Purification or preparative chromatography is defined as the separation and collection of

the components of a mixture for further use. The automated collection of such components

is usually performed by a fraction collector located in the flow path after the outlet of the

chromatographic instrument’s detector.

Waters® Fraction Collector III is a compact, flexible, and easy-to-use instrument designed

for use in both small- and large-scale work environments that can be easily integrated with

many Waters purification system configurations. Compatible detectors include UV, PDA,

ELS, or any detector that delivers an analog signal to the collector. The Fraction Collector III

can now be controlled by Empower™ 3 Software, the market-leading chromatography data

management platform.

Empower-based Purification System with the 2707 Autosampler, the 2535 Quaternary Gradient Module, and the 2489 UV/Visible Detector.

Integrated control panels offer consistent instrument control interfaces to view data by year, month, and day.

Collection override functionality is easily accessed from the main screen.

Multiple system configurations are available, such as racks, plates, vials, and bottles.

Integrated control

Control of the Fraction Collector III is accessible through a new instrument control software interface that integrates seamlessly with

Empower Software control components. The interface enables the user to configure collection vessels and program collection routines.

Real-time feedback from the Fraction Collector III indicates the state of the collection process and the location of the collected fractions.

Multiple collector rack configurations, including custom configurations, accommodate a variety of collection vessels. In the event that the

user needs to override collection control, the interface enables software-assisted manual collection through its Override Function, directly

from the instrument control panel.

Collection control The collection control interface allows the operator to perform

different collection techniques, such as:

■ Collection of all fractions with time slicing

■ Time-based collection of specific segments of the run

■ Collection of eluent between triggered fractions

■ Detector triggered collection based on threshold, slope,

or slope and threshold

When large-volume samples require repetitive injections to be

made with fractions collected repeatedly into the same container,

simply check a single box in the software.

For low flow applications, the operator can choose not to open and

close the diverter valve between consecutive fractions, to avoid

the risk of diverting valuable segments of sample to waste.

Fraction collection information is embedded with the Empower

dataset and available in its comprehensive report. This information

now includes fraction shading and the tube location on the

chromatogram. The report can be viewed in an electronic format,

and saved to the database.
