My friend and I have tried for a few weeks to go out for a shop together however five kids between us a couple of jobs, dancing, swimming, karate and a couple high maintenance husbands means time is precious and not always available to us.

On a 10pm phone call to each other, the only time we have to chat these days -I tell her about a great pair of shoes I’ve seen online for her outfit which is currently shoeless, ‘hang on she tells me, let me go grab my laptop too’.

A few clicks later we are on the same pages, ‘page 6 she tells me - five shoes in’, we ooohhhhh and aaahhhhh, we shop the same sites admiring each other’s choices, even waiting for each other while the other checks out.

All the while not noticing we are in fact having our outing, only it’s virtual. Two hours later we can’t help laughing, we still managed to sneak in our shop! It wasn’t quiet the outing we had hoped for but we still managed to grab a bargain or two, have a coffee, window shop and even managed an impulse buy. It might not be conventional to some, but it’s the times and we have to roll with the virtual world we live in.

Happy Shopping!

welcome minkie mary‘Minkie Mary the Dummy Fairy’ is the perfect book for mums and dads wanting to help their little ones when it’s time for them to give their dummy away. Follow Minkie Mary on a delightful journey as she visits little boys and girls who no longer need their dummies. Find out how she magically turns a difficult time for children into one of excitement and reward!

Minkie Mary is no ordinary mouse. By day she may dance, sing and play, but at night she is a magical fairy who flies all over the world collecting dummies from children who no longer need them. She helps children (and adults) no longer rely on a dummy for comfort and security. Many children form a strong attachment to a dummy and getting them to give it up can be hard work. This book pack provides all the tools you need to support your child through this difficult time. The charming story of ‘Minkie Mary the Dummy Fairy’ will delight young children and prepare them for giving up their own dummies. In return for being big and brave, Minkie Mary leaves behind a special toy mouse to be cuddled and loved in place of their adored dummies.

weaning informationWhether you call it a dummy, pacifier or a soother, there are many parents and carers battling with their child’s desire to suck. There are numerous ways to approach weaning children of this habit and it will all depend on what you feel is the best approach for your child. ‘Minkie Mary the Dummy Fairy’ is a story about a magical fairy that emphasises to the child that they are growing up and that dummies are something they no longer need.

Some babies are soothed and comforted by sucking and like to use a dummy. They will especially want their dummy when they are tired or distressed because it can provide them feelings of relaxation and calm. For this reason it is very easy for some children to become reliant on their dummy to relieve stress and provide them with feelings of security simply through sucking their dummy. It is widely advised that to avoid problems later, it may be a good idea if parents restrict when and how often a dummy is used. The fact that you are visiting this site suggests that you are beginning to feel the time to loose the dummy is not too far away or perhaps over due.

Why it’s ok

Using a dummy is ok. Many children will do some kind of non-nutritive sucking, that is sucking dummies, thumbs, fingers, and other objects that provide no nutritional value. This behaviour is healthy, normal behaviour and offers young children a feeling of comfort, pleasure, security and relaxation during their first years of life. This habit helps children to cope with different emotions and situations. Virtually all young children place their fingers, fist, dummy, thumb, or other objects in their mouth to suck. As they grow and develop, most will naturally discontinue this habit around 2 years of age. If these behaviours have not ceased by 4 years of age it is generally recommended that they be discouraged.

Weaning worries

It is common for parents to feel a sense of dread with the thought of weaning the dummy from their child. Very often it is the parents’ fear of their child’s distress that prolongs the use of the dummy. It is important to be strong and know that any protests from your child will not last forever, you just need the strength and will power to ride out the storm.

You are intrigued by this information for a reason – giving up dummies can be difficult.

Dummies may cause problems

There are a number of potential problems that may develop as a result of prolonged use of a dummy. The first of three main areas of concern is the potential for development of disrupted sleeping patterns. This is because they come to rely on the dummy to settle to

minkie mary - minkie mary the dummy fairy $39.95

sleep and can become distressed and wake up if they lose their dummy during the night. The second major concern is that speech development may be affected due to incorrect tongue and mouth movements which can become habitual and difficult to correct. Finally, as young mouths are growing a full set of teeth, the negative effect of prolonged dummy-sucking can cause teeth position to be altered. However, this is only a concern at approximately age 5 with the emergence of adult teeth. Extensive sucking of thumbs, fingers or dummies has a tendency to put pressure against the front teeth pushing them out of alignment, causing these teeth to protrude. If you notice changes in the child’s palate (roof of their mouth) or in the way their teeth line up, you should seek advice from your paediatrician or paediatric dentist.

