– Time of intense national pride for Americans after the War of 1812.

• Monroe Doctrine– American threat to use force if European nations try

to colonize within the Western Hemisphere.

• Missouri Compromise– Preserved the balance of slave to free states by

setting the 36°,30’N line.

National Economic Policies• Era of Good Feelings

– Nationalism rises in the U.S. after the War of 1812.

• James Monroe became the 5th president and wanted to united the nation by: – Reestablished the national bank.

Nationalist Diplomacy • Seminole Indians

continued to attack Southerners.– Andrew Jackson

destroyed several Seminole villages and then removed the Spanish governor of Florida from power.

• In 1819, Spain ceded all of Florida to the U.S. in the Adams-Onis Treaty.

The Monroe Doctrine • Declared that Europe

should stay out of the Western Hemisphere.– U.S. would stay out of

European affairs.

• U.S. would use force if necessary to implement this.– Bluff b/c U.S. doesn’t

really have the army needed to do this.

• Missouri wanted to be admitted as a state within the U.S.– Should it be a slave or free state?
