• According to Catholic doctrine, some souls are not sufficiently free from the temporal effects of sin and its consequences to enter the state of heaven immediately, nor are they so sinful as to be destined for hell either.

• Such souls, ultimately destined to be united with God in heaven, must first endure purgatory— a state of purification. In purgatory, souls "achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

• Temporal punishment and eternal punishment are incurred by mortal sin, but eternal punishment is remitted by the sacrament of reconciliation (known also as the sacrament of penance or confession).

• The remaining temporal punishment may be remitted by sufferings in this life, indulgences, or time after death in Purgatory.

Annihilation Some Christians think that if you die without turning to Christ you are simply destroyed. You pass into oblivion either at death or Judgment Day.They think this is more loving than being sent to Hell.

If God is loving then, why would he want someone to suffer forever?

If God has all power then surely this means he made some people knowing they would spend eternity in Hell.

consequences of sin by the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Page 27: Purgatory

Jesus Saves

Jesus died for our sins Jesus came to take our sins away

Jesus showed us the way to escape sin

Jesus died to rescue us from

sinJesus paid the

Page 28: Purgatory

Salvation – what are the issues?

Who is saved?• Everyone (universalism)? If so, what about

murderers, etc.?• Only those who trust Jesus? If so, what

about young children, people from other religions, people who have never heard of Jesus?

• Those who do good works? If so, how many good works do they need to do?

Different views on relative importance of faith, works, sacraments