From the streets of Sydney as the iconic shoe buyer Lisa spends a week in Milan here is a little of her story

My shoe obsession started at a young age, I would spend hours in front of the mirror admiring my mother’s very large shoes on my own tiny feet. A last minutes decision to send me to off to Milan by my boss, is a dream come true - off to buy shoes for 7 days. I feel slightly giddy picturing myself in SJP’s shoe paradise; my theory is that no outfit is ever complete without the perfect shoe.

The plane ride over seems to go by quickly, I fall asleep to pleasant thoughts, I’m working in my dream job and about to step into the fashion capital of the world …… MILAN.

My first few hours I wonder around in amazement, history everywhere cute cafes, even cuter taxi drivers and delicious Panini. The weather is freezing but my chic beanie

and bulky coat take good care of me, even my frozen nose can’t stop me from wondering aimlessly though the streets.

The next morning I am slightly jet lagged however I still manage to hop onto the train and onto my first shoe buy in Milan, nothing could have prepared me for the millions of beautiful smelling genuine leather, nappa leather, strappy heals, boots, bags and accessories. I am so grateful for my translator because the only words I seem to be able to speak make no sense to the Italians. They politely smile waive their hands around and beg me to try on every shoe that stares at me. My days are full, and my trip successful.

In my free hours I wonder the streets with enthusiasm, and on one rare occasion I walk straight into the Milan Duomo I am instantly blown away by what stands before me - thousands of years of history, beauty at its best and architecture beyond words.

key trends for winter 2012:

An unexpected patchwork of prints and textures results in one of the season’s sweetest (and most thought-provoking)

looks: countryside chic.

I want to eat some gelati even though it’s freezing, I just feel like it’s what I need to do, I find a pretty corner café a gelato and some coffee and sit and watch the people bustle by. This is their lives, their days, normal lives bountiful and so very full of Fashion.

I spend most of the 7 days shopping for shoes and sneaking in every possible sight. I am so grateful for what I have seen and learnt in these 7 short days, fashion is a part of all our lives. Each day we choose what to wear, usually a color and style that suits our mood.

For every Cinderella out there, there is a shoe that fits

Till next time much love

I constantly strive to create a peaceful environment for the children, one filled with love and innocence, pretty sounds and blissful thoughts. I have started putting my son to be at night with meditation for boys- of course ( I have to try everything before i can recommend buying it to my customers). My son, who struggled slightly to settle into a new school and routine this year, was mesmerised by the cd. By day 2, he was repeating the wonderful affirmations and thoughts he was falling asleep too. I must admit i felt slight adulation and certain smugness that i had found this very important little key. Even more smug when my 3 year old daughter asked to fall asleep to the same cd,-for girls of course, within a few nights of playing to my son. Then my son’s new school by coincidence started a new program that adopts 10 minutes of meditation in the morning before school starts. I honestly can’t believe how well the children have taken to this. So he is falling asleep to meditation and starting his day with meditation. The outcome is just amazing. my son, came to me the other night in the middle of a noisy dinner with friends and says “mum is there somewhere I can go and meditate, it’s too noisy in here and I need to think.” Only6 years old and my precious boy is teaching me the art of balance and harmony!

Yoga for kidsBY MARSHA WENIG

When presented in a child’s language, yoga can help counter the stress experienced by young people living in a hurry-up world.

Our children live in a hurry-up world of busy parents, school pressures, incessant lessons, video games, malls, and competitive sports. We usually don’t think of these influences as stressful for our kids, but often they are. The bustling pace of our children’s lives can have a profound effect on their innate joy and usually not for the better.

I have found that yoga can help counter these pressures. When children learn techniques for self-health, relaxation, and inner fulfillment, they can navigate life’s challenges with a little more ease. Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that’s noncompetitive. Fostering cooperation and compassion instead of opposition is a great gift to give our children.

Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves. Doing yoga, children exercise, play, connect more deeply with the inner self, and develop an intimate relationship with the natural world that surrounds them. Yoga brings that marvelous inner light that all children have to the surface.

Meditation for kidsBY JULIE PAPPAS

There is a common misconception that because a child’s life is without much of this responsibility this means that they have a carefree life and should display their behaviours accordingly.

As a mother and primary school teacher i see age and gender no barrier to emotional stress, anxiety, worry, low self esteem, anger and sleeplessness. Children do live in an adult world and absorb much of the energy around them. Even children from the most loving and positive parents will have to cope with negativity in their lives through relationships in their extended family, school, and community. On a global level they are also exposed to violence and aggression in many forms of media, from news, television, internet and computer games.

