    PUNT PROTECTION AND PROCEDURE

We will use SPLIT and TIGHT alignments, plus use zone and man- -rotection principles to execute our punt protection this season. Our punt protection philosophy will be to kick the ball behind or to the man-rotection side, away from the zone protection. The call will be made based on

the alignment of the punt return personnel. .

We will always split both ends ('Flyers'') - unless TIGHT PUNT is called.

The Fullback will call out the side we will be kicking behind or i t will becommunicated to you on the sideline before you take the field.

Our Wings will begin the identification process. They will point and yell outthe number of their landmark or reference.

The Tackles will be the next to identify.

    The Guards will follow.

The Fullback will identify his landmark on the man side last.- I

Zone side people will also point and yell out to identify their referencepoints for blocking responsibilities. They will be responsible for blocking morethan one man.

The Center will snap a perfect snap every time, and SAG - staying in themiddle to solidify protection in the middle of our formation.

With these techniques we will be able to form a cup protection for thepunter while utilizing our Flyers as the quick coverage people.

    PUNT GAME RULES

    1. A player entering the game wearing an illegal number for the position he takesmust report to the referee.

    2. During a punt, only the end man can leave before the ball is punted.

    3. A blocked punt, behind the L.O.S., can be advanced by either team.

    4. A partially blocked punt that travels beyond the L.O.S. is treated like any otherpunt. Cover it.

    5. A fair catch fumbled is a free ball. The only valid fair catch signal is one armextended above the head and waved back and forth. Failure to "wave" the armdeprives the receiver of fair catch protection. With a fair catch signal, the Returnergives up gJ! chances of returning the ball - even if it hits the ground and rolls.

    6. If the receiver signals for a fair catch and he muffs the ball and it bounces off hisbody into the air, covers may not interfere with the receiver or his path to the ball -until the ball touches the ground.

    7. Ifthe receiver does not signal for a fair catch and he muffs the ball and it bouncesoff his body into the air, coverers may collision the receiver and interrupt his abilityto recover the ball. It is a live ball as soon as he touches it, and it becomes freefor us to go after if loose or to strip it if he has it tucked away.

    8. To "down" a punt the kicking team must stay with the ball until the whistle is blown.Always pick up the ball and hand it to an official.

~ h e ncovering a punt on the final play of the half or game: If the receiving teamdoes not field the ball, surround the ball - but do not touch it to "down" it. This is afoul that entitles the offense to one more play from scrimmage.

1O.ln order to down a ball around the goal line, the player must not let any part of hisbody touch the goal line or go into the end zone. When touching the ball down, ifyou go into the end zone you can come back out and establish position on the fieldand down the ball.

    11. Players covering a punt cannot interfere with the free movement o f a receiver in

his effort to catch any punt. Find the ball, as you release from L.O.S. See if thekick is short. Do not overrun it.

    12. Punts can be run out of the end zone. We must cover all kicks until the whistle isblown. But if a ball lands in the end zone - it is a DEAD BALL, automatically

. ::::::> O n c e our cover man has been blocked out of bounds, he may return to the field of,i play and become the second man to touch the ball - whether after one of his

teammates has touched it first or after an opponent has touched it. (This is achange from previous year!)

    BASIC ALIGNMENT

The placement of personnel is based on your abilities for the responsibilities of the

position on this team, not on the position played offensively or defensively.

Example: A linebacker may be the fullback.

    CENTER

    GUARDS

    TACKLES

    WINGS

    FLYERS (WIDE)

    FLYERS (TIGHT)

Comfortable stance - good base, flat back. Not too much weightforward - balanced.

Your width needs to be a width of a shoe from the Center. Your

depth needs to be: align the toesof

your inside foot with thenear heel of the Center. Your feet should be in a slight outsidefoot stagger. Be in a two-point stance; hands on knees, head up,weight mentally on the outside foot - to initiate the "SAG".

Your base width needs to be one foot from the Guard. Yourdepth needs to be: align the toes of your inside foot with theUp Foot of the Guard. Your feet should be in a slight outsidefoot stagger. Be in a two-point stance; hands on knees, headup, weight mentally on the outside foot - to initiate the "SAG".

I f wearing an ineligible number - report to the referee. Youneed to line up one (1) foot outside the tackle and tw o (2) feetdeeper. Your feet should be in a slight outside foot stagger.Be square to the L.O.s., in a two-point stance; hands on knees, head up, weight equally distributed to assure quick movement.

Align outside the numbers (bottom edge). This alignment willvary slightly based on kick direction and ball location. I f thereare two (2) to bracket us, back of f the L.O.s. slightly. I f thereis one (1) to hold us up, work from the L.O.s.

Your width needs to be three (3) feet from the Tackle. Yourdepth needs to be: align the toes of your inside foot withthe Up Foot of the Tackle. Your feet should be in a slightoutside foot stagger. Be in a two-pOint stance; hands onknees, head up, weight equally distributed to assure quickmovement. .

    FULLBACK

    PUNTER

I f wearing an ineligible number - report to the referee. You needto line up directly behind the right Guard (for a right-footedkicker), heels at 6 yards from the ball. Be square to the L.O.S.,hands on knees - communicate your calls to ignite the punt teamto react, to identify their reference points. When their reactionsare complete, call "Ready - Set".

