show can receive up to 12 continuing hours which has been approved by the Mississippi Board of Nursing Home Administrators.

Registered NursesThis convention has been awarded eight nursing hours.

The Mississippi Health Care Association is an Approved Provider of continuing nursing education by the Mississippi Nurses Foundation, Inc., an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