This constant emersion in external stimuli teaches children everything that they are not, and nothing of who they really are. Detaching from outside negativity and external stimuli by going within is a vital part of getting to know them. Meditation visualisations can give the experience they need to help them rediscover their true nature. Inside every child no matter what their behaviour, is a soul that is searching to experience itself as an unconditional love, peace and happiness. As adults in a child’s life we cannot change a child’s behaviours, only they can.

But we can teach them by modelling peace ourselves in our interactions with them and also teach them to take some time out. Tuning into the peace within the soul on a regular basis can help children have the awareness to identify feelings that are either negative and then make good choices. As adults in a child’s world i feel we have a moral and spiritual opportunity to guide children to liberate themselves from all that they are not in respect to inappropriate feelings and behaviours and rediscover all that they really are – peaceful souls

feng shuiforthesoulThis enlightening book goes much deeper than other books on feng shui. It’d a comprehensive look at both centuries–old techniques and the latest research so you can create an environment where your soul is nurtured so you can be at home wherever – you are.

This book has three parts:

Part One explains how to understand the deeper meanings and secret messages in your home, and also how clearing your clutter is like modern day alchemy... it can transform your life.

Part Two presents little-known information about how to activate mystic forces of nature into your home to revitalize your physical and spiritual health.

Part Three gives you an understanding of the Native American Medicine Wheel and shows you how to harness the energy from four cardinal directions

yoursacred spaceWhere is your soul at home?BY DENISE LINN

Live more fully and peacefully.

I believe that there are four things that the soul requires in a home: First, it needs a sense of belonging, to feel connected to the land or a place; second, it needs a place to feel safe, so you can be yourself without fear or hesitation; third, it yearns for harmony with the greater cycles of nature; and finally, your soul needs sacred space. When your home has these things, your life will be filled with inner peace.

The survival of the earliest humans depended on their ability to live in balance with the natural world, and their homes reflected an awareness of this fact. Unfortunately, modern homes are often separated from nature, and the soul has suffered as a result.

Today, bring nature into your environment so that the “beauty in your home leads the heart to the holy mountain.” Find a way to implement the feeling of nature by bringing it into your home. Here are some ideas:

• Put up a photo of nature.

• Create an arrangement of leaves, moss, pinecones, and stones on a table.

• Tie feathers on strings and let them dangle where a breeze can softly move them.

• Put a big plant by the front door.

• Take a walk, find some items from nature, and arrange them into a mandala on a coffee table.

• Play CDs of nature sounds, such as a waterfall, raindrops, the ocean surf, wind, crickets, birds, and so on.

Imagine that you are hand in hand with your soul, walking through your home. What places nourish and comfort your soul? What places do not? Go through each room and ask your soul if there is a way that the space could be even more conducive to its well-being.

When you complete this exercise, begin to take action. For example, if your soul says, “This room feels great, but it would be nice to have some fresh flowers,” bring home a pretty bouquet to enhance the energy of that room.

Page 36: purple orange

www.orangesandlemonsboiutique.com.au36

Locate one place in your home that will be your power spot, and make sure that it is clear and clean. In that space, put objects that inspire you and are beautiful or meaningful, such as favorite photos, crystals, flowers, candles, or special stones. This place does not have to be large, but it should be big enough for you to use for meditation or relaxation, or where you can simply sit and rejuvenate your spirit. For example, it could be a comfortable chair by a sunny window where you sit to replenish your energy.

Creating Sacred SpaceIt is valuable to have at least one place in the home that honors the sacred aspects of life—an altar is one way of accomplishing this. A home altar is like a small temple in your house, which can assist you on your journey toward healing and integration and can serve as a reminder of the sacred aspects of life.

Many people today think that altars are religious and only of significance inside a church; however, for thousands of years, people created altars in their dwellings. These sanctified areas were spiritual and provided a sacred

space, a visible symbol of the connection between heaven and earth. Altars were a reminder of the mysteries of the universe and served as a focal point for communing with spiritual realms.

Create an altar today dedicated to your soul and the souls of those who share your space. On it put reminders of what feeds your soul. For example, you might place seashells there that you found at the beach during your vacation because they remind you of those joyous moments by the sea. You might also include a feather as a reminder to take life lightly. Another idea is to place photos of family members and loved ones on your altar.

After gathering the objects, place each object on your altar with a sense of grace. Speak aloud from your heart about the deeper, underlying meaning of each object.

