A delicious adventure, born from a touch of folly The story begins in 1998 with a family of French origin who fell under the spell of Indonesia. Their encounter with Indra, a 24-year-old Balinese man in a losmen in Lombok, would be decisive for the project. Travellers and creative people at heart, the couple founded a little charming hotel where family and friends gathered, and which became a new common family goal. A family dream, long before being a business. The father took on board the overall design, the budgetary aspects and the technical coordination, while the mother undertook the overall and interior decoration, the touches of comfort and the harmony of the whole project. As for the children, they designed the website, researched for new ideas and dedicated themselves to discovering new recreational and outdoor activities, while the stepdaughters were involved in communication and advertising. Indra was in charge of recruiting staff and creating enthusiasm amongst the villagers so that they would feel part of the entire project.

A unique location on Cape Medewi The eldest of the children recalls: "From the famous temple of Rambut Siwi, together with Indra, I had spotted the only secluded headland on the western coast; a complete virgin cape, lined with immense beaches". To reach it, he devised a 500-metre long track into the jungle, with a bridge spanning the river. The purchase of additional land was an opportunity to establish good relations with the neighbours who were delighted to soon have the use of the road as well. In this area only recently opened up to tourism, the authorities also favourably welcomed the project. From being a negotiator, Indra became a builder by overseeing the stages of construction of the project which was designed in Europe: building a retaining wall on the beach, the road and the bridge. Then the hotel itself, which is a successful blend of Western and Balinese culture: the grand lobby, the 9 double cottages, the panoramic restaurant, the pool and the spa.

Fragrances, scents and colors If the hotels the family visited were the main sources of inspiration, the garden is the masterpiece of Budha, who planted as many species as possible. “My family belongs to the ksatriya caste, descendants of artists. This has given us a taste for the spectacular and for beauty. For special events, I also keep an eye on floral design, even if it is now Anom who has taken the helm.” Puri Dajuma was able to open in 2002, with 28 employees. For Indra, this was a dream come true, a fantastic but also a prophetic dream.

For him, the balance between man, nature and the gods, the "Tri Hita Karana" is the essence of the spirit of Puri Dajuma: "It refers to the connection between humans and nature ("pelemahan"), the connect ion between humans themselves ("pawongan"), and the connection between humans and the gods ("parhyangan"). These three connections must be in balance. If we protect nature, nature will protect us. This is why we plant trees, why we use local produce in the kitchen and compost in the garden. We encourage the people of the village to collect their waste. If we help the people around us, they will help us. This is why we recruit neighbours from Pekutatan..."

Alit became manager by coming up through all the ranks. He attaches great importance to the quality of human relations at work: "We don't want people working like machines. We want them to learn. Unlike other hotels, we don't forbid them from talking to the guests. We allow the staff to temporarily rotate jobs. I still get to play the role of guide. This refreshes my mind and soul."

A human adventure Today 43 employees work at Puri Dajuma, almost all from the village of Pekutatan, and nearly sixty in the high s e a s o n . W h i l s t r e t a i n i n g t h e i r extraordinary capacity to warmly welcome guests, they are also trained in all the disciplines of hospitality and catering. A happy, motivated, devoted and responsible team, totally involved and committed to the advancement and progress of Dajuma. Simply browse through the many testimonies spontaneously written in Dajuma or on the web to gauge the team's role in the overall satisfaction of the guests: "the best holiday of my life..." often comes back in the comments. It is true that in the newly formed family, the traditional management rules on the island have been significantly softened, with equally distributed tasks and tips and a comprehensive social plan. Puri Dajuma, Bali, is the perfect example of an economic and social family business which benefits a whole village. A harmonious marriage between Balinese and French culture, in which it is impossible to say who is being We s t e r n i z e d a n d w h o i s b e i n g Easternized. Here, these two cultures often mix and merge during special events, in temples, during ceremonies of offerings, or even through the many shared invitations. Like at the beginning for example, when Dajuma offered to dig a well in the village.  

Influence

Puri Dajuma very quickly expanded beyond the perimeter of the village. Guests are invited to feasts, accompanied to the markets, to local places of interest and often to villagers’ homes. The fishermen around the hotel take guest on their prahus, prompting Dajuma to expand its activities to the pleasures of the sea. These same fishermen sell their fish and seafood to the hotel, as local producers do with poultry, fruit and vegetables. Puri Dajuma cooperates with the local authorities. The hotel regularly welcomes students, actors, dancers and musicians to perform as they please in the space made available to them between land and sea. Puri Dajuma welcomes and discovers talented artists of traditional culture. From of this crossover of relationships and customs is born a common spirit of shared protection of the environment: waste collection and protection of water, wildlife, flora, the sea and tradition. An ecological project, Puri Dajuma is imperceptibly building its spiritual dimension.

Religion and spirituality In Bali, the gods are found and worshipped everywhere. In Dajuma, they took up home in temples and in places of worship that have been opened there. This place has a special power related to "taksu", a strong cosmic energy that has the power to heal the body and mind, either directly or indirectly. Here is Indra, dressed in the white costume of a priest, officiating over the special events in Dajuma or in the evening during the magical and exceptional sunsets, in his own special way. In addition to its surroundings of beauty and harmony, Puri Dajuma exudes such a soothing atmosphere that, during their stay, guests often say they sense a kind of reconciliation with their being.. One cannot dream of a more romantic setting to experience the most special events.

10 years, a world prize In November 2002, the Governor of Bali officially opened Puri Dajuma. The hotel has been extended over the years with 3 new buildings: •  One at the highest point of the property provides an even

better view of Cape Medewi. It includes 2 luxurious suites upstairs, above which is the Baruna Hall, very popular for yoga;

•  A second Shinta restaurant, a circular construction above the spa, offers a lounge atmosphere and very popular teppanyaki grills;

•  And due west, on a balcony on the shore, the brand new "Pondok Segara" villa, finely crafted in wood and stone, includes 2 bedrooms connected by a living room looking out onto the ocean.

Puri Dajuma enters its second decade by winning the award given by travellers themselves through the hotel rating website "Trip Advisor: best hotel in Asia in the “all inclusive” category. 10 years: a new online video plus a blog on the website www.dajuma.com and a big party bringing together hosts, friends and local partners. Everyone feels involved in this success. Puri Dajuma: object and subject of a multifaceted achievement: a family, human and spiritual project.
