The Mango Fly

Mango flies, or myiatic flies, are also known as the Putzi Fly or Tumbu Fly. They are a member of the blowfly family (Cordylobia Anthropophaga); the flies in this family are often metallic in appearance and between 10 to 12 mm in length.Dogs & rodents are the usual hosts but humans often become accidental hosts.

At first the 'bite' looks like a normal mosquito or flea bite. It then slowly develops over the next 2 – 3 days in what will become a small (2 – 3mm), very

itchy, and sore, infected boil-like spot. In the middle there is always a 'hole' through which the maggot breathes. In the capsule of the maggot there is clear fluid that often oozes out. After 2 days there is a very definite and visible subcutaneous black spot in the middle, which looks like a sunken blackhead.

Mango flies are attracted to shady soil that has been contaminated by urine or faeces. Dogs are often infected in their paws and tummies (areas in direct contact with the contaminated soil).Eggs hatch after 1 – 3 days and once in contact with skin take as little as 25 seconds to burrow in. This is a painful event and anti-inflammatories are definitely in order. In some instances these animals need to be anaesthetised to remove the larvae.

With climate change leading to warmer, more tropical conditions, cases of mango flies have been reported all over South Africa.

won the 20km Mountain Bike event on Saturday, 9 September 2017 and placed 3rd in the 110km road event in the junior category on Sunday, 10 September 2017.

The proceeds of the race are in aid of learners with cerebral palsy, and learners with physical disabilities, at Frances Vorwerg School.

THE CAUSE: FRANCES VORWERG SCHOOLFrances Vorwerg School is a special needs school situated in Johannesburg South. The school caters for learners with physical and learning disabilities, from largely underprivileged socio-economic backgrounds.

A dog displaying signs of heat stroke will be panting rapidly and may show signs of weakness. Remove the animal from the source of heat and cool it off immediately by applying cool water to the body. Even if the animal appears to be recovering, a veterinarian can make sure that the animal isn't dehydrated or doesn't have any other complications.