Complete your altar with a blessing for your home.

Relax & BreathBY LOUISE L. HAY.

The door to your heart and to your dreams opens inward. This means that you must learn to relax before you can solve your problems. You may feel that if only you could solve your problems, you could relax. But it doesn’t work that way. In order to take the pressure off, you need to make space in your heart for other possibilities to happen.

Learn to replace your old, restricting thoughts with thoughts of joy, peace and harmony. Here is an exercise to help you let go of your stress.

For the next week, I want you to carry a timer with you. Set it for every half hour. When it rings, take three very deep, slow breaths, and silently say to yourself:

All is well. All is well. All is well.

Begin to bless your health with love. Life has given you enough breath to last as long as you shall live. As you slow down, you will begin to trust life.

Please know that my love and support are with you as you move along your pathway of a healthy and joyous life.

Let’s affirm:Lifebringsoutthebestinmetoday

“Beautifully handcrafted designs for your home and children.”Hello there! We are Alimrose Designs, creators of gorgeous things for your lovely little ones and your home. Our motto is to ‘give, inspire, play’. Spoil yourself, your child, your friends and your home with something from the Alimrose Designs nursery or home wares range.

How it all started..Alimrose Designs (formerly Native Bush Babies) began in 1980’s when two mothers were tired of not being able to access Australian designed dolls and products for their children. This inspired them to begin their own company. The company originally made Australian themed dolls and figurines based around the characters from the stories of May Gibbs.

Over the years the range grew and eventually included a large range of bibs, soft toys, and quilts and cushions & home wares.

In 1997 the company changed its trading name from Native Bush Babies to Alimrose Designs & at the same time took a change of direction with the designs and style of their baby accessories. Now Alimrose Designs is one the most sought after Australian brands in the Australian market place as well as Europe and the USA.

The things kids say...What better than to look at the world through the eyes of our children!

This beautiful collection contains thoughts and quotations by children. Most importantly there is room for you to personalise this book by recording your own child’s thoughts and sayings, as well as their photographs.

This book will be a lasting record of the time when children, including yours, had a very simple explanation of life and described it truly - out of the mouths of babes!

what is starlight day?

Starlight Day, running throughout the month of May is the largest national fundraising event of the year, with the major activities occurring on May 4th. This year we hope to raise $2 million to help transform the hospital experience for seriously ill children from pain, fear and boredom to fun, joy and laughter.

Starlight needs 5,000 volunteers nationally if we are to reach the $2 million we so urgently need. This Starlight Day, help make a very real difference to kids doing it tough by volunteering to join the Starlight army at one of the hundreds of locations across Australia between the 3rd and 6th May to help sell merchandise.

You can make a difference to sick kids this Starlight Day!

We are very proud to be apart of such a special cause. On the 4th May, we will be participating in startlight day by donating 10% of sales sold on that day.

two decades of children’s laughter

Since being formed as an Australian children’s charity in 1988, the Starlight Children’s Foundation has brightened the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children, and their

families, throughout Australia.

about starlight

Living with illness or injury can cause enormous strain in the lives of children and their families. The pain, loneliness and isolation that sick children feel dominates their lives, and they often miss out on normal experiences that healthy children take for granted.

Starlight provides programs integral to the total care of seriously ill children – while health professionals focus on treating the illness, Starlight is there to lift the spirits of the child, giving them the opportunity to laugh, play and be a child again.

“You hear laughter walking down the corridor before you see the kids.”

What to Expect BY HEIDI MURKOFF

Australia’s pregnancy bible What To Expect When You’re Expecting - now fully revised - is the iconic, must-have book for parents-to-be.

This new-look fourth edition is the book for a new generation of expectant parents. Its up-to-date information reflects what’s new in pregnancy and what’s relevant to today’s pregnant women. Heidi Murkoff has rewritten every section, answering dozens of new questions and including new by-demand material, such as detailed week-by-week fetal development guides in each of the monthly chapters, more on pre-conception, and a section on carrying multiples.

More comprehensive and reassuring than ever, the fourth edition incorporates the most recent developments in obstetrics and addresses current lifestyle trends: from tattooing and belly piercing to Botox and aromatherapy.

There’s more than ever on practical matters: an expanded section on workplace concerns; physical - with more symptoms and more solutions; emotional - more advice on riding the mood rollercoaster; nutritional - from low-carb to vegan, from junk food-dependent to caffeine-addicted; and sexual - what’s hot and what’s not in pregnant lovemaking; as well as much more support for the expectant dad.

