Ward-wiseassessment:Punecityhas14administrativewards–Aundh,Kothrud,GholeRoad,Warje-KarveNagar, Dhole Patil, Hadapsar, Nagar Road, Sangamwadi, Bhavani Peth, Kasba-Vishrambag,SahakarNagar,TilakRoad,Bibvewadi,DhanakawadiAundh:Mula River flows along its northern perimeter. Although the ward has few flood-prone areas, certain pockets south of the river, Ramwadi Nala, and the low-lyingareas around Pashan Lake have been known to be vulnerable to flooding duringheavyrains.Kothrud:Theward has nomajorwater channels. The little risk of flooding is due to urbanfloodingoflow-lyingareas.GholeRoad:The ward has theMutha River on its South-eastern border andMula river on itsNorth-easternborder,asthetworiversconfluenceontheeasternedgeoftheward.The riskofmajor flooding is relatively low,andonlycertainareason thenorthernbank of the Mutha River and the western bank of the Mula River are likely toexperiencesomeflooding.Warje–KarveNagar:TheMuthaRiverflowsalongthesouthandsoutheasternboundaryoftheward.Fewlow-lyingareasandslumpocketsonthenorthernbankoftheriverexperiencesomefloodingduringheavyrains.Theoverallriskfactorforthewardisverylow.DholePatilRoad:MulaandMutharivers(aftertheirconfluence)flowalongthenorthernedgeoftheward. The risk factor for the ward is low. Considerable flooding is, however,expectedinsomeoftheslumareasintheward.Hadapsar:While, traditionally the risk, from floods in theward, has been low, the BhairobaNala(canal)andWadkiNala,whichtraversethroughtheward,havelost22.73and16.56 per cent of their streams in the recent past. The continuing anduncheckedconstruction boom in these areas has thus made this are suspectible to urbanflooding.

NagarRoad:TheMulaandMutha rivers flowalong the southernedgeof theward.Due to thesuddenspurtofconstructionanddevelopment,thegreaterriskisagainfromurbanflooding.Sangamwadi:The two rivers – Mula and Mutha – skirt around the southern and westernboundariesoftheward.TheareaaroundthePatilEstateslumispronetofloodingduringheavyrains.BhavaniPeth:ThewardispartoftheoldcityofPuneandhasahighpopulationdensity.Thereisalsoalargepresenceofslumstructures.Thethreatoffloodingislargelyfromurbanflooding.Kasba–VishramBaah:The threat of floods is lowas anti-flood structures have alreadybeen constructedalong the riverbanks, and theoldoccupantson the riverbankhavealreadybeenrelocated.SahakarNagar:Theriskoffloodsisverylow.TilakRoad:ThreatexistsalongthewaterlineoftheMuthaRiver.Whilethefloodlineisalmost100mtothesouthofthenormalriverchannel,constructionhasbeenmadewithinthefloodline,therebyaccentuatingtheriskoffloodingintheseareas.Bibvewadi&Dhanakawadi:Lowtoverylowrisk.Basin-wiseassessment:Over the last fewyears, the cityhas seenmany flash floods,which townplannersandexpertsblameondisappearanceofnaturalstreamsandwaterbodies.Theysaythatoflate,thecityhasbeenwitnessingfloodsevenduringmediumrains,whichisacauseforalarmasthecitymightgotheChennaiwayduringheavyrainfall.

Geographically,thecityofPuneliesinavalleywithmanysmallandmediumstreamsmeandering down its area to empty at the Mula-Mutha basin. Researchers haveidentifiedsixmajorbasins thatareactive inandaroundthecity–Ramnadi,AmbilOdha,Nandusi,Bhairobanala,Wadkinala(canal)andWagholinala.RamnadiBasinBackin2010,thetinyriverofRamnadiwasinthenewsforthehavocitsflashfloodscreatedintheBaner-Bavdhanarea,leaving11peopledead.Thepublicoutrageinitsaftermathpromptedauthoritiestosaytheywouldrazeillegalencroachmentsaswellas demarcate red and blue flood lines for the river. While majority of theencroachments were pulled down, the demarcation of red and blue flood lines(constructionwithintheselinesisnotallowed)isyettohappen.Incidentsofheavy rains invariably leads to floodingas thewater isneitherable toseepintothegroundnorabletoflowalongthebodyoftheriverAmbilOdhabasinIn June2013, flash floodsnearShindewadionNationalHighway4washedawayawomanandherchild.Theflashfloodsinthisareawerecausedduetotheclosureofthewaterwaysintheupperreachesoftherivulet,AmbilOdha,whichhappenstobeoneof themost important tributariesof theMutha river.With40per centof thefirst-order streams of theAmbilOdha lost forever, the researchers say, danger offlashfloodsinthisarearemainsreal.Wagholi-KharadibasinTheheavyrainswhichlashedthecitytowardstheendof2015inNovembercauseddeep distress for residents of Lohegaon, Dhanori and nearby areas.Waterloggingwas reported from numerous areas, causing severe damage to vehicles andproperty. This area, home to huge construction boom, has also seen some of thelargest loss of water streams. In the Wagholi basin area, 34.78 per cent of thestreamshavevanishedduetounplannedgrowth.Bhairoba Nala and Wadki Nala, which traverse through Hadapsar and itsneighbouring areas, have lost 22.73 and 16.56 per cent of their streams. Withconstructionboomcontinuingunchecked in these areas, locals fear aChennai-likesituationhere.Measures:NDRF,whichhas10battalionslocatedatvariousplacesinIndia,playedakeyroleinallmajordisasterreliefoperations inthecountry,after its formation in2006.EachbattalionoftheNDRFhas18self-containedspecialistsearchandrescueteamsof45personnelincludingengineers,technicians,electricians,dogsquadsandmedicalandparamedicsteam.Thetotalstrengthofeachbattalionis1,149.Onesuchbattalion–5Battalion–cateringtoMaharashtraandGoaregionisstationedatSudumbare,nearTalegaon,inPunedistrict.
