This pump for refineries and the petro-chemical industry is the consistent furtherdevelopment of the proven Klaus Unioncentrifugal pumps with magnet drive andwithoutshaftseal.
TheKlausUnionpumptypeseriesSLMAVPfulfils the high technical and economicdemandsthatrefineriesandthepetrochemi-cal industryimposetodayonpumpswithoutshaftseals.
Fromasafety-engineeringpointofview,theSLM AVP is an enhancement of the pumpswithmechanicalsealformerlyutilised,whicharedescribedintheAPI610standard.
Theconstructiontypewithoutshaftsealbutwithmagnetdriveguaranteesthatthepumpis absolutely leak free, in accordance withthe TA-Luft specification (German TechnicalInstructiononAirQualityControl),andmain-tenance-free in operation, compared to theversionwithmechanicalseal.
TheconstructionseriesSLMAVPcoversthecompleteperformancerangeofsingle-stagecentrifugal pumps. Multistage pumps andpumpsconstructedforhighpressureoperationarealsoavailableasspecialdesigns.

Journal bearings (API-§ 6.10)
Thethrustandradialjournalbearingsareself-lubricatedandinthestandarddesignconsistsofpuresinteredsiliconcarbide(SSiC).Thejournalbearingcomponentsarefixedandsecuredinboththeaxialandradialdirections.Compensation for the different thermalexpansion coefficients of the metallic andceramiccomponents isensuredby thecon-structionaldesign.
Thepressurisedflushflowforlubricationandcoolingofthejournalbearingsistakenfromahighpressurelocationinthehydraulicsys-temandfeddirectlyintothejournalbearings(seeFig.1).
Magnet drive (API-§ 9.1.3/6.1.6)
The magnet drive is configured concentri-cally and transmits torque without slip viathe field of the permanent magnets. Thethermally stable samarium-cobalt material(Sm2Co17) withstands operating tempera-turesofupto400°C.Themagneticmaterialaluminium-nickel-cobalt (AlNiCo) is utilisedforhighertemperaturesofupto450°C.
Asecondpressurisedflushflow is takenoffat a high pressure location in the hydraulicsystemandfedtothemagnetdrive,whereitprovides for the necessary heat dissipation.Thepressurisedflushflowensures that thetemperature rise in the isolation shell areadoesnot lead toevaporationof thepumpedliquid(seeFig.2).

Klaus Union-Standard: Single isolation shell with leakage monitoring and drain at the in-termediate lantern. (API-§ 3.66)
The standard version of the SLM AVP pumpisequippedwithasingle isolationshell.Theintermediate lantern is equipped with alabyrinth system to the atmosphere,a leakage monitoring system and a drainconnection. A pressure gauge or a liquidsensor can be utilised as a leakagemonitor. The labyrinth seal upstream of theanti-friction bearings serves as a throttlingpoint in the event of isolation shell damageleading to product escaping into the inter-mediate lantern. The pressure rise or thepresence of liquid is detected by the moni-toringsystem.ThisdesigncorrespondstothesecondarycontrolsystemdescribedinAPI685(§3.66).
Driveunitwithsecondarycontrolsystem
Optional: Double isolation shell with pressure monitoring. (API-§ 3.64)
In this version, the pressure-containingsecond (outer) isolation shell serves assecondary containment and thus fulfils theAPI definition of the secondary containmentsystemaccordingto§3.64.Theouterisolationshellisarrangedconcen-tricallyaround the inner isolationshell.Thepressureismonitoredinthecavitybetweenthetwocontainmentshellsandisconfiguredwithapressurebelowatmosphereinthestateofthepumpasdelivered. It is thuspossible todetect isolation shell damage from outsideandfrominside.Intheeventofdamagefromoutside, the pressure monitor will indicateatmosphericpressure;whereasintheeventofdamagefrominside,thesystempressurewillbeindicated.
Doubleisolationshellassecondarycontainmentsystem
Outer magnet carrier protection (API-§ 9.1.3.5) and rubring zones (API-§ 9.1.3.3)
To protect the isolation shell, rubring zonesareprovidedonboththeoutermagnetcarrierandtheinnermagnetcarrier.Intheeventofadeflectionofthemagnetrotors,thiseffectivelyavoidscontactoftherotorswiththeisolationshelltoavoiddamagingtheshell.
Themountingzoneintheintermediatelanternensuresthattheoutermagnetcarrierissafelyguided during assembly and disassembly.Thispreventsaccidentaldamagetotheoutermagnet carrier.By virtue of this design, theoutermagnetcarriersheathingrequestedbyAPI685isnotrequired.