Overflowing with tips, helpful hints, and humour - a pregnant woman’s best friend, this new edition is easier to use than ever before.

How do I settle my baby to sleep while he’s still awake?BY JILL IRVING

You can help your baby to settle by creating an environment that makes falling asleep come naturally to him. At some time between the ages of three months and six months, this should happen by itself.

It’s like learning to crawl. If you always carry your baby, he won’t get the chance to discover crawling, as he’ll never be on the floor long enough to work it out. If you make a habit of feeding or rocking your baby to sleep, he won’t have the opportunity to learn how to soothe himself to sleep.

You need to set the stage. A regular bedtime will set your baby’s internal clock so he’s naturally sleepy at a predictable time. Create a consistent bedtime routine which lets him know it’s time for sleep. Make soothing activities, such as a warm bath and massage part of the routine. Where he sleeps, read him a story or sing a song. And don’t forget a cuddle and a kiss.

Once the routine is finished, put your baby down in his cot while he is drowsy but still awake. He’ll probably then drift off to sleep without much protest. If he is an older baby and depends on being fed or rocked to sleep, he’ll need to practise.

To teach your baby to self-soothe, leave the room after you’ve said goodnight and wait outside, checking on him at intervals. Or make it more gradual by sitting next to your baby’s cot or bed and easing yourself further away over successive nights. While you are in the room make minimal eye contact and don’t chat or say more than simple requests such as “lie down”.

rockabybaby

If your baby is used to breastfeeding or bottle-feeding to sleep in your arms, gently wake him before laying him down in his cot. Or when you see your baby starting to drift off during a feed, end his meal and finish the rest of the bedtime routine before laying him down to sleep. Or you could simply make your baby’s last feed the start of his bedtime routine.

Though your instinct may not be to wake a sleeping baby, keep the bigger picture in mind. You’re working towards the important long-term goal of helping your baby to develop the ability to soothe himself to sleep. Your baby will rest for longer periods because he can put himself back to sleep when he wakes during the night. He’ll then be able to get the rest he needs to grow and thrive.

If your baby just can’t get the hang of knowing when it’s bedtime, he may just be too young to be able to self-soothe. If this is the case, wait a few days, weeks, or even months before trying again.

Or maybe your baby is too tired, and too overwrought, to settle down by himself. Making his bedtime earlier should help to avoid this. Consider if you really are giving your baby the chance to settle himself to sleep, or are rushing in to comfort him at his first peep.

Self-soothing is an important life skill. He’ll learn to feel calm in other situations too, such as when you are at work, or walk out of the room, or when he’s just feeling out of sorts.

One day, Gillian Simon and Matt Vogel found themselves in a New York City store, disgusted. All they wanted was a simple greeting card that would transcend the holidays and inspire their friends. Instead, they were facing a myriad of “cheesy and sappy” cards that just wouldn’t do.

So they went home, made 12 cards to their own liking and traipsed across New York City hoping that independent bookstores and other vendors would sell their decidedly urban yet spartan cards.

Ten years later, Simon and Vogel’s internationally recognised company, Quotable, scored the #203 spot in the 2003 Inc. 500, Inc. magazine;s annual ranking of the fastest-growing private enterprises in the country.

“We weren’t going for it, but we got it.” Vogel said.

Quotable is perhaps best known for their cards, yet the company’s product line has expanded during the company’s first decade to include journals, notepads, mugs, magnets, and photo albums.

The card line, however, is how Simon and Vogel got their start. Each square, black-and-white card features a quotation or proverb written in a distinctive style and script.

Green CredentialsLe Toy Van use responsibly sourced materials to create their toys including rubber wood from replanted forests. Every care is taken to ensure an ethical process, from the sourcing of materials to the conditions of the workforce.

SafetyLe Toy Van painted wooden toys are fully safety tested for ages 36 months and up by accredited safety testing organizations around the world. In Europe, Le Toy Van toys adhere to the stringent EN71 guidelines and are regularly tested to adhere to the EC declaration of conformity.

Passage taken from http://www.letoyvan.com/

Le Toy Van was set up in 1995 with an intention to produce a range of high quality painted wooden toys, initially for the UK market, but later distributed all around the world.

Early designs included a castle, a doll’s house and a farm; these ranges have continued to prosper to the present day. Positive reception by retailers and the buying public alike led to the forming of a limited company and the expansion of the product range to include the huge selection of painted wooden toys that Le Toy Van produces today.

Le Toy Van are now one of the premier painted wooden toy producers in the world and are year on year continuing to grow, diversify and innovate in the field of painted wooden toys.
