PrepositionsWords that show the relationship of one thing to another. They are always attached to either a noun or a pronoun and often tell the reader where one thing is compared to another, or the position that it is in, e.g. The keys are on the hook / Alisa goes to choir after dinner.

ArticlesA word that comes before a noun. There are two types of articles:• Definitearticles–thereisonlyoneofthese:“the”.• Indefinitearticles–therearetwoofthese:“a”or“an”.Theword“a”isused beforeconsonantsandtheword“an”isusedbeforevowelsounds.

Apostrophes for contractionWhen an apostrophe is used to show a contraction, it shows where one or more letters have been left out. The apostrophe goes where the letter or letters would be. In this way, twowordsarejoinedtogetherinashorterformcalleda“contraction”, e.g. do not becomes don’t.