Align with your back foot 15 yards from the ball, in a balancedstance, with your hands open and your kicking leg splittingthe seam of the Center's pants. .

    PUNT COVERAGE

    1. Protect first - - cover second.

Anticipate your release from the L.O.S. on the thud of the ball.Do not get held up thereafter.

    2. Sprint downfield - "Spread the Net" - for the first 15 yards. Be prepared mentally tosprint at least 40 yards each time - PRIDE - ATTITUDE - EFFORT!

    3. Locate the ball in flight (take a peek)

    a. Avoid over-running a short kick.b. Avoid interfering with a receiver'S right to catch the ball.c. Avoid the deception of a fake fair catch signal.

    4. The CENTER and the FB are the apex references. Everyone else spread theircoverage lanes from them.

_ _ f "RED" is called, the FB will be covering to the RIGHT and the CENTER tothe LEFT of the Returner, as they are attacking him.

_ _ f "BLUE" is called, the FB will be covering to the LEFT and the CENTER tothe RIGHT of the Returner, as they are attacking him.

_ _ The Guards are yards from th e FB or Center.

_ _ The Tackles are yards from the Guards._ _ The Flyers are spotting the kick - aiming point is the jugular vein of theReturner on your respective side. If you cannot time-up the hit with the catch, break down and position yourself to make the play.

_ _ The Wings will fan out and be yards from the Tackles. You are theCONTAIN men.

    5. When the ball is kicked right, the center will sprint down the right hash for 15 yards -to help everyone else adjust to their lanes. After 15 yards, the center will convergeto the ball. Everyone else will adjust their course while maintaining separation, andsqueeze to the ball keeping it inside and in front - from where you are coming.Never lose leverage!

    6. We never want cover people too close together - side by side or one behind theother.

    SpecTm/-Playbook-StockiPunl Pro & Cov/Punt Coverage

  • 8/6/2019 Punt Team St Louis

    16/20

    7. Flyers - Go straight for the jugular vein on your side of the return man. Take a shotfrom the outside-in and make the tackle. All other coverage men must converge, breakdown, stay square, and keep the ball inside and in front. Be in control to makethe tackle. Never let the ball break outside.

    8. Interior people - get an outside release as often as possible.

If you get on the wrong side of the Center/FB apex, you must adjust yourselfto fill your lane responsibility. WE MUST NOT HAVE A VOID IN LANECOVERAGE RESPONSIBILITY!

    9. First men down must not be blocked and must make the play.

    10. Do not allow a fair catch signal to slow your coverage. Cover full speed and beready for a muffed catch attempt or a fumble. No one can return any ball if there hasbeen a legal fair catch signal given. (The man giving the signal may not block.)

A new rule: A legitimate fair catch signal erases all and any possible returnsby the man signaling the fair catch or any of his teammates, even if the punthits the ground and rolls.

    11. When we are "punting in" and are trying to kill the ball inside the 10 yard line, weshould expect a fair catch signal or he is baiting us away from the true flight of theball.

    a. Know the direction of the kick (take a peek)b. Flyers run past the returner and turn you back to the goal line.

Stand In.Jhe field of play - not on the line. Keep the ball from going into theend zone. Do not get blocked out of bounds . . . restricts you from downingthe ball, first. However, you may now be the second one to down it.

    c. Center and others will find the ball and if the returner is attempting a faircatch, they will breakdown on him and be ready to recover any fumble. Givehim room to field the ball.

    d. A punt that goes into the end zone is no longer a live ball. It is a DEADBALL. (New rule: 2004).

    12. All return men are protected and have free access to catch any ball. It is a penaltyto obstruct their path to the ball regardless of whether or not they have given a fair

catch signal. Be alert for the receiver making a quick adjustment to a falling puntthat he has misjudged. If he hits you - it is a penalty on you.

    13. If no member of the receiving team is in position to field a punt, we are permitted tocatch it in the air ourselves. This can often occur when we are "putting in", and nomember of the receiving team makes an attempt to catch it. The ball will be blowndead as soon as we catch it. Hand it to the official.

    14. When we "down" a punt, "bleed" all the yardage you can from it. Then cover it andhold it until the official blows it dead. Hand the ball to the official. Do not just touch i tand walk away.

    15. Cover the kick with the intent to force and recover a fumble! Gang Tackle! Be

physical and always alert for a ball on the ground. Strip the ball from the returner!Tackle with intention of forcing a fumble.

    16. As you cover the punt and are closing in to the ball, do not over-run the ball. Alwaysapproach by keeping inside and in front - move laterally as the ball carrier moveslaterally - coverage and tackle as he challenged up field. Never let the ball getoutside of you.

Punt coverage is a TEAM effort. It takes eleven men to do the job.

    17. The Punter is the safety to the returner. Move on down the field after your punt. Be

in a linebacker postion to make the tackle if the Returner breaks free.

Interior people do not be downfield before the kick is executed>- Spread the net - from the FB/Center - out>- Stay in your lanes for the first 15 yards. Avoid blockers, stay separated and

squeeze to the ball after.>- The secret to good coverage is desire. The secret to good tackling is staying
