ABOUT THE CITY AND AIRPORT CONNECTIVITY
NAME OF THE AIRPORT (STATE) : PUNE AIRPORT (MAHARASHTRA)
ABOUT THE CITY:
(I) INTRODUCTION: Pune is the 9th most populous city in India and the second largest in the state of Maharashtra after the state capital Mumbai. It is situated 560 metres above sea level on the Deccan plateau, on the right bank of the Mutha River. Pune city is the administrative headquarters of Pune district and was once the centre of power of the Maratha Empire established by Shivaji Maharaj.
(II) ABOUT THE DISTRICT POPULATION, INDUSTRY & TOURISM POTENTIAL: POPULATION In 2011, Pune District had population of 9,429,408.
ECONOMY: Pune is considered the cultural capital of Maharashtra. Since the 1950s and 1960s, Pune has had a
traditional old-economic base. Most of the old industries continue to grow. The city is also known for its manufacturing and automobile industries, as well as for research institutes of information technology (IT), education, management and training, which attracts migrants, students, and professionals from India, South East Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Pune is also one of the fastest growing cities in the Asia-Pacific region. The ‘Mercer 2015 Quality of Living rankings’
evaluated local living conditions in more than 440 cities around the world where Pune ranked at 145, second in India after Hyderabad (138). It also highlights Pune among evolving business
centres and emerging 9 cities around the world with citation "Hosts IT and automotive companies".
At present Pune is bustling with economic activity. Areas around Pune like Baramati, Khed, Mundhwa, Loni, Yerwada, Talegaon, Alandi, Warje, Wadgaon etc are agriculturally active with the first six accounting for a majority of Pune's agricultural produce. Pune has a reasonable population connected to agriculture. Pune's agro activities research and development does take place in places like The Agricultural College at Shivaji Nagar.
INDUSTRY: Turning to the industrial sector the picture is rather enviable. The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has developed two industrial estates in the immediate vicinity of Pune on the lines of the Industrial Parks of United Kingdom. One such area is located at Parvati while the other is at Bhosari, near the already sprawling industrial area of Pimpri, Chinchwad, chakan and Talegaon. A number of large scale industries are also present in and around Pune. Some major companies are Phillips India, Bajaj Auto, Kirloskar Cummins, Kirloskar Filters, Kalyani Sharp, Mahindra And Mahindra, Hindustan Antibiotics, Tata Electric And Locomotive Company, Mercedes Benz India Ltd, Kirloskar Oil Engines, Indian card Clothing, Alfa Laval, SKF Bearings, State Transport Bodybuilding division, Weikfield India, Serum India, Duro Shocks, Kinetic Honda, Bajaj Tempo (Force Motors), Kirloskar Pneumatics etc.
2
TOURISM POTENTIAL:
Pune has grown into a vibrant metro, a hub of education, industry, information technology, entertainment, and so on. But what makes Pune still more significant is that it is a place from where you can plan several exciting trips to hill-stations, forts, and places of pilgrimage, not to forget an adventurous package too. Apart from the many interesting places just beyond the city limits of Pune, such as the Sinhagad Fort or the backwaters of the Khadakvasla Dam, tourists always make it a point to visit the twin hill-stations of Lonavala and Khandala for its bracing weather and the wonderful views you get of the valley and the snaking highway that leads to Mumbai. Lonavla is about 64 kilometers away from Pune and has several ‘points’ that offer breath taking views of nature at her best.
Yet another pair of hill-stations easily accessible from Pune are Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar. Located about 120 kilometers southwest of Pune, Mahabaleshwar is a vast plateau measuring 150 kilometers, bound by valleys on all sides. Kondeshwar Cliff, about 50 kilometers pune near Kamshet, is for the hard core paragliding enthusiasts looking for some challenging flying adventure.
